After an hectic pre season I was ready and excited to leave to Austria with my friend Vanessa Andrieux. We go there every year to find good snow condition, I was all packed, board and bags in my trunk and as i was driving back from Barcelona it started dumping everywhere, and by the time i was in Switzerland my home mountains were covered by a good 60cm of fresh snow ! This is when we both decided to join the Demonium base camp in les diablerets (definitely the best place to stay, hang, mini shred and skate up there) and shoot a couple things home before heading to the austrian mountains. We waisted the first day looking for features to shoot along the road and at 12pm, after 3 hours driving around for nothing, we decided to go up on the mountain and shred. luckily the place wasn’t totally tracked yet, I found a couple good friends at the first chair lift, they took me to the good spot and I got chest deep for my first run of the winter !! I can’t remember a better start of the season ever ! sik ! The next day we built a kicker with Eman, Damien, Nico and Tonton not too far from the road in a safe area as avalanche danger was quite high at that time. It was fun to be shaping a kicker already. The snow was deep in the landing, the sun was shining we had a good thermos with hot tea and good meet, cheese, bread and chocolate. Family style ! After that we joined Nicolas Droz in Chatel to get a couple shots, each day we were pushing the austrian destination a bit later and we finally never made it there. That’s when my friend Annie Boulanger called, there was no snow in whistler and she jumped in the plane to come shred with me.. I was so stoked to have her here because I m always the one going to canada or US and for once I got to show my place to a good friend ! as soon as she got off the plane we called Jonas Emery who could eventually give us heads up on the conditions where he was staying.. and we ended up staying at his place for a good 4 days.. We got sik tree runs in still really good snow on our first day and it dumped overnight !! We went to Verbier the next day, same thing, good tree pow runs under the cabin, and the great thing is that no one was on the slopes before christmas ! We joined Emilien Badoux the next day for the same luck with sunshine this time! After that we headed to my home resort with my both of my parents my cousin, my boyfriend and 2 other good friends with whom we shredded all weekend.. It really felt like christmas ! This last couple of weeks were such a blast, I got to practice some Quebecquien expressions, I got to shred for the fun of it which happens very rarely, i got to stay at my grand parents cabin and the conditions were fantastic ! That was definitely my best christmas present this year.. and i wish you just as much fun and good shred !

The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.

Over the past month we have had loads going on.

We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.

Instructor Results

We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.

Jump Day

We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Competition News

Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Next Years Programs

All of next years pricing and dates are up on the web site so now is a great time to secure your place for the long term programs. We have already had quite a few bookings so if you are keen please drop us a line to let us know. You can register at www.pro-ride.com/register0809.cfm - all of this years long term programs sold out and we are again limiting the numbers for next year to guarantee the best training available world wide.

This Seasons Programs

We now have a few places remaining for 1,2 and 4 weeks starting from March 22nd and 29th if you are keen to come out and ride. (Our group training sessions will run all the way until the end of April.) The conditions are excellent and we have loads of snow to get us through to the summer. The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is on again April 11 - 20 so this is a great time to come out. Building on the momentum of Step it Up series, Hilltrip is happy to invite the community to come to the sixth and final Step it Up event at MAXX FISH, nicely coordinated to happen on Earth Day. Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement and is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities.

For Step it Up no6, Hilltrip is presenting an Expression Session including Kostaman & The Vibrations opening at 7pm sharp, followed by a slate of local artists including Angie Nolan with poems, MollyFi with spoken words, Daniel Poisson and Chris Dyer with visual art, Chili Thom & Feet Banks with “High in the Mountain”, Animal Nation with a few raps, John Parris with a few mixes and more.

At 10pm, the winners for the Earth Raffle will be draw. Everybody attending the Expression Session will have a chance to enter the raffle to win one of the grand prizes by writing their name at the back of a Step it Up flyer and dropping it off at the Surfrider table during the session. All the ballots collected trough the whole series will be included in the raffle, so people who entered at previous Step it Up sessions will have their chances to win. Prizes include a 3-day Surf Experience Expedition sponsored by Deep Snow & Surf Experience, an Option snowboard, a pair of SPY goggle, O’Neill goodies among other.

After 10pm, Rainbo and Lexi Moon will perform hula hoops go-go dances to the sound of DJ Jamie Vale.

Also on the sensory extravaganza menu is Martinis at Midnight offering the ‘Oxymoron’ martini, a martini with a healthy twist containing FrequenSea, a unique ‘Superfood’ discovery containing all of Mother Nature’s essential nutrients. This martini has so much good stuff in it that it will relieve all the guilt of consuming alcohol.

“There are so many good messages from artistic expressions; and art is also a powerful catalyst for change. This event is going to be Hilltrip’s 3rd Earth Day event in Whistler and I hope to inspire people to be part of the solutions and care for our planet thought different art forms” says Marie Fortin, event organizer. “April 22 is the last day of the TWSSF, so this last Step it Up event will be like a cleansing evening for the body and the soul and a great way to close the festival and the series in beauty.”

Admission is only $10 and includes a free Cool Tag from Clif Bar and a beer from Whistler Brewing Company. A Cool Tag™ is a renewable wind energy credit that will keep an estimated 300 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) — the main contributor to global warming — out of the air. That’s roughly the same as neutralizing the global warming emissions generated from traveling 300 miles (more than 480 kms) in the average car.

As with every Step it Up event, proceed will support the Snowrider Project, a campaign of the Surfrider Foundation, which aims to bring greater understanding of the hydrological cycle and foster a sense of stewardship towards alpine and valley watersheds. One major initiative for Snowrider is organizing local mountain clean-ups in spring after the snow melts to pick up garbage haphazardly littered during the season by skiers and boarders.

Thanks to Clif Bar, Whistler Brewing Company, O’Neill, Option Snowboards, Spy. Deep Snow & Surf Experience and Maxx Fish for their support on the Step it Up series.

My Journal: little update
By: Kyle

soo... last night was the beginning of cornucopia... celebration of food and wine.

last night:

5:30 I arrived back in Whistler
7:00 wasted off wine.  wasted.
8:00 dinner and beers at the grill
9:00 blackout drunk at earls
11:00 arrive at garfs
11:02 take a shot in the backbar
11:10 find myself in bed.

life is pretty funny sometimes.  Whistler wants to have a reunion... it will only have been 5 years since my grad.  weird.

today it started to puke snow outside.  amazing.

Found this random website that explains great words... here are some examples:

Anatidaephobia: The fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

Abdicate
(v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
Willy-nilly
(adj.), impotent
Balderdash
(n.), a rapidly receding hairline.
Testicle
(n.), a humorous question on an exam.
Oyster
(n.), a person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddish expressions.
Circumvent
(n.), the opening in the front of boxer shorts.
Reintarnation
Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
Foreploy
Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of obtaining sex
Karmageddon
It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like a serious bummer.
Glibido
All talk and no action.

and my favourite...

Ignoranus
A person who's both stupid and an a**hole

"The principal casual leisure of snowboarders is reading, socializing, watching films and videos, and watching television. Here...socializing, in its many different expressions, reigns supreme. By contrast, tending to the email and walking the dog were the least popular. And the snowboarders reported by far the largest average amount of daily time devoted to leisure: 3.5 hours. In good part, this figure can be explained by the fact that many of them held part-time jobs, or were unemployed."

In this instalment of the Daily Barns, I'd like to address one of my pet peeves: people who talk without thinking. More specifically, people who use canned expressions that they probably heard on television or something, which gets constantly used often in completely inappropriate contexts.

Those of you that have read my blog in the past now that I have a pretty nerdy day job. As such, I'm disposed to fraternizing with nerds with their own little quirks. Some of them are tolerable, others not so much: this one is not so much.

One of my co-workers, let's refer to him as captain Long-Short, has the afore mentioned habit of blindly using expressions. I had a meeting the other day with captain Long-Short in which I lost count of how many times I heard the expression: "the long and the short of it is...". The more often it was used, the more it infuriated me. I started thinking "what does that mean exactly?" So in order to tune out during the meeting, I decided to introspect on that subject somewhat. Here's what I came up with (cracks knuckles and pulls out an abacus).

Let's take it as a given that every question has two answers: a long and involved one and the quick and dirty short one. So when one says, "the long and the short of it is...", they are implying that both of these answers are the same. In this case then, the question really only has a single answer. This is a contradiction.

Let's assume that a question Q, has a long answer LA(Q) and a short answer SA(Q). Implicitly, LA(Q) is not the same as SA(Q), thus we have:

~SA(Q) <-> LA(Q) (1)

If I ask captain Long-Short to answer question Q, he will give me the long and the short answer at once, let's express this as LSA(Q).

Therefore:
LSA(Q) -> LA(Q) ^ SA(Q) (2)

or

(LSA(Q) -> LA(Q)) ^ (LSA(Q) -> SA(Q)) (3)

If captain Long-Short answers the question correctly, then LSA(Q) is true.

Therefore by (3) it can be concluded that both LA(Q) and SA(Q) are true. This contradicts the axiom (1) which says that they are distinct; therefore LSA(Q) is a tautology.

“What have you learnt from this” you may ask young mathematician? Well the long and the short of it is that captain Long-Short likes the sound of his own voice and he's a f*cking retard for making me think this much about a useless expression (me thinks I should shorten his long). On the plus side, it seems that not all of the math knowledge that I've acquired in years of University have been lost to a gaping maw of beer. All this to say that people need to talk less and do more (often do more thinking). Less talk more rock as the expression goes.

Speaking of rock; check out what happens when you go on a bender and let your friends cut your hair.

As a sign that I can rock as well as I talk, my friends gave me one of the most rocking' haircuts there is. I always wanted a mohawk but my mom wouldn't let me get one.

There are a few morals to this story:

  • Sometimes it's wise to talk less and do more (or just talk less in general).

  • Using the very expression one is lashing out against is ironic.

  • Beware of letting your friends cut your hair while on a bender. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get (see the previous moral).

  • Mohawks are awesome and you all should get one; it's worth the trouble of explaining it to your boss.

On that note, I'll end transmission here. Until next time,

Keep shreddin' the GNAR!
J.

ok just felt like this was too priceless not to share.
i'm gonna try and get a pic on here ASAP...but ya

today in english my teacher decided to get rid of her candy hearts (you know the ones with words on them that you only get for valentine's day...) so she was handing them out to us
we were in the middle of a test and she's like "no talking!" so much for that...my friend got like a handful and i only got two...so i was like woah...why did you get so many!?
and my teacher heard, and she's like "do you want some more"? hehe yes please.... :)
so she dumps the jar on my desk...i mean there was like an ARMful of candy hearts mwahahaha
so of course like 5 ppl stole most of them...but not to worry i was left with a good handful or two...
so i finished my test and got bored of handing these hearts out to ppl (btw...why the hell is there a heart that says WHAT NOW...hahaha) so i decided to start putting them in an order that could tell a story. this is how it goes:

(COME NEAR) (YES NOW)
(COOL.)
(HUG ME) (OH BOY) (SLOW DOWN)
(YOU TOO) (YOU RULE)
(IT'S LOVE)

we were almost pissing ourselves laughing (remember there's still a test going on...) and the teacher's like what are you guys laughing at!? so i told her...the hearts are telling me an amusing story :) and she just left it at that...she's used to my random outbursts hehe

leaving the class i decided to show her what i did...her facial expressions were just priceless...thank god for candy hearts =D

*Edit: k here's the pic...

          Prologue-

Braches whipped at Trey and Anica’s face as they raced as quickly as possible through the woods. Their feet were covered with mud but it didn’t matter they just knew they had to get away. The two didn’t know where they were going, they just ran. They stopped suddenly looking around they realized there was no hope, they must give up. Trey and Anica’s lives were about to be changed…forever.

1 Week Earlier

Down by the riverbanks of Wisconsin, Anica’s dress flowed elegantly down the riverbank side. Her golden hair swung smoothly throughout the air, as the wind whipped it about. Trey hesitated for a moment pondering whether to intrude on Anica in such a manor. When all the sudden he saw Anica turn her head and look at Trey with those emerald green eyes, so Trey started towards Anica along the riverbed side. The mud clung to Treys boots as he slowly made his way towards Anica.

Anica chuckled slightly as she watched Trey fight his way through the bundles of thorn bushes. She thought that she should go and help him, but suddenly the fishing pole she had just cast into the water started to jig up and down fiercely. Anica quickly forgot about helping Trey and set the hook on the fishing pole. Trey had just reached Anica, when she pulled a nice size trout out of the water.

“Well it’s about time you came over here, I saw you standing there for about 5 minutes.” Anica said, throwing the river trout into her basket.

Ducking his head to avoid a swooping branch “Why didn’t you say anything?” he asked.

“Well, I was trying to figure out what you were doing, but I couldn’t, so then I just looked at you, hoping you would come over here just as you did.” Anica explained, raising her head towards Trey’s.

“Why, in the world did you hope I would?” Trey asked.

“So I could ask why you were looking at me,” she laughed, “and then maybe you would fish with me for a while.”

Trey thought she looked like a goddess; her feet sprawled across the river bank side, he dress flowing down her sleek body, fitting it perfectly. She looked simple enough but something made her so beautiful, even her hair looked ideal as it flowed down her shoulders curling at the bottom to create a childish effect on her face.

Anica stared straight into Trey’s grey eyes, and hard tanned face, she wondered just what made him so ruthless and cold. Trey was 18 and had a very set figure, he was hard and secluded and very rarely smiled, except for when he was around Anica. She had some sort-of effect on him that no one else did. Her laugh sounded as if it was an angels and he laughed at her expressions she put on that cute face when she was frustrated or angry. But even though she could do these things to him, he was still rude and cold to almost everything and everyone else. He has always been that way ever since childhood, as a child he wasn’t allowed to show emotions, and he hasn’t ever since. Trey grew up in a run-down house outside of a small town. He had 5 sisters and 3 brothers, he hasn’t spoken to them ever since he left home at 14, and doesn’t intent to. His mother and father couldn’t support such a big family and Trey was the oldest boy so he was forced to leave home. He didn’t understand at the time why his older sister didn’t have to leave, but he did now. His mother and father despised Trey, he didn’t know why and still doesn’t to this day. But despite all this that has happened to Trey, he grew up to be a good civilized person.

At the age of 15 Anica was very smart, she knew more about literature then you could ever think a 15 year old to know. She studied everyday in the sunroom at the east end of the house, she had many tutors but they were never educated enough to keep Anica busy for long. Anica was very interested in learning new things; her mind could connect things so quickly it surprised even her own father. She has always been very quick to learn things, she is also very tomboyish, she loves to fence, fish, and hunt just like most young boys do. But if you took one look at the childish face you would never suspect it until you talked to the intelligent student. She could talk about anything from philosophy to gardening. She was also very good with children; she loved talking to children and just interacting with them.

Snapping out of the state of being he was in he replied “I would be delighted to fish with you, but I must warn you that you are most likely better than I.” Trey explained looking at the stream.

The hours passed by quickly and before either of them realized it was almost sundown.

“Oh no!” exclaimed Anica, scampering up from the blanket.

“What is it Anica?” asked Trey standing up so she could collect the blanket.

“I was supposed to meet grandfather in the library this evening, for a lesson!!!” a look of despair flashed over her face.

“It is alright it is better for you to get one night off from studying. You study too much you will ruin that perfect mind. You are bright enough as it is you should not have to study every second of you life.” Trey explained seeing her face flush a vibrant color of red.

“Thank you…” she whispered, Anica did not know how to respond to such a remark.

“Do not thank me I am speaking the truth, one does not need to be thanked when telling what is real.” Trey explained looking into those loving green eyes.

“I really must be going.” She said after a few minuets of silence. Anica stooped to pick up her jacket and blanket and folded them both neatly over her arm in the other hand she carried her fishing pole and basket of fish.

“Please let me carry something.” Trey said.

“No I’m fine I have it under control.” Anica explained as her foot slipped and she side stepped to regain balance.

“No really let me carry something you just about toppled over right there.” Trey said already grabbing for the fishing pole and basket.

“Fine, if you must be so insistent take it.” Anica said she said shoving the basket into Trey’s gut.

My good friend approached me after having watched Everybody Loves Raymond with an opinion which troubled her. (It's curious and exciting when somebody gains something profound from a sitcom, huh?) She said passionately "It's sad. Everybody in this world covers themselves up."
I don't know what prompted or lead up to this conclusion in the 30 minutes of sitcom that evening, but she was certainly upset about the values which were being communicated (namely the female image in this individual case) by popular society. She was opting for was a sort of all-out individuality in hopes that it would save us from dangerous self-imposed standards. But, is the standard of image or perfection in society required to produce our civilised environment? And what is applicable beauty, and are we chasing it?

The ethics-imperative to establishing a society- are in my opinion an example of effective standards. Ethics can be considered nonsensical, and therefore must be developed and honed to meet a standard. Nietzsche has a logical role for the development in creating ethics.
If you have read Lord of the Flies, you will remember how it reveals the beast at the core of each of us, and civility is the only chain which keeps it bound to it's post. Remembering this it would seem that humanity's core character is an incurable disease. However, we DO have civility... and her standards are what we use to fight the symptoms of the disease. Really, it makes no difference whether a character genuinely expresses itself, or whether it's instinctive expressions are kept back. A murderer may have the disposition to kill in his/her mind, but until it is expressed or acted upon, it may not really hold any significant value. Therefore, where should the institution such as education, or popular institution have any use? This is where the establishment of standard is useful.
The unchangeable root character is influenced by it's environment and education-here being our society around us. Society influences our expressions.

Nietzcshe says that popular ethics "wants to suppress bad expressions...for the sake of general welfare". This is no longer the individuality my friend was looking for..now we've covered ourselves up. And this is obvious as "general welfare" may not even be truth; for truth demands that it be declared, even if truth is ugly or unethical. Society is what you have sitting at the bottom of the sieve in the end..the ugly and the distasteful to standard have been covered and thrown out. Today's standards each have their own cause...but they may all be the symptoms of an overactive ambition. Self-doubt is that which preserves ambition...for there would exist no goals otherwise. In logic, being the top 5% in the world, why on earth do we participate in the rat-race which we do?

Beauty is a scathing example, for it really is borne in the eye of the beholder. So what are we chasing so passionately? Beauty is pure...as said it's a moment of contemplation, of enjoyment detached from desire or action, and clear, without the articulations of analysis or the demonstrations of reason upon it. And for these precise reasons, it enjoys unrivalled freedom in form and diversity. Montaigne reveals this perfectly in showing that "Indians paint it [beauty] black and tawny, with great swollen lips, big flat noses, and load the cartilage betwixt the nostrils with great rings of gold to make it hang down to the mouth...In Peru, the greatest ears are the most beautiful, and they stretch them as far as they can by art...There are, elsewhere, nation that take great care to blacken their teeth, and hate to see them white;elsewhere, people that paint them red...The Italians fashion beauty gross and massive; the Spaniards, gaunt and slender; among us one makes it white, another brown;one soft and delicate, another strong and vigorous.." We see the uncertain ground upon which we have build our own image. And here is where individuality is appreciated and is tasteful. Most unfaltering is the keen and beautiful mind, which demands the highest respect. Much more than driving our understandings into false values and restrictive idols. It's simply a question of humanity. Truth and goodness show the way. A sense of humanism is a fine embrace which cultivates understanding and above all, a sort of appreciation which is not as grand as to worship. And that's the line as it should be.

What is it about backflips that seem to find there way along with their performer to the vice principles office? Is it their odd apperence of the head and feet and their extremities trading places? This dilema found it's way to shane and I today. After a few hearty backflips off the walls and some benches we were unaware of the pearing eyes of the vice principle. Until that is that he made himself visiable.. and thus audiable. audiable in a very. loud and forceful mannor. we would now find ourselfs sitting in the hard old fashion lether chairs..listening to the words of our elder principle preach about the dangerious risks involved with our chosen activity.... Now during this I began to drift.. maybe it was the lack of afreshener in the air. Or the frown look upon his face as he asked me my view on things. But all the same. It occured to me that, it wasn't our lack of education or our acute knowledge of Common sense.. but it was the thrill of it all. and in partly with the shared expressions we recieved from people viewing. Now, as I continued to pry deeper into my thoughts. I discovered that this person preaching at me about how much trouble the school would be in if I somehow managed to put a dandy crack in my head if I landed wrong.. has absoluelty no perception of what we (shane and I) know. We fully understand the risks. as far as we know we are not to any extent retarded. We have fear. and we also know what could and probably will happen.. yet people like this that was standing lumously infront of me and many like them will continue to fear and find reasons for people like shane and I to stop such dangerous sports as we participate in... I would just like to enlighten them that they may tell us we can't do what we do..but they will never stop us from recieving our much needed adreneline rush...(this includes all walks of indipendent sports, skateboardings, snowboarding, surfing, ect)

Until Next Time
