My Journal: Season Wrap
By: leer13

WOW!!!

What a season we had here on Vancouver Island.  Let me list some of the more memorable times:

1.  We went up all season from opening to closing day.  We had spring conditions on the LAST DAY of the season and not before!!  The snow was amazing this winter, with legit winter conditions until April 6.  For the West Coast this is almost unheardof!

2.  During our annual winter break, my 71 yr old, blind mum spent four days skiing.  On the Thursday she hit a little patch, did a slo-mo pirohette and BROKE HER FEMUR!  However, she is already talking about skiing next yr when we go!

3.  Snowboarding in the trees is a blast.  This was the first season I really experienced it and glade boarding opens up whole new aspects of the mtn!  Especially in cloudy conditions.

4.  I really do need a new board.  Although I talked about a Never Summer Premier T5 circumstances prevented me from puling the trigger on it.  DAMN!  Ah well - next year.

5.  Ramen is the BEST lunch at Mt Washington.  This yr we got to know the restaurant staff, which made the food even better.

6.  Gloves are good, but mitts are even better!

7.  Watching my wife rip down the mtn is almost as much fun as riding. Damn, the girl can ski!

8.  Steep and deep really rocks!

9.  Homemade protein bars rock too.

That's it - see y'all on the slopes next season!

               BEFORE                                          AFTER

Hey Everyone,

Just incase you were woundering what it looks like when you break your femur, here's an idea, very painful as you can tell. Today it has been roughly 6 weeks since the day of injury, so I went in for an x-ray and check up to see if enough bone has grown over the fracture to see if I could bare weight on it. In the back of my mind, and from what I was told I was going to be able to try and walk, BUT........ NO!
There has been very little bone growth over the fracture therefore leaving me on crutch's for another 6weeks, now when I go to re-learn to walk it will have been 3 months without walking, which means it's going to be even harder.Sorry everyone I am just venting cause I am very angry, so please no-one go break their femur! IT SUCKS BALLS!

So crazy sports doctor diagnosis on the whole knee pain dealio.....

Patellofemoral Syndrome - A good case of broke knee, literally. some crazy problem where my knee cap
doesnt line up with my femur so it causes pain when my knees are bent or being bent over and over...
aka when sitting, biking, snowboarding, rock climibng, or doing anything else remotely fun or normal.

PLUS - Possible small miniscus tear (what i was worried was the main problem , luckily it isnt cause
its a surgery issue to fix)

stupid knees....

To Do list from doctor :

1. Get x rays
2. get two knees braces  (at 130 bucks a pop.... f*ck man)
3. wear knee braces when doing anything remotely sports like or hard on knees....
4. go to physio and do exercises every day twice a day for eternity....

Thus is life.....

Hey everyone,

First I would like to thank everyone for their support and and phone calls in making sure that I am okay, and for you that don't know i just recently broke my femur last Saturday. i was released from the hospital after a week of treatment and brutal surgery. I now have a rod inside my femur, going from top of my hip to my knee, I broke my femur 12cm's above my knee, probly the worst possible place to break it, but i don't think their is a good place to break it anyways, but very lucky I did not shatter my knee to piece's .

For you that are wondering how it happened, i was jibbing in the Vancouver area, we were hitting a wood rail that went down then flat to drop. but at the end of the rail their is as a crossing hand railing going horizontal to the rail, so if you come off early to the left, then you run into it. and after hitting it a few tims and coming off to the right, the 1 time i cam off left, then boom! broken femur, sounding like a 2by4 breaking. I went into shock right away looking down at my leg and seeing it was shaped like a sideways "V" and started screaming for help. The weird thing is, i was holding onto the handrail the whole time holding myself up, till the ambulance got there. I will hold off on anymore gross details but it was like the jaws of life trying to get me of my snowboard and into the ambulance from this narrow staircase. I would like to thank everyone I was with that day that helped me out, you know who you are. and thanks to everyone for the support that they have gave me so far. Although my season is over, you will see me back in Whistler soon, i will be recovering in Maple Ridge, so if anyones in the area, come by and visit and we'll have a quick video game match.

Thanks again for the support.

So its now April and the season is starting to drag on!! Well maybe thats because we've been stuck in this overcast weather for the last 5 days. I sure hope it breaks for me in the next day because as of Wed. I am off to AK for 3 weeks of heliing! Yep never thought i'd be getting back up there with a now limited budget and no board sponsor but low and behold I am on my way. Doing this snowboard stunt thing for this feature film "Deep Winter". Pretty good gig too as I make a bit of $$$ and then get to shred some amazing stuff with no huge bill to pay at the end. Also a bonus is I get the raw footage to add to my part in the upcoming Whiteout Films movie so its win win situation. What else is been happening...........Yeah Whistler has been all time this year and I managed to get some real good days around......Singing Pass, and some epic runs in the Kyhbers except the day when Gabe broke his femur!!!! That kinda sucked. I also went to Europe (Romania) which was a once in a lifetime trip......not the best shredding but worth it nonetheless. Okay enough of this its time to get outside and enjoy the day.........well do some cleanup arouund the house its becoming spring quickly and I can see the front of the grass so thats good! Soon it will be bike season and lake time.

Another man down.... this time its Scott Gaffney. Some will know him, others have heard the name. Scott is one of the most talented and underrated snowboarders on the planet. While Scott was winning x-games gold in boardercross, the sh*tty US media was focusing on how the "Palmdaddy" was beaten..
Anyway, Gaffney was tagged out while shreddin at Nakiska park last week. Broken femur, dislocated hip, punctured lung, 3 cracked vertabrae, concussion, and internal damage. If you can get out April 6th there will be a fundraiser and silent auction in Calgary Alberta to raise money to aid in his costs of recovery.
Wish him well.
Peace
Jeff
