Last Spring, we announced our first ever all-girl board test, and 8 snowboard companies offered us boards for our first ever Fun-O-Meter board test. We took the boards out with groups of girls in Aspen/Snowmass, CO and Hunter, NY to try them out on varied terrain and conditions. What were we looking for? Fun!

Check out our full board test to see which boards sucked, and which women's boards won the Super Fun Seal of Approval!

Night shooting!!

2008.01.30 (Wed)

Yesterday we went night shooting!
The snow covered the mountain again so it will be really nice.
BUT, the temperature was minus 17 degrees in the morning...I don’t want to get frostbite...

For our night shooting, we need to prepare many equipment, such as lights or generators and it takes more time than daytime shooting.

Look at Tadashi’s back pack! He must be able to fly now.
We've finally figured out how to carry all the equipment!

from left, Koni, Anthony, Dice-K
The generator was on Koni’s sled so it looked like a custom-fabricated sled.
Dice-K could launch out into the universe.

After dark, the session began!
The terrain was kind of complicated and difficult for landing, because sometimes they had to jump into the dark.

Despite the complications, the riders kept trying to get great footage until they got it!
That’s heartfilms riders for ya!

We moved to another spot.
Koni shot sprays of powder.

The time we left our house was 2pm and we got home at midnight...time goes by so fast.
It was a long day for sure.

We will go again TODAY too!

2008.01.30 (Wed)

Trouble...

無念。。。

2008.01.30 (Wed)

The second day of night shooting!
It was really cold - same as yesterday...though it made the snow light.

We concentrated on shooting today.
There was a cool location that the riders can jump out between the trees.
Tadashi first, then Koni.

But something happened when Tadashi dropped in for his second try...!
Suddenly, it blacked out! The lights went down and the generator’s engine had stopped.
We had to stop shooting...

We couldn’t figure out what was the problem.
30-40min later we still couldn't start the engine...

Then we gave up shooting...
Too bad...

Although the generator was dead, we had a darkness session at the end!
They only relied on our sled’s head lights.
Koni shot some spray. The snow was a bit deep.

Tadashi also shot some spray, but he hardly could see anything.

The nice snow made Tadashi happy.
Do you see him happy?

We will go for a night shoot again soon!

LINE

2008.02.06 (Wed)

Hello, it’s Keiji.
I went to Pemberton with Fredi (Burton rider), Jeff&Jess (photographers), Anthony(filmer) and Tadashi.

It was a weekend so there were so many people with their sleds including someone with rifles. Were they hunters?

Which line would you like to ride?

In the afternoon, there was no shooting just some riding.
I really had fun keeping up with Tadashi!
Snow was great too. I loved it!

It’s different to see the line at the top or from the bottom. It’s not that easy to ride the line that I marked...

Tadashi can decide his line while he is riding and even though his lines are so sick, he is having fun!
I feel that riding lines are kind of difficult but the same time it’s very interesting.

Fredi and Tadashi
Fredi is a very friendly and nice guy.

We will go on a road trip with these members.
The goal is Revelstoke. It’s snowing there now and it must be nice!

2008.02.08 (Fri)

At Revelstoke

2008.02.08 (Fri)
Hello, it’s Keiji,
After the eight hours of driving we made it to Revelstoke yesterday!

Today we went snowmobiling but unexpectedly the snow on the mountain was so deep...
It was waist-deep snow so when you land the board stops and keeps sinking like a submarine boat and it was really hard to hike-up too.

It was so foggy that we weren’t able to go up, but at the lower side the snow was heavy...
Difficult situations for searching for spots to ride and shoot.

Ummmmmm... but there must be some good spots!!
We'll keep trying tomorrow too!

2008.02.09 (Sat)

ROAD TRIP DAY3

2008.02.09 (Sat)
It’s the weekend. There are many snowmobilers here.
Someone loaded the sleds like this...
I think tomorrow will be more crowded. There were many funky old men.

There were no trucks at today’s spot, no one must have been there for a long time.
The snow was better than yesterday’s spot.

This is a photo of Lake Revelstoke.

The snow get deeper and deeper as we went into the backcountry.
Even turning around was quite a job.
Everyone got stuck.

Tadashi rarely gets stuck but today he was having a hard time.
We dug too much today.
It was like muscle training.

Tadashi and Mikey.

After we got down from the mountain we washed our trucks.
It’s nice to see a clean car!

A huge truck was next to Tadashi’s.
It’s so huge that Tadashi’s truck looked small.

Tomorrow we may go to the same point.
We’ll try something newer than today.

Keiji,

2008.02.10 (Sun)

Heavy Snow!

2008.02.10 (Sun)

There’s some very heavy snow falling in West Canada.
Some highways are closed down due to avalanches, I heard.
Can we get home??

Today we drove and drove and found some good spots and had some good shooting.
We’ll keep doing that tomorrow too!

This is a photo blog of Jeff Curtes, the Burton photographer, “THIS IS MY BED”.
on the blog you can see the photos he took when he was on his shooting trips.
It’s fun to see that kind of photos on his blog.
He has just started it and it’s going to be sick!
You’d better check this out!

Sorry I haven't written much, but I've been too lazy and nothing that interesting has come along...plus, i've forgotten some of the things that have happened *sigh* But let me summarize what I CAN remember...

1) Mom's in Houston with my aunt who gave birth a day ago...Woot, my first female cousin :D

2) RS Related:

Hunter: 40 (or 41...)
Attack: 54 (*sigh* this is gonna take a while)
Herblore: 23 (almost Ranarrs)

Trying to get full addy...
[x]platebody
[x]full helm
[x]plateskirt
[x]kite shield (I'm not sure if I really need it, cuz I use a gmaul...)

Trying to achieve (stats):
[x]60 attack (for dragon daggers and dragon longswords)
[x]25 herblore (for Ranarrs)
[x]49 mage (ruby enchant)
[x]40 range (for full green dhide) (for clue scroll)

3) End of the skip-a-class-each-day schedule...we might be adopting the block schedule soon...(Block scheduling seems like a good idea---always 2 days to do homework... excellente! )

4) I skipped a Student Council meeting on purpose...Normally, this isn't such a big deal, but since I'm a member of the Council's Council...But that's okay (I think), cuz my science test was WAAYYYYY more important than just making posters for Spirit Week (but I wanted to help out anyway...*sigh*)...At least I won't have to take the test on Monday...which would suck for me because my brain doesn't really wake up until monday evening...Plus, I didn't want to miss Bill Nye's Magnetism video...ehehehe...

My Journal: Family gathering
By: Swin

So the whole fam dam got together last night and had a lovely Sunday dinner at my parents house.

We had a wine induced family debate surrounding the use of the word "civilized". My sister Jill and I were telling my dad that we didn't like the word civilized because it inherently implies a hierarchy, with a negative connotation attached to the word un-civilized. Historically, the word un-civilized being attached to hunter gatherer type societies, and civilized attached to white western modes of existence. Anyway, my Dad kept saying it was an intellectual fad, and that associating a negative connotation with the word civilized was in fact completely misconstruing its original meaning (disregarding its well documented historical use). Ultimately it turned into this hours long yelling match with my sister calling my Dad's opinion antiquated. Haha. It was kind of funny, in that I just had a several hour long semantics argument kind of way.

Anyway, that was in fact a pretty boring story in retrospect. High five me.

..a note to everone who takes the time to read this....
we know that the weather this "winter" sucks. it is painfully obvious each time we look out our window towards the hill. we also know that each and every one of you is super bummed about it - from the hardcore season pass holders to the ones who decided that this will be the season that you're finally gonna learn. we honestly, truly, 100% appreciate everyone's love for creek and your entheusiasm for the sport - it's what keeps everyone here stoked to come in everyday, to have awesome events and contests, and to build bigger and better and radicaler (look it up) features for you to jump, shred, jib, bonk, slash, rip, and destroy. all of you are the reason that we exist.
so, please believe us when we say that we are doing everything in our power to open - not just one trail, but the whole mountain. we're not just being sadistic by getting you to buy your passes and creek cards, teasing you with three features, then closing up shop. we're not simply tempting you with all of the pictures of wallrides, boxes, and rails sitting around the shop, then pointing and laughing when you realize that they're no use on dirt. that'd be like poking a stick at a caged spider monkey - not the best idea. the one big requirement of snowboarding and snow skiing is "snow" - both for movement and to hold them thar' boxes and rails in place. and snow doesn't like to stick around (or be created - see the "snowmaking 101" blog) when it's an all-time record of 72 degrees out.
right now, snowmaking weather still looks to be in the forecast, with seasonable cold finally arriving in about 12 days. we WILL be making snow at every opportunity we have, and we WILL be adding features as soon as the snow is down. Until then, remember that we truly appreciate everyone who rides at creek, and we're offering you the chance to stay on the snow, even if it's not here. Your season pass is good for FREE midweek tickets at Stratton and $25 weekend tickets thru Feb 2nd. We even made it so you can get a discounted price at Hunter - $30 with your MC pass. So please take advantage of these offers, and we'll be seeing you here real soon.

After meeting alot of Americans at Uni, I have several misconceptions about Australia that I'd like to clear up:
- No one drinks fosters here
- We don't talk like Steve Erwin aka the Croc Hunter (R.i.p)
- We don't carry knives into the outback desert area (I have an American housemate who actually bought big knives to take on his tour of the outback)
- Canberra is the capital of Australia, not Sydney
- No, I'm not putting another shrimp on the barbie
- The city of Melbourne is pronounced Mel-burn not Mel-bourne

However, the toilet really does flush the other way here.

The Life and Times of Joe: End of the trip
By: Joe

Well I'm back in Canada after 26 days of travelling, 10 flights and many, many kilometers and adventures. What can I say, that was one of the best trips of my life, with lots of fun things done, people met, drinks drunk and more. Starting from Vancouver we flew to San Diego for a quick stopover, then it was a 14 hour flight to Sydney, then over to Melbourne from there. After spending a few days there we grabbed Chewy and headed up on another flight to Brisbane to explore the Gold and Sunshine coasts, Surfers Paradise was fun, as was Noosa Heads. After we got back to Melbourne we spend a few more days relaxing then hopped in Chewys car and drove along the Great Ocean Road and checked out the sothern coastline, it was amazing. The rock formations at the 12 Apostles were rad. Chewy then headed off for Fiji and Nels and I caught another flight, this time to Hobart in Tasmania. We rented a car and drove up the East coast and stayed in a place called Bichno which was quite close to Freycinet Park which had some great hikes. After we got back to Melboune we quickly flew up to Fiji the next day and transferred over to the Outrigger Resort. Pretty fancy I gotta say. After relaxing by the pool and watching the wind (and too much rain for my liking) Ryan (Chewy) and Kristy's wedding was upon us. The sun was out in full force that day and everyone looked great! The cermony was quick and awesome (with the minister in sandals) and then it was party time! I'm pretty sure everyone had a great time. A couple days later we went to Beachcomber island, and it was the very definition of a tropical island, it only took 10 minutes to walk all the way around the island on the beach. The bar had a sand floor and there were tons of activities to do, we went snorkling for too long (resulting in a nice burn on my back) and then we rented kayaks and paddled over to Treasure Island. On our last night in Fiji Nels organized a traditional dinner for us in one of the local villages and we had a great Lovo feast (earth oven) with lots of Kava (special Fijian drink, very relaxing). Here's a few highlights, for more pictures see my gallery:

Chewy, Nels and I climbed one of the Glass House Mountains, it was only 322m (1000ft) but it was quite a steep climb! I sweated my ass off, but the views at the top were worth it (see my gallery for more pictures)

We travelled to the Australia Zoo, former home of Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter" shortly after his death. It was pretty amazing to see the outpouring of emotion and interest in this Australian icon. Love him or hate him, he sure made a big impression on a lot of people. The zoo was really cool too (the main reason for going there was to see the zoo).

Drove along the Great Ocean road and ended up at the "12 Apostles", which are some really cool rock formations on the edge of the ocean (you can see them behind me in this photo). Had a lot of fun exploring and watched a wicked sunset as well.

Chewy then headed for Fiji to get ready for the wedding, so Nels and I caught a plane to Tasmania, rented a car and toured around exploring that little island. We had an amazing time and really enjoyed ourselves. (And I had the best steak ever at the Ball and Chain in Hobart). We went to Freycinet National park and checked out Wineglass bay and hiked up Mt. Amos (452m - 1500ft), which was another relatively steep climb.

Then it was time to go to Fiji and join in Ryan (Chewy) and Kristy's wedding at the Outrigger resort. Tons of fun, lots of drinks, sunshine and a great crowd made this day super enjoyable. I also got to play wedding photographer on my little point and shoot for a sunset photo opp. Turned out pretty good if I may say so myself.

Thanks to everyone who made this a rad trip!

I was so upset when I found out that Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, died. I cried for like 5 days. I used to watch his show 4 times a day. If it weren't for him I wouldn't understand why conservation is so important.
Even to snowboarders conservation should be important because if we don't do something to help out our world, there won't be snowboarding for to much longer. Every year it gets a little bit warmer, but we can delay it if we try.

 Here's to ya Mate!

Crikey I'll miss you

Source Information: http://www.indigenouspeople.net/cherokee.htm

The Tsalagi (Cherokee) are a nation of North American Indians that formerly inhabited the mountainous region of the western Carolinas, northern Georgia, and eastern Tennessee. An Iroquoian-speaking people, they originally lived near the Great Lakes they migrated to the Southeast, eventually becoming the largest and most powerful group in that region. Their traditional culture included maize agriculture, settled villages, and well-developed ceremonialism. In 1827 the Tsalagi (Cherokee) established a constitutional form of government.

The first explorers of the Southeast discovered the most talented Indians north of Mexico. Builders, agriculturists, artisans, fishermen, and hunters epitomized especially the Tsalagi (Cherokees)' varied skills. Knowledgeable in herb culture, they developed useful medicines from them that are still used today. They also developed environmental concepts about ecological thought and survival. We are blessed by the legacies of Tsalagi (Cherokee) oral traditions, providing ethnologists with opportunities for cultural interpretations: legends about man, animals, supernatural deities, witches, and other evil influences. Their most famous leader, Sequoya, believing literacy provided power to the white man, alone developed the Tsalagi (Cherokee) alphabet (c.1820), and became immortalized when his name was given to Sequoia National Park in California.

A series of fraudulent, land-acquiring treaties were imposed on the Tsalagi (Cherokee) in the 1830s. The Treaty of New Echota (1835), in which a small tribal faction sold 2.83 million ha (7 million acres) of Tsalagi (Cherokee) land, required their removal westward within 3 years. The vast majority of the Tsalagi (Cherokee) Nation repudiated this document, but under Gen. Winfield SCOTT, most remaining Tsalagi (Cherokee) were driven from their land and forcibly marched to Arkansas and Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1838-39. About 4,000 of the more than 15,000 Tsalagi (Cherokee) who made the journey died of disease and exposure.

In Indian Territory, they joined the CHICKASAW, CHOCTAW, CREEK, and SEMINOLE to form the so-called FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES. Tribal lands were lost in the 1860s, after the Five Tribes sided with the South during the Civil War, and again in the early 1880s, when the federal government abolished tribal ownership of lands. When Indian Territory became the state of Oklahoma in 1907, all tribal lands were opened for white settlement.

In the 1980s, 43,000 persons of Tsalagi (Cherokee) descent lived in eastern Oklahoma; about 15,000 of these are considered full-blooded. The Tsalagi (Cherokee) who avoided the forced removal of 1838 escaped into the Great Smoky Mountains and resettled in North Carolina, where they formed a tribal corporation in 1889. Tsalagi (Cherokee) on or near the reservation in North Carolina numbered 6,110 in 1987.
