We just finished up two of our spring time shoots and had a blast filming these segments for our upcoming tenth anniversary release KNOCKOUT set to release Sept 1st 2008.

These photos will give you an idea as to how we went from our Grouse Mountain Shoot to a spring shoot on Mount Washington on Vancouver Island. I don't think many of the crew thought we would be getting to our shoots in this fashion.

Big thanks to Jeff Silcock, Brent Curtain, Eric Greene, Ryan Ainsle and Kyle Washington for making this happen so smoothly.

There's a war going on for my mind. The various factions want it for it holds the key to something they seek: my spending power and potentially yours. I'm comforted by the knowledge, however, that if I'm thinking, I'm winning; and right now I'm thinking, are you?

Every day we are bombarded with advice on how we should live. We call this advertising, it's the blueprint for modern life. We need better music, faster cars, greener grass, and bigger penises. Fortunately there are many competing blueprints to choose from. It is still a matter, however, of choosing one of the pre-defined options; free thinking people need not apply.

You guys look better already... Snowboarding is one way to stay out of the war's line of fire. It's an endeavour that, while you are doing it, all that matters is you, the mountain, nature and your friends. The snowboarding industry itself, however, is not so pure. This was evident during this year's Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (and festivals past I'm sure). The most visible things in Whistler village from April 11th to the 20th were: Schick (to look good), GM (to get to the place where you need to look good), Kokanee (to make those people look good to you) and of course Telus (to tell people how good you looked). The most important element of the festival seemed to have been forgotten, or at least was not immediately evident: the snowboarding. If you looked hard enough, however, you would quickly see that it was there lurking beneath the surface.

One of the reasons that I like snowboarding is because I like snowboarders, and by that I mean REAL snowboarders. Not those with fake goggle tans and orders of magnitude more time riding mahoganee ridge than actual play time in the snow. In many ways, snowboarders are much more genuine than most people. They have experienced the harshness of winter head on and walked away with a smile. They might not face this with incredible skill or style, but it does not matter how good they are at snowboarding only how much joy the get from it. Though it may be hard to distiguish a goggle tan obtained in a tanning salon from one obtained while hiking up a steep aspect to earn some turns, if you look into a snowboarders eyes, you should have no problem identifying the true ones from the rest. Rest assured, contrary to the message in their add campaigns, Expedia has no idea how those snowboarders feel about winter. They'd probably just as soon take a vacation to somewhere with snow in the middle of summer than go somewhere tropical in the middle of winter, counter to what is customary.

Although true snowboarders represent something quite contrary to the industry itself, they would be nowhere without it. For this reason, it's important to remember that you vote with your dollars. Make sure when you buy your gear, that you aren't supporting something that you don't believe in. Certainly not because that product has a flashier ad than another. You probably wouldn't let me tell you who to vote for in a democratic election, so don't let me, or anyone else, tell you what to ride or what to wear. By avoiding monoculture, we ensure that snowboarding remains a feeling rather than a look or an attitude. Admittedly, people look up to me for advice on snowboarding, this follows from being a teacher. I always try, however, to make sure to only provide factual information. You should always synthesize any advice with your own needs and desires, otherwise eventually, every snowboarder will be a clone of every other snowboarder. Then the sport will become yet another victim of the corrosiveness of conformity.

Indeed there is a war going on for my mind and it has been for some time now, but the warring factions are engaging in an excercise in futility. The real prize, the item of the most value, is my heart and they'll never be able to take that away from me, I've already given it away.

News and Stuff: Alterna in India...
By: AlternaFilms

Our crew at Alterna recently uncovered a rumor that there was amazing snow and terrain to be found in India. We consulted some reliable sources that confirmed this issue before deciding that we should probably assemble a group to check this matter out. Myself (Eric Greene), Matt Belzile, Travis Williams, John Scarth and Carlo Wein recently made the trek across the globe to experience some of the best riding and strangest cultural adventure we could have imagined.

Ok so I made it up for the FULL three day weekend. First sunny days at Monarch this year. Cold but sunny. I was making laps non-stop, taking breaks when it was a must. I chose to ride as a single this weekend at times to rub elbows. Yeah I shop at the 8th street Wal-Mart to people watch...Get the gist? So i rode up with people from OK, KS, TX, NM, and all over CO. From chair one I had a nice routine going. Up for the day? Oh really where you from? Originally? It is amazing how much you can learn about someone in only a few moments. I found out from parents about their kids and the plans they didn't know that were in store for them. I was reminded that locals don't care for tourists but they take that $cratch anyway. I do credit the "Chair of the Trip" to a church group chaperon who broke it down like this about moderation. "It is like when a cow eats itself into the road" The man simplified it a bit but hes right. One of anything usually leads to more of it. So we are safely consuming whatever in the we were introduced to it in. As we outgrow the environment for whatever reason we must move on to "greener pastures"...sweet, i know. So as you move into this new environment its only a matter of time till you need harder faster more kick ass whatever and thus another move. So as a member of the heard i want to remind you to look up from time to time from whatever you find yourself face first in.  There are giant trucks on the friggin road!

My Journal: Racing Glasses
By: Jesgirl

The grass seemed a little greener today,
It's like I'm coming back through time,
From a place even I can't recall.

The birds chirped on my window sill,
and I let the sun beat down on my face,
It's because of you
.........It's because of you.

Took a long walk,
and let the tears fall.
Felt the sand between my toes,
and the wind blew through me.
I felt alive
I felt alone
I felt.....something.
It's because of you
.........It's because of you.

Hours to days
and weeks never ending
Pen to paper,
a life renewed.
The City, the moonlight,
the ice cream, the trees,
It's because of you
.......It's because of you.

I lived in a box,
the world around me.
Scared little girl,
gave no one entry.
She laughed in spite of herself,
and cried for her misery.
Hidden from the pain inside......but you found her.

well yet again its time for an update, im not so sure where i am right now, i guess coming home works like that, its really never what i expect it to be, i guess the grass is always greener (if you need to be a little cliche)

So joint decisions are out the window (like it or not) and so is Falls creek and i guess basically my entire season, im working now being serious and its a pretty good deal, im a receptionist who gets 4 months holiday a year to travel so i cant really complain. Anyone heading up to Hotham this year and want a riding buddy or just some one to halve the fuel cost then im your girl!!

I will definately be in Canada next year, for all you people who i have promised this to so many times that i am now the girl who cried wolf and you have all forgotten my existance...ill be there next march but only for 4 months, it will be a bit rushed but still good. anyone with any suggestions let me know im a bit too lazy to think ahead yet

Went to the FallOut Boy concert on Wednsday night, these guys have been my favourite band for a few years now and they were surprisingly good as a live band... (supporting act was good too Avalon Drive) I envy musicians and their ability to vent their feelings to such a willling audience, short of being overly controversial they can share all their pain, love, rejections and fears without criticism because the audience will make it their own anyway, it sounds like it would be good for the soul but im not so sure that that is actually the truth

and thats about all ive got these days, im at work now its friday befor a long weekend and possibly the longest most boring day in history...i think ill survive though

f*ck Global Warming: f*ck Global Warming
By: anti-bling

Outdoor Japan Article

Have you ever seen a polar bear drown from lack of habitat? Or been on a South Pacific atoll that is slowly being swallowed up by the ocean? Me neither. The more drastic effects of Global Warming are usually not that conspicuous to us living in the industrialized world. However, if you are in agreement with the majority of scientists regarding the issue, you probably feel that it is our species that is playing a pivotal role in this change of climate.

So what is there to do? How can people be motivated to change and adopt greener habits? Fear is a pretty good motivator, but love is not too shabby either. So in Nagano city on February 24th, a group called Kusa Yaro! tried to make use of both, and give skiers and snowboarders a reason to start thinking about how we are affecting our own snow seasons.

The event was called “Ondanka Wa Teki Da!” (Global Warming is the Enemy) and was aimed at winter sports enthusiasts. It was meant to draw the parallel between how we in the First World live, and how it affects our snow seasons. The past few seasons have seen wildly fluctuating snowfall, and it appears that worldwide weather patters are becoming increasingly unstable.

Of course, using snowfall as a reason to live greener is pretty selfish, I admit., The effects of global warming range from pine beetle epidemics in Canada to unusually fierce storms in the tropics and they affect the lives of millions. But snowboarders can be pretty dense. We have to take baby steps here. I figured that even they could grasp the significance of the dismally low snowfall we have had this season.

After a half-hearted attempt to poster every snowboard shop between Karuizawa and Hakuba, as well as a total of 3 postings on Mixi, the fruit of our labors were made visible at the event.

              12 people showed up.

Not to be intimidated by our own shortcomings, the event went full speed ahead. First off was a screening of a 2006 snowboard documentary called Bikecar. It details the story of 3 pro snowboarders who build their own pedal-powered vehicle, and then set off on a 1300 km adventure to ride at various northwest American ski areas. The movie did not contain any significant environmental message, but the light mood and humor of the film was enjoyed by all present.

Not one kill a good vibe, I decided to forgo the tedious speech I had planned, as I knew almost everyone in attendance and it would have been preaching to the converted.

After a few obligatory statements in Japanese and English about the state of our current snow season, and an urge for people to look at their own contribution to pollution, there was a prize giveaway.  Several organizations were very generous in helping with the event, and there were sunglasses, lift tickets, and biodegradable snowboard wax handed out. There was discussion of a karaoke contest afterwards, but some of the audience had bothered to come from places like Hakuba and Gunma, and needed to return.

If you are interested in reducing your own contribution to climate change, and have somehow missed the plethora of information on what to do, here are some handy tips taken from the event’s pamphlet.

1-      Get out into nature. Connect with her. See just how important she is in all of our lives, and enjoy being with her. Because we won’t save what we don’t love.

2-      I know they are cute, but give your Morning Musume bootleg DVD a rest and read a book about Global warming. Get informed. There is a ton of information on the internet as well. Go watch An Inconvenient Truth (Futsugouna Shinjitsu in Japanese) .

3-      We live in a consumer society that encourages waste. We have to become smarter consumers. Buy less, and re-use/recycle/repair what you already have. When you do buy, try to support green products and companies.

4-      Stop farting. In terms of the greenhouse effect, methane is 22 times as powerful as CO2.

5-      Use your car less. Japan has an amazing rail system, take advantage of it. Or ride a bike once in a while. If you really must use the car, make sure it is running as efficiently as possible (properly inflated tires, tuned engine, no extra luggage, car pooling, all that jazz). Anyone skier or snowboarder who idles their car at 7-11 while looking at your magazines printed on old-growth forest is going to snow-sport hell (where you will be forced to teach Jr High students how to funski on ice at an indoor resort).

6-      Eat less meat. Raising an animal takes up a tremendous amount of resources, including gasoline. Plus they fart. Eat locally grown and/or organic produce whenever possible.

7-      Risk confusing the hell out of everyone around you and refuse such wasteful ‘conveniences’ like chopsticks and plastic bags. You will become very good at repeating ‘No thank you, I really don’t need one’ to cash register clerks.

Sure, doing these things alone can be pretty lonely and frustrating sometimes. But someone needs to start doing it. And if not you, then who?

Ben Gibson is a snowboarder and current world-record holder for being a single white dude in Japan. He currently lives at the foot of Mt Asama in Nagano.

So maybe I got lazy on this one...
Just felt good to play.
And it was upbeat!

Line 1:
The grass,
is greener...

On the other side...

I see,
just where...

I need to go.

To see,
and feel

What it would be like.

Chorus
To be over there!

I bet things are better.

And the waters clear.

I bet things are better.

Line 2:

So I!
Intreat you!

To join me on my

Grand quest!
Just think!

Of what we can see.

And feel!
I bet!

It'll blow you're mind!

Chorus
Lets go over there!

I bet things are better.

And the waters clear.

I bet things are better.

Line 3:
So come!
with me!

We'll never return!

There's much!
To see!

Beyond just time and space!

I swear!
You'll like.

Me to be your company!

Chorus
Lets go over there!

I bet things are better.

And the waters clear.

I bet things are better.

We'll see lots of things.

And notice they're better.

When we're standing close.

All things are better!

Our... own... pasture!
