Forty of the world’s best skiers and snowboarders will descend on Squaw Valley USA this winter, where for the first time ever they’ll compete on a legendary section of the mountain during the Freeride World Tour Event wtfhttp://www.freerideworldtour.com> : Nissan Tram Face, anticipated to take place February 28th, 2009.

The Freeride World Tour event at Squaw Valley USA, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, will help set a new standard for freeride competition, attracting some of the best in the sport.  The Tour promises to be demanding for participants and exciting for spectators when for the first time the legendary Tram Face, closed since Squaw Valley opened in 1949, will be open for the pro event.

”The Tram Face at Squaw Valley is legendary terrain that many have dreamed to ride but few have dared to,” said longtime Squaw Valley USA skier Cody Townsend, ranked 5th in the 2008 World Freeride Tour.  ”Having the first ever competition on Tram Face is like the first time Monaco was raced in Formula 1, Teahupoo was surfed and the Masters was played at Augusta. Opening up the off-limits terrain for the competition is a dream come true for anyone that’s driven into Squaw Valley and seen the amazing Face that dominates the mountain.”

Participants arrive at Squaw on February 26, opening ceremonies take place on Friday, February 27 and competition is scheduled for Saturday, February 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to an alternate date between February 29 and March 5. Spectators can enjoy the festive atmosphere with live music and ongoing events at The Village at Squaw Valley plus another village at Squaw Valley’s High Camp.

Riders participating in the Squaw event, which is the second leg of the Freeride World Tour, will arrive in California after showing their stuff in Sochi, Russia. After Squaw, the riders will travel to Tignes, France and Verbier, Switzerland. After this final event, the four Freeride World Champions (ski/snowboard/men/women) will be crowned.

The Burton Global Open Series announced dates for its 2008/2009 international snowboard competition series, which will kick off in New Zealand this summer. Below are final dates and locations for all 2008/2009 Burton Global Open Series competitions.

Burton New Zealand Open July 29 – August 2, 2008 Snow Park, New Zealand
Burton Australian Open Sept 2 – 6, 2008 Perisher Blue, Australia
Burton Canadian Open December 1 – 7, 2008 CODA’s Canada Olympic Park
Burton European Open January 9 – 16, 2009 Laax, Switzerland
Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open February 24 – March 1, 2009 ALTS Bandai, Japan
Burton US Open March 16 – 22, 2009 Stratton Mountain, USA

The all new BGOS website is launching this week and will include new features such as rider profile pages featuring rider snapshots, bios, current BGOS standings and event results per rider. Riders can now register for both the New Zealand Open and Australian Open, visit opensnowboarding.com to check out the new site and for more information about both of these events.

“Heading into our third year of the Series, we’ve got some great momentum,” said Liam Griffin, Director of Events and Entertainment for Burton. “It has been amazing to watch the level of riding at the Opens around the world increase over the past few seasons. All the riders are really pushing the sport to new heights and we’re really looking forward to seeing what this next year of competition brings.”

With events scheduled year-round and in six countries, the Burton Global Open Series boasts the most lucrative cumulative prize purse in snowboarding. All six Burton Global Open Series events offer riders the chance to earn points towards a male and female championship title, each worth $100,000, currently the largest single payout in snowboarding.

Last season’s BGOS series championship title was a nail-biter with four women and six men all in the running for the $100,000 payout and series championship title at the US Open, the final BGOS competition of the season. Only a handful of points separated the top runners for the title, proving that competing and earning points at all six BGOS events can make the difference between winning the $100,000 or giving it up.

Finland’s Peetu Piiroinen and top Australian snowboarder Torah Bright had to work hard to take home the 2008 Burton Global Open Championship titles last March at the US Open Snowboarding Championships held at Stratton Mountain in Vermont.

Peetu, who has never won a major title in his snowboard career prior to this win, said, “I never thought I had a chance to win the BGOS title.” Riders are encouraged to attend all of the BGOS events in order to maximize their points towards the overall title.

Last season’s Burton Global Open Series champion Torah Bright had this to say about her second BGOS title and $100,000 title win, “I had tears coming down under my goggles. I just couldn’t believe that I could win the title twice. I’m really very happy.”

The Burton Global Open Series is also part of the Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour, the largest group of independent freestyle snowboard events in the world. TTR ranks riders based on their results at participating competitions and crowns a TTR World Champion at the US Open.

Go211.com is the official webcaster of the BGOS and home to live scoring, standings, rider bios and more for each Burton Global Open Series stop. Check out Go211.com for more information.

Online competitor registration is now open for the first-ever Burton Canadian Open, taking place from December 1-7, 2008 at the Calgary Olympic Development Association’s (CODA) Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. CODA has been providing world-class sport facilities for Olympic development for 20 years and Canada Olympic Park is home to the exact duplicate of the halfpipe that will be built for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The third stop on the 2008/2009 Burton Global Open Series and a SWATCH TTR 5Star event, the Canadian Open will include slopestyle and halfpipe competitions, offering riders the chance to earn a piece of the $50,000 USD prize purse and gain valuable points towards Burton Global Open Series championship titles and the Swatch Ticket To Ride World Tour championship titles.

Here’s how to register to compete:

Head to www.opensnowboarding.com, go to the Canadian Open homepage and click on Registration in order to register online for the Registration Waitlist. Registration will be open until October 20, 2008. If we receive more registrations per format than the number of pre-qualification spots available, riders will be selected from the Registration Waitlist based on their BGOS standings/results and their TTR standings/results, with priority given to the riders with the best standings/results. On or before October 27th, you will be notified VIA EMAIL (and only email) if your registration has been successful and that your entry for the Canadian Open Halfpipe and/or Slopestyle Pre-Qualifiers is confirmed. At that time, your credit card will be charged a non-refundable $75CAD per discipline as applicable. If your name is not selected, you will automatically be added to the waitlist (which shall be selected at random). Top pros will receive special invites to compete. For complete details/rules on the registration process, visit the Canadian Open home page on opensnowboarding.com.

With events scheduled year-round and in six countries, the Burton Global Open Series boasts the most lucrative cumulative prize purse in snowboarding – over $900,000 – with equal prize money to men and women. All six Burton Global Open Series events offer riders the chance to earn points towards a male and female championship title, each worth $100,000, currently the largest single payout in competitive snowboarding. Following this summer’s New Zealand and Australian Opens, Luke Mitrani (USA) and Jamie Anderson (USA) are in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title.

The Burton Global Open Series is also part of the SWATCH Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour, the largest group of independent freestyle snowboard events in the world. TTR ranks riders based on their results at participating competitions and crowns the TTR World Champions at the US Open. The current leaders for the TTR titles are Chas Guldemond (USA) and 2007/08 TTR world champion Jamie Anderson.

If you can’t make it to Canada, watch the semi-finals and finals live on Go211.com, where webcasts and highlights of the competitions will also be available for on-demand viewing once the event is over.

Sound the didgeridoos, the 2008 Burton Australian Open has come to a close and Torstein Horgmo (NOR) and Jamie Anderson (USA) have come out on top, winning the men’s and women’s slopestyle competition today at Perisher Blue Resort. After a week of dodgy weather, the sun broke through this morning, illuminating the 400m long slopestyle course that featured a downrail, battleship rail and three massive kickers.

With a field comprised of an Olympic gold medalist, the men’s and women’s New Zealand Open slopestyle winners, two TTR World Champions, six Winter X-Games medalists and some of Australia’s best, the day promised some serious riding and it didn’t disappoint. While the standard was high in both the men’s and the women’s fields, both winners were stand outs with Torstein Horgmo nearly ten points clear of Danny Davis (USA) and Jamie Anderson an impressive 15 points clear of her nearest rival, Raewyn Reid (CAN).

Horgmo’s $7,500 AUD winning run featured a fakie backside tail 270 on the downrail, into a switch 50/50 Cab 180 on the battleship, followed by a backside 720 melon, into a frontside 900 indy, finishing with a ridiculously big switch backside 1260 melon. “I feel really good right now,” said Torstein. “It’s crazy, I thought this course was so much fun, better than last year; you could do bigger tricks and have way more flow through the park. Everybody killed it today so I feel really fortunate to end up on top.”

Danny Davis landed 2nd place with a run that included back-to-back 900’s, riding away with $3,500 AUD. Eric Willet (USA) took home $1,500 AUD for his 3rd place finish, his winning run featured a switch backside 900 mute and frontside 1080 tailgrab.

Women’s slopestyle champion Jamie Anderson continued to be unstoppable in her pursuit for perfection with another podium win. She started her winning run with a tailpress on the downrail, followed by a noseslide-to-fakie on the battleship, sticking a switch backside 360 stalefish on the first kicker, into a Cab 540 mute on the second, finishing with an frontside 540 melon. “I am so stoked to win, it was a really fun day and we had great weather,” said Anderson. “The other girls were sweet; everyone was riding so well, it was an awesome day.”

Raewyn Reid had an impressive showing for the ladies with a backside lipslide on the downrail and a 50/50 frontside boardslide on the battleship, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. Kara Rennie (CAN) won $1,500 AUD and the third place title by styling it out on the rails with a backside lipslide and 50/50 to boardslide.

With the Burton Australian Open over, it’s on to the Canadian Open, taking place at CODA’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary from December 1-7, 2008. The Canadian Open is the third stop on the 2008-2009 Burton Global Open Series. Jamie Anderson and Luke Mitrani are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. The BGOS boasts the most lucrative cumulative prize purse in snowboarding – over $900,000 – with equal prize money to men and women

After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star slopestyle event, Jamie Anderson continues to defend her 2007/08 TTR World Tour Champion title, while Chas Guldemond maintains his tour lead. For more information, visit www.ttrworldtour.com.

The land down under was taken over today as crowds flocked to watch the final men’s and women’s halfpipe competition at Perisher Blue Resort. Always a crowd favorite, the halfpipe finals were not to be missed as a field of impressive names threw down runs that were equally as impressive.

The men were first to drop and it was Mason Aguirre who showed strength early on with the highest first run score of 92.83. Fellow FREND Luke Mitrani topped Aguirre’s score with his second run that consisted of a frontside 900 tailgrab, followed by a backside Japan air, into a frontside 720 indy, finishing with a switch double backflip, the likes of which have never been seen at a halfpipe competition in Australia.

Not to be outdone, Aguirre rose to the challenge with a run that started with a Cab 1080 mute, followed by a frontside 900 melon, into a backside rodeo 540 indy, finishing with an alley-oop backside rodeo 720 indy, earning him the win and $7,500 AUD with a margin of less than one point. Aguirre had this to say of his win, “It was tough. Luke made me work for it but it was so much fun riding with the crew. The pipe held up really well and I’m stoked to win here in Oz.”

Mitrani held on to 2nd place and rode away with a big check for $3,500 AUD. Markus Malin, who landed 2nd place in New Zealand at the Burton Open last month, took home another podium win for Finland with 3rd place and $1,500 AUD.

In the women’s competition, Olympic gold medalist, Hannah Teter took the lead early on, with a technical run that combined back-to-back 540’s, into a 360 indy, followed by a Cab 720, finishing with a melon to fakie. “The pipe was really fun, everyone was riding super good considering the snow was a little slow,” said Teter of her win. “It was really motivating watching the guys and the girls throw down their tricks.”

Giving Teter a run for the money was Paulina Ligocka out of Poland, who has not competed in nearly a year due to injury. Ligocka showed no signs of struggle as she stuck a 720 on the first hit and landed a McTwist in her highest scoring run, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. New Zealand Open halfpipe champion Jamie Anderson won $1,500 AUD and the third place title. Anderson, the back-to-back X-Games slopestyle gold medalist and winner of the slopestyle competition at the New Zealand Open last month will take on her competitors tomorrow during slopestyle finals.

Luke Mitrani and Jamie Anderson are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star halfpipe event, Hannah Teter jumped 134 ranks into World No. 21, her highest rank ever. Jamie Anderson stays in World No. 1 as well as Chas Guldemond. Luke Mitrani and Stephan Maurer both entered into the Swatch TTR Top 5.

From 6th to 13th of April 2008 Kühtai hosted the BAGJUMP SpringBreak08 Snowboard&Freeski Camp. The Film&Foto Award presented by TVB-Kühtai was an additional feature to the Camp where filmer and photographers had the chance to get the best shots from the whole resort and be rewarded with 2000Euro prize-money. Good riders had the chance to get some international coverage and present their skills. This event was a unique experience for snowboarder, freeskier, filmer- and photographer!

A perfect shaped park, the BAGJUMP MegaBag for training and 4 IOU-Special obstacles prepared for shootings throughout the backcountry. The Völkl Pro Team was here to coach and film for the Völkl-Movie the whole week and many other international Pros to get some last shots from the 2007/08 Season with over 40 international photographers and filmers around. Some lucky campers got a Völkl Sponsorship because of their amazing riding skills. The weather was like it is in April: unpredictable! As we had Snowstorms and waist deep powder for the first 3 days and fine spring slush with mostly blue sky for the rest of the SpringBreak08. Camp-Hotel Marlstein was located close by and the food was excellent with breakfast buffets in the morning and 4 course dinners in the evenings.

Campers and daily visitors had the chance to win Zimtstern, Völkl, Gravis and X-Double prizes in the everyday mini-competitions like Poker-Tournaments, Best Trick-MegaBag, Night-Sessions on the special spots and the XBOX360 Guitar Hero Madness. Due to the bad weather Saturdays SpringOFF Slopestyle Contest took place on the rails whit over 60 motivated riders giving their best to win money and prizes.

Everyone could get 2009 Boards and Skis at the Völkl Test in the chill area and test their new Board or Ski of Choice. Listening to fine tunes coming from the RedBull Event Car mixed by Dj Seren and eating at the BAGJUMP BBQ/Grill was a good chance to regain energy for riding. While watching international Pros practicing contest winning tricks into the MegaBag not only media but also the crowd and people passing by took out the camera to capture the action.

Last season's Burton Global Open Series champion Torah Bright had this to say about her second BGOS title and $100,000 title win, "I had tears coming down under my goggles. I just couldn't believe that I could win the title twice. I'm really very happy."
Finnish rider Peetu Piiroinen, who has never won a major title in his snowboard career, said, "I never thought I had a chance to win the BGOS title. I just cannot wait to call my family in Finland – they won't believe it!"
The action-packed day kicked off with the men and women's halfpipe finals, where history repeated itself when 2007 US Open halfpipe champions Shaun White and Torah Bright once again took first place and $20,000 each. Just like at last year's US Open, Shaun also won the Volvo for his overall riding at the event.
At the start of the halfpipe finals, four men and two women were still in contention for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series title, and every rider in the running had calculated what ranking he or she needed to take home competitive snowboarding's biggest single payout. In the best-of-three run finals Torah Bright took the lead early with a run that featured a backside 3 Indy, switch backside 720 mute (Winner of Zune Best Trick and $5,000), backside 540, melon-to-fakie with a Cab 720 at the end. Coming off a win at yesterday's slopestyle, Shaun White won his third US Open halfpipe title, ending his day with a victory lap. Shaun's winning run consisted of a first-hit frontside 1080 stalefish to Cab 1080 into his signature frontside 540 stalefish, McTwist, frontside 900 with a backside 900 ender—all huge and flawless. Scotty Lago clocked the Zune Best Trick and $5,000 with a double cork frontside 1080.
Later that night, the big air went down and the Volvo Most Valuable Rider awards were given out. Tim Humphreys did every trick in the book from frontside and backside 1080s, backside and switch backside 720s and a backside rodeo 540 to win the title. Cheryl Maas also impressed the judges with her trick arsenal that included a frontside 360, backside 540 and a backside 720 tailgrab (SoBe $2,500 Sick Trick award), earning her the top spot. Chas Guldemond earned the SoBe Sick Trick for his backside 1260 melon.
Cheryl's overall performance at the event earned her the Volvo. "I'm super stoked, I was just about to sell my old car and I never thought I'd have a car this nice,” said Cheryl about her Volvo win.
Kevin Pearce also had a big day as he took third in the US Open halfpipe competition and was crowned the new 07/08 Men's Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour Champion, earning $50,000.
After the big air competition, Grammy-nominated heavy metal band Mastodon heated things up with a free show on the concert stage at Stratton's main base area from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Be sure to catch the 2008 US Open halfpipe, slopestyle and big air action on NBC, Sunday, March 23 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. EDT.

My Journal: some times
By: yvettegillam

wow here we are another season is starting up for me. the kaos starts on 23rd with the Czech Big Mountain open followed by a mad dash to Austria to defend my title at the Radical ride the day after the last day of the Czech open. from the Radical Ride it's off to Munich to catch my flight to Norway for the Norwegian freeride cup, starting at Lofoten in the arctic circle, heads to Hemsedal, over to Sauda and finishes at Roldal a stop on the FWTQ.

after that it's back to the arctic circle for the Scandanavian Big Mountain Championships and then  at last it will be home time for a couple weeks of summer and then it's back to the snow again.

I love Big Mountain riding and the people I meet doing this side of the sport. not for all of the money in the world would I ride park EVER!

I am a free soul, a Freerider.

THE NORTH FACE AND MOUNTAIN SPORTS INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF “THE NORTH FACE MASTERS” 2008 BIG MOUNTAIN SNOWBOARDING TOUR

Snowbird, Utah, and Alyeska, Alaska, to host long awaited big mountain snowboard competition

Salt Lake City, Utah January 10, 2008—Enthusiastically expanding competition opportunities in the sport of big mountain snowboarding, The North Face and Mountain Sports International (MSI) proudly unveil The North Face Masters, a two-stop tour designed to cater to the motivation, talent and skill of world-class big mountain snowboarders.

“Open big mountain competition is very exciting to the development of the sport,” said world-renowned rider and The North Face athlete, Johan Olofsson.  “With the simplicity of a starting line, mixed terrain, and a finish line, what each snowboarder opts to go for during their runs will be the result of creativity, skill, and risk.”

The North Face Masters features a $45,000 cash prize purse and an opportunity for big mountain snowboarders to pit themselves against athlete and mountain alike.

The North Face Masters kicks off at Snowbird, Utah, February 8-11, where competitors can look forward to the notoriously challenging Little Cottonwood Canyon terrain littered with chutes, cliff drops, and the legendary lake-effect Utah powder. The North Face will award male and female champions of The North Face Masters, Snowbird, the chance to continue their winning streak at The North Face Masters tour in Alaska.  Airfare, lodging, and entry to The North Face Masters, Alyeska, AK, will also be awarded to the male and female winners of these other big mountain competitions:
·        Nissan Mammoth Quest (Jan 14 -17, 2008)
·        Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom (February 8-10, 2008)

Stop number two will bring competitors to the epic venue of Alyeska Resort, Alaska, April 2-6, to push their limits against the Chugach Range’s palette of jaw-dropping steeps, couloirs, and wide-open Alaskan faces.  Adding even more incentive, final round athletes of the Alyeska event will be rewarded with a heli-drop at the start of the Finals, courtesy of Chugach Powder Guides, where they will compete in the final run on an area of Alyeska Resort  named “Big League,” a section of the mountain not open to the public until 2010.

“With the creation of The North Face Masters, the riders who live and breathe this aspect of snowboarding finally have a stage on which to show off their skills and creativity,” said Jason Ford, Group Publisher for Future US, home of Future Snowboarding magazine, The North Face Masters media partner.  “It’s been a long time since the U.S. has taken a good look at the big mountain side of the sport, so this is a huge opportunity for the riders, as well as the spectators!”

With the induction of the The North Face Masters 2008 comes the gathering of the big mountain snowboarding tribe from all over the world. All male and female snowboarding competitors over the age of 18 are welcomed to participate.

“Today's riders are redefining what is possible—they're taking the tricks and skills learned in the terrain parks to the big mountain environment,” said Joe Flannery, Vice President of Marketing for The North Face. “As a company that was born in the mountains, we're excited to see today’s brightest snowboarding stars with a venue that celebrates what they do.”

Fans of big mountain snowboarding can also catch complete same-day live coverage of the Semi-Final and Final rounds on the event website, where there are also videos, photos, athlete profiles, detailed event schedules, registration information and more.

Please visit www.thenorthface.com/masters
Online-only registration for The North Face Masters is NOW OPEN!

Hello, everyone!

We are on the doorstep of the 07/08 snow season and we hope you have caught the shred bug as bad as we at BCSA have!  The summer was long and relaxing, and it’s time to start thinking about what you want to get out of your riding this season.

We have taken rider and parent feedback from last season and made some changes to the Development Program creating a complete athletic experience.

If you want to take the step to becoming a competitive and successful snowboarder - then read on to find out what we have to offer you!

WE WANT YOU!

Snowboarders between the ages of 13 and 18.

The Development Team has been designed for snowboarders who have competed in the past and would like to improve not only their riding but their results.

If you have aspirations to one day be a part of the BC Provincial or Canadian National Teams - this is the next step to making these goals come a reality - in a secure and fun environment.

Here is what we can offer you

  • Certified coach, with international competitive snowboarding
  • Specialized guest coaches for snowboard cross, halfpipe and slopestyle
  • Individual goal setting and athlete planning
  • Interaction with Provincial Team coaches and athletes
  • On-snow coaching at all local competitions
  • 40 plus days on-snow training & competing, including a 3 day Spring Break Camp
  • Training geared towards your specific discipline(s)
  • BCSA Competitive Membership
  • Access to sport specialists for physical development and nutrition

The program is based out of Big White Ski Resort, with the majority of training and competitions happening there.  However, there are the opportunities to travel throughout BC to attend competitions, such as the Canadian National Championships being hosted by Cypress Mountain (Olympic Snowboard Venue) in Vancouver at the beginning of April.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of the coaches’ time with athletes, the Development Team size is limited to ten (10) participants.  We are working closely with Big White Ski Area to ensure that if the Development Team is not right for a young athlete, then the Big White Free-Ride Team is.

If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea - contact us and decide your own involvement - we are open to individual modifications regarding commitment.

this is what you need to know

A Selection Camp is being held at Big White Ski Resort on Sunday, November  25th.

There is no cost to participate in the Selection Camp – however you need to pre-register.

Meet at the Village Center Mall (VCM) entrance (under the clock tower in the center of Big White Village) at 9:00 am with a helmet, ready to ride.

For Selection Camp pre-registration and further questions regarding the Development Program, including team fees, please contact the Development Team Head Coach:  Mathew Galina, phone: (250) 718-5940 or email:  huck_it_large@yahoo.ca

Have fun - meet new people - shred harder than you ever have before!

I joined the CAMP OF CHAMPIONS of Canada from the end of June to the beginning of July.
This time I practiced a lot of kickers and rails rather than the usual half pipes that I ride...

After this I’m heading to Mt. Hood!
I haven’t practice half pipe for a while but I can hang tough at Mt.

長野のワイの家でも揺れました。かなり。止まってる車もぐんぐん揺れてたし、電柱もぶんぶん揺れてました。でも何も落っこちたりせず無事でした。
恐かったー。

There was a big earthquake in Japan.
There were news update on the earthquake every minute on TV.
My house in Nagano was shaking. Even parked cars were also shaking very much and a power pole too.

It's crunch time!!!
One more day left of editing and everyone has been up for 96 hours straight...The editors are fueled by Red Bull and the occasional cat nap while they wait for their files to render...We've had only a few computer crashes and minor heart attacks but other than that the film and bonuses are looking sick!!! Stay tuned to HEART TV and our blogs for updates during the off season.

Hit the gym and get ready for the winter! This ones gonna be a record year!
