DO YOU WANT TO LIVE AND GO TO SCHOOL AT WINDELLS? The Windells Academy is unlike any other high school on the planet. Students grades 9-12 can enroll for the whole year or just one term. Classes are fully accredited and they will transfer in or out of any school around the world. Whether you are into skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, or bmx, you will have access to Windells’ 53 acres of onsite fun, plus optional high level on snow training. Whether your goal is the X-Games or Stanford we will show you the path to make your dreams come true! There will be constant blog and photo updates both on snowboarder magazine and the Windells website. Check out www.windells.com/blog for daily updates and pictures. 2009 is the first year of Windells Academy, and everyone is excited for the future. The first ever academy students arrived in early September with big smiles on their faces. We have had the great pleasure of being able to ski and snowboard on Mt. Hood year round. This means 7 days a week 365 days a year. Ever since the students arrived at the academy they have been on snow every day. We have set up multiple jibs and jumps and even brought snow back to Windells campus for a little more creative rail session. The Academy also takes weekly field trips to portland and the surrounding areas. Some of these trips are educational field trips to a historical site in the surrounding cities of portland, we also take industry trips to the many snowboard and ski companies in the area. So far this year we have had the pleasure to visit Atmosphere clothing, Bonfire snowboards, Solomon snowboards, K2, Line skies, Ride snowboards and will soon be seeing Nike. Check out www.windells.com/blog for all photos and info on where and what we have done so far this year!

Everyone that loves snow boarding knows that accidents can easily happen, and accidents do happen on a daily basis. That is why you have to follow basic tips to prepare before you actually hit the slopes, and if you do not follow the basic rules then you are simply asking for accidents to happen. That is why I recommend that anyone who is planning a snow board tip should do the following before they even consider leaving the house:

1.    Ensure that you clean your board and your boots. When you allow your boots and board to get dirty, then they not click into place as well, and you also risk slipping etc. More than anything else you should never deliberately go to the slope with boots and a board that are dirty.

2.    You should always ensure that a member of your family or friends knows where you are, and when you are expected to be back. If you are out on a long run, and something wrong happens, then you are left to rely on someone to find you if the worst happens and you get lost with an injury.

3.     Always wear waterproof clothes. If you do not wear waterproof clothing then you are surely asking for problems. This means water proof trousers, water proof jacket, and water proof gloves are a must.

4.    Make sure that you do not eat something that is too filling or you may end up with cramps and the kind of thing that you have to try and avoid. The best food that you can eat before you hit the slopes is high calorie, low fat foods, such as pasta for example.

5.    Do not consider trying runs that are well in advance of your ability levels, the trick is to take things slowly and try and build up gradually, time by time, every time you visit. Jumping ahead of yourself can actually mean that you place too much pressure on yourself and you end up not wanting to come back.

6.    Consider your friends and prepare how you are going to act based on those that you are going snow boarding with. If the snow boarder is an amateur, then you have to think how you would feel if you were to go snow boarding with someone and they were to always try more challenging runs. You would surely try and compete and that can cause accidents and embarrassment.

7.    Bring a change of clothing and a snack for when you are out. It is good to come prepared and you do not want your day to end early because your clothes are uncomfortable or because you are hungry or thirsty. Remember that when you are out on the slopes that if you fail to drink enough then problems can happen. You may feel cold, so you do not feel thirsty, but that is why you have to try and ensure that have enough to drink.

Making sure that you are prepared for going on a snow boarding trip is one of the best ways to ensure that you have a great day, and so does everyone around you. Taking that extra time, to ensure that everything is going to go smoothly will surely pay off when you are on the slopes.

Mt. Baker, WA – You thought it was over? Think again. With several feet of fresh these last few weeks, lifts running well into May, no crowds, full snowpack, and tons of daylight, frequency TSJ #6.3 drops just in time for those who ride beyond December. From Snowbird to A-Basin, to Whistler, to Tuckerman’s to Alpental: snowboarding continues in full force, and South America/New Zealand deep pow sessions are just around the corner.

With the stellar photography and strong writing that frequency TSJ readers have grown to expect, #6.3 features an amazing piece with freestyle legend Jeff Brushie by one of Snowboarder’s former editors Joel Muzzey, as well as photos from Bud Fawcett, Trevor Graves and others. From humble beginnings in New England to practically writing the book on modern halfpipe riding, Brushie reflects on his career, accomplishments and future. Senior Editor Colin Wiseman takes on the issue of snowboarding’s cost barriers and accessibility with a compelling case for municipal snowboard parks a la skateboard parks. With a lot of kids in snow-bound cities who can’t get afford $80 tickets, is it time we bring the hill to them? Mammoth native son and wunderkind Eric Jackson sits down with Senior Editor John Laing to talk about his rise through the ranks, escaping the contest circuit, and getting kicked off helicopters. China has, until now, largely been a presence in snowboarding mainly via manufacturing the gear and clothing we all utilize, contributor Lorenz Holden and Mr. Wiseman however, break down this emerging shred scene and take a look at a potential massive resort explosion. As if this all isn’t enough, premier photog Adam Clark takes us on an incredible tour of his photography throughout the years with his Gallerie section. Via gut-sucking descents by Jeremy Jones, Ash Christiansen, and amazing landscapes, Adam reminds us how truly incredible it all can be.

Snowboarding: It’s not just for Christmas anymore.

Keep your subscription up, subscribe new today, or consider a gift for a shredder you love. www.frequencysnowboarding.com.

jon_the_rules.jpg

Words: Gerhard Gross Images: David Rouleau

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

short_gondy.jpg

Westbeach's Dave Short and posse, pre mayhem gondy ride.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

grey-out.jpg

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

hock_robjn.jpg

Brian Hockenstein and Robjn Taylor. Check out the polar opposites of emotions.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

the-girls1.jpg

A couple peaches in a big pot of dude stew, Alison Pesemko, Jenelle Pritchard, Steph Just. The only girls brave enough to roll up on this shi*t.

dvx_lens_wipe.jpg

Can i get a lens wipe? Filmer Corey G's rig under attack from the elements.

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

rube_dont_film.jpg

Don't f*cking film me....ok, ok, just one photo. Nitro, Billabong's Rube Goldberg, shunning the paparazzi

The man, the myth the legend, gnarcore.com's John Caulfield accepting the "hey-you-tried" award from Cartwright... and talk about shnetworking, is that a business card exchange?....call me we'll do lunch.

tiene_gross.jpg

DC Canada team manger Gerhard Gross and DC am Ryan Tiene may not have won the race but they won a spot in our hearts. "Its ok ryan, it's not all about winning, its about having fun... i love you man." they would later hug for an hour straight.

Looky, looky who we ran into. Annum's Ian Gauthier, with homie Matt Macneil and Stepchild's Eman Anderson.

When younger legs have you beat, it comes down to good old fashion beer drinking skills, Shin Campos...aka the Creekside King.
