Your first Alterna snowboard movie came out in 2000, The Struggle.  Is it still a struggle today?

It’s always a struggle but we always find ways to overcome our challenges.
Creating snowboard films is definitely not the easiest of tasks, you have so many variables that need to come together for a film to be successful. Good light, snow conditions, crews that mesh well and solid sponsorship are only some of the various elements that need to work well in order to create a solid film.

What is a typical year like for you?

We pretty much film and travel from when the snow hits until around May of the following year. I guess that also depends on the type of snow year we are faced with, when we filmed Shrediquette a few years back we had the challenge of having hardly any snow, we were forced to go to Argentina in July to make up for lack of footage.

This year we traveled to Norway in July to get some "on the road" footy because we pretty much spent the whole season in Whistler.  Look out for the save of the century which took place on this trip care of JF FORTIN in the beginning of his segment.

As far as going to Vegas for the asr trade show we have been more successful gaining sponsorship outside of the show it seems its more of a good time than a time to do business.

Summers are now spent at our new office on the North Shore of Vancouver editing and going out fishing and boating as much as possible which is not that much.

One of my favourite video parts is Travis Williams in Breaking Ground.  Do you have any favourite parts or sections that really stick out for you in your past 8 projects?

I guess the parts that stick out the most right off the top of my head are Mike Page's Struggle segment, the Poland section in IN TRANSIT, Trav's Breaking Ground segment, JF's Reflection segment, Beardmore's Fast Food segment this year the new faces like Takaharu Nakai and Matt Belzile stood out.

Do you think the internet is killing the video star?

I know that more people are watching our films because of the internet and less people are buying them. When I was in Finland last year all the up and coming finnish groms all had burned copies of almost every snowboard film. Europe is always a step ahead with this technology and North America will follow.  We are hoping that added value to our packaging like the insertion of an Apples & Oranges bandana this year will encourage people to buy the DVD.

What do you see for the future of snowboard films?

In my opinion, online distribution is definitely the future of snowboard flicks. People want to see movies right away and if you have your computer connected to your TV like most will in the future buying and viewing your favourite film will be one click away.

The latest project coming out of Alterna is Apples & Oranges.  What can we expect?

We shot the film in true HD so that is also a new element. Expect a 20 plus video layered intro that will have you re-watching it for sure. This year in some of the segments especially in Matt Belzile's part we miked Matt for his entire part.  Apples & Oranges also has the most cable cams and dolly shots that we have ever employed in any of our productions.

How large is the crew that put it all together this year?

During the winter there are seven production people together and we also contract out additional help during the winter for certain sessions. Myself and Bryant Bell are full time in the office on the North Shore.

I noticed that you popped the question if people would prefer Blue-ray vs. HD-DVD.  What are you thinking of going with?

It looks like Blue Ray for North America and HD DVD for Europe. 720p Downloads were also a big request. We will be releasing an HD downloadable version of Apples & Oranges closer to Christmas.

What would you like people to take away from watching Apples & Oranges?

Hopefully after watching Apples & Oranges you get stoked to go out and shred for yourself.

Where and when can people come out to the premieres?

All premieres will be listed on our website www.alternaactionfilms.com

Any shout outs?

Big Shout out to all the riders, production crew and sponsors involved in supporting the creation of past Alterna films and our latest release Apples & Oranges.

Building on the momentum of Step it Up series, Hilltrip is happy to invite the community to come to the sixth and final Step it Up event at MAXX FISH, nicely coordinated to happen on Earth Day. Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement and is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities.

For Step it Up no6, Hilltrip is presenting an Expression Session including Kostaman & The Vibrations opening at 7pm sharp, followed by a slate of local artists including Angie Nolan with poems, MollyFi with spoken words, Daniel Poisson and Chris Dyer with visual art, Chili Thom & Feet Banks with “High in the Mountain”, Animal Nation with a few raps, John Parris with a few mixes and more.

At 10pm, the winners for the Earth Raffle will be draw. Everybody attending the Expression Session will have a chance to enter the raffle to win one of the grand prizes by writing their name at the back of a Step it Up flyer and dropping it off at the Surfrider table during the session. All the ballots collected trough the whole series will be included in the raffle, so people who entered at previous Step it Up sessions will have their chances to win. Prizes include a 3-day Surf Experience Expedition sponsored by Deep Snow & Surf Experience, an Option snowboard, a pair of SPY goggle, O’Neill goodies among other.

After 10pm, Rainbo and Lexi Moon will perform hula hoops go-go dances to the sound of DJ Jamie Vale.

Also on the sensory extravaganza menu is Martinis at Midnight offering the ‘Oxymoron’ martini, a martini with a healthy twist containing FrequenSea, a unique ‘Superfood’ discovery containing all of Mother Nature’s essential nutrients. This martini has so much good stuff in it that it will relieve all the guilt of consuming alcohol.

“There are so many good messages from artistic expressions; and art is also a powerful catalyst for change. This event is going to be Hilltrip’s 3rd Earth Day event in Whistler and I hope to inspire people to be part of the solutions and care for our planet thought different art forms” says Marie Fortin, event organizer. “April 22 is the last day of the TWSSF, so this last Step it Up event will be like a cleansing evening for the body and the soul and a great way to close the festival and the series in beauty.”

Admission is only $10 and includes a free Cool Tag from Clif Bar and a beer from Whistler Brewing Company. A Cool Tag™ is a renewable wind energy credit that will keep an estimated 300 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) — the main contributor to global warming — out of the air. That’s roughly the same as neutralizing the global warming emissions generated from traveling 300 miles (more than 480 kms) in the average car.

As with every Step it Up event, proceed will support the Snowrider Project, a campaign of the Surfrider Foundation, which aims to bring greater understanding of the hydrological cycle and foster a sense of stewardship towards alpine and valley watersheds. One major initiative for Snowrider is organizing local mountain clean-ups in spring after the snow melts to pick up garbage haphazardly littered during the season by skiers and boarders.

Thanks to Clif Bar, Whistler Brewing Company, O’Neill, Option Snowboards, Spy. Deep Snow & Surf Experience and Maxx Fish for their support on the Step it Up series.

Yup went to the showdown over the city, It was rad good times it was super soft so the huckability In me was high. Hence I didn't land anything all contest Hence not qualifying. The set  up was Rad loved it wish we had the same here except in a run.Its high difficulty that i was trying and hadn't really practiced much of that all year but who need practice jezuz.
Got props from dufficy for given her. But the level of competition was super high killer riders killin it especially on the rails.
The hips were insane luckily I'm partially insane so it was all good. Was super stoked on my first hit hand plant frontside flip with a solid grab and good amplitude. Who knew not I. just couldn't get the last bit of roty in for it to make 5 and bailed. Next I showed off my new two handed tail grab in a 270 which I had never tried with that grab just backer 180's didn't get the roty, good amplitude though I think nothin like fortins he was reaching for the stars it was sick.
Got new outer wear pants and coat stoked!

We at Garfinkels, partner of SNOWBOARD.COM are excited to announce to the snowboard world that we are sponsoring a Whistler snowboarding Icon, DAVE FORTIN of Gnarcore.

Many believe that Whistler is the mecca of the snowboard world, us at Garfs and Snowboard.com couldn't agree more. Dave and the Gnarcore crew have been ICONS of this town for a long, long time. Since Garfs is truly the scene, the spot, the 'IT' in Whistler it only seemed right that we give back to the snowboarding community that has made us what we are by jumping on board with a Whistler legend.

Dave will be sporting the 'DEVIL' at his upcoming comps and on the hill.

He has been killing it already, winning best trick and 2nd on the slopetyle at Sun Peaks. He will be Grouse this weekend then off to Quebec before the WSSF back home in Whistler!

LAST WEEK IN SUN PEAKS

Last weekend Dave Fortin, Ryan Hotchkiss and myself went down to sun
peaks
>for a slopestyle comp.
>the weekend went as follows.....
>
>
>
>7pm friday night, rent ball'n explorer and rip to kamloops
>
>at the base of sun peaks get pulled over by "the man" because the
truck

>smelled like weed. (damn snowboarders) we get, arrested, searched and
then
>released. the weed was safe and sound tucked away in my crotch.
>
>2am, arrive at sun peaks and seek accommodation. everything is really
>expensive. too expensive for us. we convince some sketchy hotel
employee to
>let us sleep in a room for a couple hours for 100 bucks cash. the
hotel

>belongs to  non other than canadian ski legend Nancy Green !
>
>2:30am we "settle in"  and catch the last bit of Back to the future 2
(what
>a treat!) before falling asleep.
>
>4am we are rudely awoken by sketchy and now remorseful hotel employee.
he
>is yelling and frantic. he tells us the computers are all messed up
and

>that his bosses are on their way in. he gives us back our money and
tells
>us to get out.
>
>alone and confused we stumble out into the night, we sleep in our
rental
>till 7am.
>
>7:30 tired, sore and red eyed we check in for the contest.
>
>8:30 am. we spot molly milligan  and hordes of whislterites and say
hello
>
>(skip to the end of the day)
>
>4:30 i find dave at the bottom of the coarse hanging out with Nancy
Green..
>wow! i think. thee Nancy green. i keep asking her if she is really
Nancy
>Green. to which she happily replies," yes " to which i reply,
>"really?"..... wow
>
>again i think wow!
>
>5pm, Dave wins 2nd place and best trick for a rather large sw bs
rodeo.
>me and ryan.......do not win.
>
>5:10pm Dave declares that he will pay extra to keep the rental for
another
>day. tonight we party !
>we ask Nancy to come along but she say, "no, no i have to go home".
>whatever nancy.
>
>8pm By this time we are all so tired that we could fall asleep
standing
up.
>we decide that that the best coarse of action would be to get
absolutely
>trashed in order to fight off the sleep deprivation. we  hook up with
some
>whistler homies and new ontario friends, dave  puts the 10 % rule into
>effect and we start our night.
>
>
>12am  we find Nancy Green at the bar completely shi*ttered. she keeps
>introducing Me to some aussi guys, again i ask her if she is really
nancy
>green, again she says yes. ok then
>
>1am chris dufficy rips my shirt off in an act of some weird wildcat
dance
>move. i'm not too impressed. i look around and duff is dancing in a
circle
>of dudes all shirtless. i feel naked and weird. a nice girl gives we a
>nomis hoodie.
>
>i go back to the hotel room and sleep it off.
>
>we wake up eat breakfast. The hotel got trashed by a bunch of idiots,
the
>front desk people try and pin it on dave. pssssha. i pay an extra 50
bucks
>for losing my room key. we leave town. we wait till we are passed the
>bottem of the hill were we got pulled over 2 nights before. roll one
up
and
>head home.
>
>the end.
