I love receiving last minute phone calls with the 2 stroke hum of snowmobiles in the background. PortersTahoe.com Team Rider Brendon Drury hit me up and said he and his younger brother were up at Mt. Rose riding around on his snowmobiles in search of some terrain for some snowboarding.

It is always fun riding side saddle getting up to your destination as it can be quite a task. I did bail once off the sled on my belly like a land seal! Out in the backcountry you never know what kind of characters you'll run into as we ran into these slednecks who offered us cheeseburgers, beer and some of that funny smelling "rope".

After a brief chat with these friendly dudes (Brendon snatched a brew), we proceeded to find our zone where we could get some shots. Brendon dropped into a face that was really sunbaked and it was hard to get the spray that we wanted. It was a fun turn but we wanted more.

Brendon got another ride up on the sled and I was scouting a zone trying to find a good place where he could snap a turn. The snow surface had about a 3-4 inch crust layer on it so I had to find an area that was thinner. I found just the spot.
Brendon hiked over to where i was camped out & we planned our shot.

In pure anal photographer fashion...I had to light this shot up. Packing light this time out I had my Lumedyne 400 WS Action Pack, Canon 1D Mark II, Canon 15mm fisheye lens, Canon 50mm 1.4 prime, and my Canon 70-200mm lenses. This is a great 3 lens & one light setup to have out in the backcountry or anywhere for that matter. This is what we got.

Not bad considering the snow only had an inch of crust in this zone. He did break through to the bottom and hit the rock, but in the end it was all worth it. On the way down we had to stop just one more time to take in another epic Lake Tahoe sunset.

After Spending a winter in Whistler and then doing some traveling in Asia I have decided to come back to Sun Peaks for the 08/09 season. Trust me when I say that Whistler IS everything that it is hyped up to be. While living there, I was working at a board shop and my schedule revolved around riding. I was riding 4 to 5 times a week. I got the chance to shred the kind of powder that I had previously only dreamt of.

However, there was a downside to all of this. After years of shredding Sun Peaks, I had grown accustom to the laid back atmosphere and there is very little attitude. Then I arrive in Whistler and am faced with hordes of "Bros"all trying to "out Bro" each other in terms of attitude, fashion and connections in town.  For most of the snowboarders I met in Whistler, Snowboarding was secondary. They were more concerned with retarded shi*t like: where you were partying tonight, which bartenders you know, who you saw in the lift line, who you rode up the chair with....are my pants tight enough?.....is my Tall-Tee long enough? I felt like people were so busy trying to look the part that they were forgetting the most important part.....actually snowboarding!

I truly felt that these people did not LOVE snowboarding the way that I did. I felt that they were in love with the image of snowboarding and the perceived lifestyle of the "Hardcore" rider.

So this winter I'll be living in Kamloops and shredding Sun Peaks on a regular basis. And I am really looking forward to riding with people whos' main concern isn't fashion or who you know, but rather just going out and having fun on your snowboard...period.

Porters Lake Tahoe Boat PartyOne of the most beautiful things about Lake Tahoe is well….. the lake and there is no better way to enjoy it then with friends. On Saturday evening the Porters Crew headed out on a three hour tour of the lake on the Tahoe Gal, now you must be thinking a “three hour tour” hmmmm there must have been a few Gilligans and some Professors. Not on this three hour tour as it was the “Love Boat”. For those of you that grew up with the Love Boat know the era and the fashion for the kiddies that have no clue take a look at the pictures in this post and you will see our cruise worthy apparel. Lake Tahoe Boating
North Lake Tahoe Boating

We had a few captains, one that was actually navigating the Tahoe Gal, and another whom is our fearless leader, Chappy. We had ladies in lovely 70’s evening attire with furs coats, heels and gold clutches, we had gentlemen in sweaters and action slacks, I do have to say that Burton's Nor Cal rep Trevor Patterson had on a wonderful mustard yellow sweater, and needless to say there were a few Hawaiian shirts and boat shoes! Michelle Parker who is on the Porters team as well as the K2 skis team and Orage was there with some very stylish Vans boat shoes. The outfits of the evening went to Lars our web guy who showed up with two outfits and Aaron Gaines, our warehouse manager who showed up with three things! Notice how I didn’t say three outfits, take a gander at the pictures below and see if you can figure it out.

Tahoe Gal

The Tahoe Gal crew put on a great party for us, the food was great and bartender was doing it right. Chappy brought his computer so we could have some Love Boat era tunes and once the alcohol started to take effect the grooving dance moves started to pop up. At the end of our three hour tour most of us still had sea legs as we exited the boat but that didn’t stop us from heading to our after party at Lakeside Pizza in Tahoe City, formerly known as Pierce Street. Do not be fooled by the new name as it is also a night club and they are doing it right there. With free keg of CL smooth and beats to make you move there was no stopping the Love Boat crew. A few left early as they did most of their drinking on the boat, others stayed to get their dance on and others stayed even later. Rumor has that the club locked the doors and Chappy and a few ladies stayed and dance until three in the morning.

Lake Tahoe

I do have to say the Porters Crew knows how to party and I think I speak for all of us when I say thanks to Kelly and Chap!

We just finished up two of our spring time shoots and had a blast filming these segments for our upcoming tenth anniversary release KNOCKOUT set to release Sept 1st 2008.

These photos will give you an idea as to how we went from our Grouse Mountain Shoot to a spring shoot on Mount Washington on Vancouver Island. I don't think many of the crew thought we would be getting to our shoots in this fashion.

Big thanks to Jeff Silcock, Brent Curtain, Eric Greene, Ryan Ainsle and Kyle Washington for making this happen so smoothly.

WHISTLER GETS SET TO SPOTLIGHT BIGGEST TALENTS IN MUSIC, SPORTS AND ARTS, APRIL 11-20

Preparations underway to ready Whistler for

13th TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival

WHISTLER, BC, April 10, 2008 –

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s unique fusion sports, music and arts gets underway April 11 in Whistler and operations crews are busy getting the resort ready for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment.

In the Village, where 11cm of snow fell earlier in the week to freshen up the 265cm base, 10 tonnes of scaffolding is being set up to build viewing platforms, the Pontiac Battle of the Bands stage, and the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage, where headline acts De La Soul, Lil’Jaz, The John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, The Trews, Ill Scarlett, Daniel Wesley, Julian Marley and Michael Franti & Spearhead will perform free concerts daily from 2:30pm.

On the mountain, 3 different competition venues are being constructed, providing elite level features to showcase the world’s best skiers and snowboarders. The Big Air (finals taking place at the base of Whistler, April 12, 8pm) will feature a brand new design, with a 65 foot step-over gap jump that Whistler Blackcomb Events Manager, YP (Peter) Young says, “will allow the riders to go higher and farther than ever before.”

In addition, the 500 foot long Superpipe has been rebuilt to feature sheer 20 foot walls that will see riders and skiers at the April 16-19 competition gain maximum amplitude.

The Chief of Course for the Big Air and the Superpipe, master park-builder Steve Petrie, is also the designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe.

With Whistler Blackcomb’s talented crew of groomers and pipe builders logging more than 350 hours on the venues, and more than 7 million gallons of water pumped through the system by the snowmaking team, the Superpipe and Big Air jump will be ready to draw the best performances from over 200 skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

Saturday, April 12 will also see Blackcomb Mountain host the resurrected Orage Masters, a slopestyle contest that features the hottest skiers in the new school world, on a course designed by pro athlete, Vernon lad, TJ Schiller and built by a Whistler Blackcomb team under the guidance of park builder extaordinaire, Marty Gautrey.

Sporting events with a non-stop mind-blowing soundtrack is not all that’s in store at the thirteenth TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The event’s artistic side has been nurtured over previous years, with 10,000 tickets available in a showcase of mountain culture, from Icon Gone, a debate about whether the best of Whistler is history (April 13), to the Schick Extreme 3 Fashion Exposed (April 18), to the theatre performance of The Chairlift Revue (April 20).

The Festival’s multi-media visual feasts, the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown (April 17), the D250 Filmmaker Showdown and Second Cuts Screening (April 15-16), and the world premiere of mountain bike film Seasons (April 11), guarantee that every seat feels front and centre to capture the action with the ground-breaking multimedia installation, currently being constructed.

The 6-sided screen, dubbed “the Borg”, is being installed by a 10 person team at Rocky Mountain Productions, with 900 foot of truss, 7 miles of cable, and a total amplification of sound of 55,000W. (That’s nearly 800 times the sound of your home stereo, according to the godfather of the installation, Scott McPhee.)

The Borg will then be struck down to make room for the Festival’s finale, the DJ Experience, featuring DJ Dan and Donald Glaude, Mark Farina and Mat the Alien, ensuring that the party doesn’t end when the sun goes down, April 19.

175 pieces of original art from leading street artists around the world are being hung in the 10,000 square foot gallery foyer of the TELUS Conference Centre, for the urban art exhibit, Brave Art, April 11-18. The exhibit receptions on April 12 and 13 will feature live painting from over 40 artists.

Whistler is a hive of activity, preparing the resort for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment, that will turn Whistler into ground zero for the biggest celebration of mountain life, starting tomorrow.

Young, Willing, & Eager and Bidwhack are giving you the chance to walk away with a brand new snowboard for less than you paid for that mocha your sipping! All you need is a mobile phone and the change in your pocket. Bidwhack can do the rest.

Q. What is Bidwhack?
Bidwhack is the incredible new system that lets YOU WIN amazing auctions for almost nothing! How would you like to win a snowboard for a few bucks? What about a cool phone or some kick-ass swag for pennies?!? How would you like to know that you’re supporting worthwhile charities at the same time? Bidwhack takes old-fashioned auctions and turns them on their heads. Most people can’t participate in traditional auctions for the really cool stuff because the person who has the most money is the winner.
We’ve leveled the playing field! Now ANYONE can win!! All you need is the Lowest Unique Bid or LUB.

Q. What is a Lowest Unique Bid or LUB?
A. It’s simple! The LUB is the lowest bid that only one person guesses. For example, let’s say you bid $1.12. Someone else bids 0.25 cents. Ah, but a third person ALSO bids 0.25 cents.  That cancels out 0.25 cents as the lowest bid. Therefore, you are still the LUB with $1.12. By the time the auction closes, if no one else bids $1.12 OR lower than $1.12 with a unique number then you WIN because it’s the Lowest Bid that only one person entered! If you had bid $1.12 in that LUB auction for, let’s say, a brand new snowboard, then you would have won a new snowboard for $1.12!! Finally, auctions that anyone can WIN!!

Q. How does it work?
Bids can be made by using your cell phone to send a text message to 87878 ($1 per bid charged to your cell phone account. Important: If you use your phone to text in a bid that is less than a dollar, for example 23 cents, then you must put a zero at the front like this, “0.23”.) You can also bid by mailing a hand-written bid to the BidWhack corporate address (must include current date, auction name, bid amount, a return address and a functioning email address). Bidwhack will let you know where your bid is at (Low, High or LUB) for the length of the auction to give you a chance to respond. Winners are notified by phone and/or email and all prizes are FOB Toronto, (meaning that you have to pick them up here, or let us know if you’d like us to ship them.)

Young, Willing, & Eager (YWE)

So, what’s it like to be a pro snowboarder? The new mobile/web/tv series - Young, Willing, & Eager takes you inside the lives of riders Johnny Lyall & Logan Short. These young guns hop from photo shoots, to contests, to boxing rings, and even take in some time at the gun range! Follow them as they get up to no good both on and off the mountain livin’ the dream. This is the untold story. This, is Young, Willing, & Eager.

Wanna see all the craziness that is Young, Willing, & Eager? Just click *here* to download the show to your desktop, laptop, iPod, Apple TV, Sony PSP, and lots of other devices. Got an iPhone?  Click *here* and you’re all set to make YWE your iPhone’s latest feature! Watch it anytime, anywhere, any way you want.

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

TransAm: Hyland Hills

By Adam Kisiel
Feb 4, 2008

Going to the circus is something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. My favorite part was seeing how big the elephant poop was and watching what seemed like a thousand midget clowns crawl out of a vw bug. I was consumed in this same feeling, while I stood at the bottom of the TransAM mini park at Hyland Minnesota. An event that I thought would never rival the raw in your face experience of seeing that same group of circus clowns pedaling around on one bike, all sitting on each others shoulders, while they juggled axes.

The event started in vicious fashion as all 130 riders disregarded any official start and started the traffic jam in an everyone for themselves riot. The Ride Snowboards feature was a gigantic mailbox where at any given time you could see upwards of four riders jibbing it at once. The Dakine feature was a plastic sewer pipe wide enough for Paul Bunyan's crapper. The park crew at Hyland set it up like an oversized pole jam or poop shooter, much to the delight of the Dakine twins. Half of the field gathered around the Oakley mini quarter to stage their own Artic Challenge session on the mini replica feature. The High Cascade volcano jump was spitting out riders at a rate that sent tremors across the twin cities area. Dan Liedahl and Tanya Zarling were seen on the Zumiez flat box and the Hyland rainbow, jibbing in search of the Transworld Snowboarding pot of gold, in the form of TransAm top honors.

One of the competitors must have noticed the look on my face as I watched in awe of the no holds barred action. He smiled and said, "this is just like any other Saturday at Hyland, don't fall or you will turn into the next jib." It was at that point I thought this wasn't just another TransAm stop, but a stage for only the most talented, raw, and untamed. I was sure that these kids would jib your face off if there was a take off up to it. Andy Barringer proved you didn't need to jib anything, you just needed to be upside down throughout most of the contest. He joined the list of 40 riders that made it to the Ultimate Jam finals. In the finals Josh Tranby MJ'd nearly every feature and the Hyland park crew added a hit to gap the backside of the quarter pipe. This was not the time in the circus where those little dancing ponies took center stage; it was time for the fire-eaters and lion tamers to be showcased. The winners from this intense showdown to throw down walked away with Ride Snowboards, Dakine custom backpacks stuffed with awesomeness from Oakley, Transworld Snowboarding, and Zumiez. High Cascade trophy babies were also awarded to the top three competitors. There is a small resort in the city of Minneapolis where the riders are under the close watchful eye of uniformed officer's with badges, as they contend to see who drops in next. It is only fitting since these rider's show no signs of backing down to anyone. Hyland MN is not for the soft.

TransAm Hyland Final Results:

Men:
1. Dan Liedahl
2. Todd Kirby
3. Jeff Gabrick

Women:
1. Tanya Zarling
2. Coco Cook
3. Monica Nhep

My Blog: Tim's Butt
By: goodgirl13

So, it all started with Tim's butt.  Yep, t'is true.  I made a comment, had to go check out the real sized photo on sb, and saw the comments that had been left (your ego is swelling, stop that).  Anywho, I noticed someone else's comment, and I will keep this person nameless for posterity's sake (ahem, Melissa) and I realized something very very tragic.  She's actually kinda pretty when she's not pretending she's Pamela Anderson.

Thus we come to the point of this good old fashioned rant (I haven't done one of these in a really long time, it feels kinda good).  Why are we so unhappy?  Don't try denying it, society as a whole is a miserable excuse for life.  Why is that?  I'm gonna take a big old uncreative step here and blame the media.  Yep, I said it, blame the cameras, and here's why...

1) Modern society is incredibly receptive to visual stimuli.  We used to go to hear a play, now we go to see a movie.  Visual stimulus is the number one receptor of signals in today's world.  I'll admit it openly, I had eye sex with a guy at Starbucks for three hours today, it was great.  You do it, I do it, so be it.  Now, what with us being so keen to the visionary world, we're obviously going to respond most to what we see.  The media enjoy's exploithing this keen super sense because it's easy.  So, now that we've established that we are what we see, let's move on.

2) What we see is 90% fake.  Wow, shocker!  Are you aware that they actually enhanced Emma Watson's breasts digitally on the movie marquis for Harry Potter 5?  Yep, the fakeness of the media has even extenuated down the visual pictorials of children's fantasy.  So, basically we're now telling ourselves that real, that perfection, that life in general, is a CGI.

3) The media is everywhere.  I don't even have to explain this, you get it, I get it.  It's gotten.

My mother lightly asked that if there was anything about me I could change, my hair color, eye color, complexion, boob size, what would it be.  I thought about it, then got very annoyed with the prospect.  I don't think there's one of us out there who wouldn't change something.  Maybe you'd like to be a bit less scrawny, perhaps your shoulders are uncomfortably wide, god forbid you ear lobes dangle ever so slightly.  Own up to who you are and be proud of it, damn it.  Perhaps society will begin to accept itself when it get's over it's digitally retouched version of reality.

I LOVE Japan!! Stoked to be there again for the Burton store Opening in Osaka!!

Japanese Madness. My ears and my eyes are overwhelmed lights, sounds and people everywhere.. polite, polite, maybe impossible, karaoke my favorite, sushi, crazy fashion, mini crewsers, best spray toilets ever, sake, photo, photo..

The cool thing on that trip was that we weren’t stock just between snowboarders.. Sweet to have Nicolas Muller in the crew as always but also gravis surfer Kassia Meador and Analog’s  Arto Saari!!
To honour japanese traditions we serve sake to all people coming to the event.. obviously we cheared with them, each of them and had a sip! But that was alright since there was only about 700 people.. Arto (wearing an dupa stylish 80’s wig) takes the mike and welcomes the crowed to the store opening with the gayest Carl Lagerfeld’s attitude ever!! Very fashionable..
The sake session is followed by a 3 hours signing session.. I find it hard to find 700 different very special dedicated comments to give to each of them.. so I just got artistic.. I drew moustaches, pretty flowers and about 650 I LOVE Nipon.. it s like writing fitness!!

Japanese people like to fire us with their digi cam.. so I just fire back with my plastic one way use camera!!

That super people shower luckily came to an end and the whole burton extended crew went for dinner.. I sit next to Moblow and his wig, he tells that girl who was wearing a moustache something like she was nice and doll, or something like that.. she didn’t like it and answered that she could beat him up.. I said he would love it!! So she punshed him in the eye and left him with nothing else then a black eye.. you shouldn’t mess around with those girls who wear the moustache!! The night goes on to a karaoke bar.. my all time favorite!!
Marc and I end up walking with no where to go in town.. a guy is pying in the street, I run and catch the perfect moment and angle.. all his friends laugh, so do i.. I really wish I hadn’t forgotten the cap on my almost digi and actually got the shot!!

The next day, the snowboarders crew travels to a dome.. tons of people come to watch.. they are like an orchestra.. I make them do the HOLA.. I take some family portraits etc.. everyone is so happy and friendly here!! Trevor sings, we sign tons of things.. everyone politely waits in line for hours.. that is what impresses me most from Japanese.. they are soo patient and respectfull!

The next day we are all in Tokyo for he first birthday of the burton store.. everyone sits down like kids in school..cute!! they watch the movie.. we get a huge cake in snowboard shape with bindings.. Jeremy Jones claims he is gay, some more pictures, signing and graffity later I drag Arto, his sushi and Moblow to a gay bar on a Monday night.. everything you need to become intimate with the bar tenders!! Some more karaoke and this trip made it to my top 3 favorite trips ever!! 1000 Thanks to my friend Kosuke who makes each of my Japanese experiences magic!!
