Whistler Blackcomb's annual Showcase Showdown went off last Saturday as onlookers crowded into Skiers' Plaza and onto patios to watch the action at the base of Whistler Mountain. After a hard fought battle, Caley Vanular claimed first place in the women's category. Second place went to Molly Milligan and third went to Janelle Prtichard. Meanwhile, Andrew Burns took first in the men's category, while Rusty Ockeneden claimed second place and Mike Osachuk took third.

The six riders, who won a total of $5,000 cash and prizes from event sponsors, including Nixon headphones and Sandbox helmets, will also be featured in Sandbox's next snowboard film "Shine On."

In its twelfth year, the Showcase Showdown has enjoyed another successful transformation and has proven once again why Whistler Blackcomb's Nintendo Terrain Parks are ranked No. 1 in North America.

This year's course was inspired by the mini-parks in locals' backyards all over Whistler. The slopestyle course design, which included rails and industrial-style jib features with happy faces, was a collaboration of Showcase Team Manager Brad Broughton; Kevin Sansalone of Sandbox Films; Steve Petrie master park-builder and designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe; and Whistler Blackcomb's Park Rangers.

Were making a muther f*cking movie:

’ve never been exposed to military life, and I’ve certainly never been in a combat zone - until last week.

I spent a good part of my summer vacation in Afghanistan. Danny Kass, Grete Elliassen, and I spent 10 days in the Middle East, visiting our troops on an "X Games themed meet and greet." Our mission was simple: boost moral. If you’ve ever hung out with Danny, Grete, or I you’d know not only did we accomplish our mission, we went above and beyond the call of duty. It was a small sacrifice compared to what the servicemen and women of the Armed Forces are doing for our great nation.

I went over to Afghanistan with an open mind, to see first hand what was going on and how the troops were doing. I came back humbled and with a true understanding of sacrifice. I mean, I know how trying “the road” can be, but giving yourself for 15 months of your life, away from family and friends, is one hell of a sacrifice and a test of a true patriot in my book.

Our Middle East tour started in Qatar, a small but very wealthy country on the Persian Gulf just off of Saudi Arabia.

Qatar is the hottest place I’ve ever been to - including the sauna at your local health club. The temperatures ranged from 120 degrees during the mid-day heat, and would drop to around 90 degrees at night. Needless to say, we spent the majority of our time in doors soaking up every ounce of air conditioning we could before bolting to an air-conditioned car, and off to the next air-conditioned building.

Other than the heat being almost unbearable, the troops were amazing. The base in Qatar isn’t only a fully-functioning military base, it’s also a rest and relaxation base for solders to get out of the combat zones in Iraq or Afghanistan for four days every six months. This was their R&R time. The feeling in Qatar was pretty light hearted. The solders were allowed three beers a day, which loosened them up enough for Danny to olli four of them laying down - including Col. Cotter on his skateboard.

From Qatar we boarded a C130 military plane flight into Afghanistan. Once we arrived in Afghani air space the plane blacked out completely into the night sky. A young soldier with a thick Kentucky accent leaned over and said, “We're going to drop in fast, they have a tendency to try and shoot these things down.” That’s when the realization that I was in a war zone fully hit me.

He was right, too, the C130 plane dropped like a rock out of the night sky from about 20-30 thousand feet up to the runway below. A “combat landing” is one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced. My face was glued to the window praying I didn’t see a rocked fire out of one of the many clusters of lights seen below. Thankfully nothing “exciting” as another soldier put it happened.

Once we were “safely” in Afghanistan, Grete fell ill with salmonella poisoning. She was hospitalized and our tour was put into a holding pattern. Not only would Danny and I visit Grete in the Afghanistan Hospitals but we ventured around a met most of the Doctors, Nurses, Staff, and of course the injured and sick. Carmen our guide practically lived at the bedside of Grete, what a guide! My experiences of Hospitals are that they always have an eerie feeling to them, and this one was no exception. My heart sank as we toured room after room. Everyone had a different story to tell why they were there. A group of local Men were all smiles getting routine check ups, so they were able to get a job on base. Then there was an American Soldier awaiting hand surgery after his armored vehicle was rolled during a roadside attack. The most disturbing was by far the small children. One little girl lost her leg from an old Russian land mind, and in the very next room a little boy laid out dressed in bandages healing burns from an explosion. Experiences like these are reinsuring my thoughts and wishes to have peace on earth.

Danny and I carried on and entertained ourselves by exploring the rest of the base. While checking out the base we met a group of armored truck guys who called themselves “The Reapers”. These guys were cool as hell and had story after story to tell Danny and I about their life in the military and their tour in Afghanistan.
While hanging with The Reapers I felt safe - these guys were the bad asses on the front lines. They gave Danny and I a full tour of their armored vehicle, including sitting in the gunner’s chair. Spinning around in that chair armed with a 50 cal and a grenade launcher was quite a feeling.

Grete wasn’t getting any better after a couple of days so Danny and I left her and our tour guide Carmen behind as we ventured to a FOB (Forward Operating Base) named Solerno - better know as Rocket City.

While in Rocket City, the Air Calvary gave us a tour of the Heli pad holding Blackhawks, Apaches, and a smaller surveillance chopper. We took shooting lessons from a sniper and visited an artillery group of guys who are responsible for shooting back at the Taliban after Rocket City is attacked by, well, rockets. Danny and I were reminded that we were at a FOB nicknamed Rocket City at about 2 am by our guide McKnight. I was abruptly awoken my McKnight’s deep voice saying, “come on, get your sh*# on, get your sh*# on, we got to get to the hard building.” I looked over at Danny while he was throwing his bulletproof vest and helmet on and started to do the same.

We all grabbed our blanket and pillow and ran across the street to the hard building, aka a bunker. It was thought that we may be getting attacked by rockets that night so we all spent the night tossing and turning on the concrete floor wearing bullet proof vests and Kevlar helmets. Let me tell you that was one hell of a night. Let’s just say I wasn’t missing my flight out of Rocket City.

After our Rocket City adventures Danny, aka Afghan Dan, and I met back up with Grete and Carmen, did one last signing in Afghanistan and started our trip back home.

Although our trip was short and sweet, I think I got a pretty basic taste of military life in a war torn country. The highs of hanging out with the gung-ho soldiers and their weapons, to the lows of visiting a four year old girl who lost a leg from a land mine are just two extreme emotions I felt in just one week.

Again my hat goes off to the servicemen and women who sacrifice so much to protect this great country we all love.

As a snowboarder, have you ever wanted to travel to far away places? Most likely you have and even given it a try. The hard part is finding the right place to go and having an idea of what to expect once you get there. With this is mind the guys at ATG Media are developing a knew way to create and distribute snowboarding films and doing it with a different style then your regular video. This season’s film is titled “Translocation”, and it is a new way to look at snowboarding film. “Translocation” is a 16mm and HD travel based video that spotlights some of the world’s best snowboarders traveling to some of the sickest mountain ranges this planet has to offer.

Instead of filming all season to create one video with different riders parts, The “Translocation” project aims to take a different approach at delivering it’s content. “The video will come out in Downloadable Short Films, highlighting each location they visit throughout the year. The shorts will be available for ipods as well as Quicktime. Viewers can then watch the film literally as it is being made. In October 2008 they will release a travel book and DVD that will showcase all their travels. The book will include photos, maps and tons of information on the hot spots to visit. The book will be created in the same style as those backpackers travel books, and will include a full length DVD inside with tons of sick shredding.

Snowboard.com has provided you with a link to the first short that took place in Argentina featuring the shredding of Andrew Burns, Craig Beaulieu, Chris Coulter and Raul Pinto. You can download the first 6 minute short for $1.99 at the following link.

 *~*Beautiful Love*~*
The Afters

From far away, I feel your beating heart
All alone, beneath the crystal stars
I'm staring into space, what a lonely face
I'll try to find my place with you

What a beautiful smile
Can I stay for a while
On this beautiful night
We'll make everything right
My beautiful love
My beautiful love

Larger than the moon, my love for you
Worlds collide, as heaven pulls us through
The secret of the world is written in the stars
I'm carrying your heart in mine

What a beautiful smile
Can It stay for a while
On this beautiful night
We'll make everything right
My beautiful love

Maybe a greater thing will happen
Maybe all will see
Maybe our love will catch like fire
As it burns through me

Maybe a greater thing will happen
Maybe all will see
Maybe our love will catch like fire
As it burns through me

Maybe a greater thing will happen
Maybe all will see
Maybe our love will catch like fire
As it burns through me

What a beautiful smile
Can It stay for a while
On this beautiful night
We'll make everything right

What a beautiful smile
Can It stay for a while
On this beautiful night
We'll make everything right
My Beautiful la-la-la-la-love

My beautiful la-la-la-la-love

Month One

MOMMY
I am only 4 inches long
but I have all my organs.
I love the sound of your voice.
The sound of your heart beat
is my favorite lullaby.

Month Two

Mommy
today I learned how to suck my thumb.
If you could see me
you could definitely tell that I am a baby.
I'm not big enough to survive outside my home though.
It is so nice and warm in here.

Month Three

You know what Mommy
I'm a boy!!
I hope that makes you happy.
I always want you to be happy.
I don't like it when you cry.
You sound so sad.
It makes me sad too
and I cry with you even though
you can't hear me.

Month Four

Mommy
my hair is starting to grow.
It is very short and fine
but I will have a lot of it.
I spend a lot of my time exercising.
I can turn my head and curl my fingers and toes
and stretch my arms and legs.
I am becoming quite good at it too.

Month Five

You went to the doctor today.
Mommy, he lied to you.
He said that I'm not a baby.
I am a baby Mommy, your baby.
I think and feel.
Mommy, what's abortion?

Month Six

I can hear that doctor again.
I don't like him.
He seems cold and heartless.
Something is intruding my home.
The doctor called it a needle.
Mommy what is it? It burns!
Please make him stop!
I can't get away from it!
Mommy! HELP me!

Month Seven

Mommy
I am okay.
I am in Jesus's arms.
He is holding me.
He told me about abortion.
Why didn't you want me Mommy?

Every Abortion Is Just . . .

ONE MORE HEART THAT WAS STOPPED.
TWO MORE EYES THAT WILL NEVER SEE.
TWO MORE HANDS THAT WILL NEVER TOUCH.
TWO MORE LEGS THAT WILL NEVER RUN.
ONE MORE MOUTH THAT WILL NEVER SPEAK.

Todays thought for the day is a morality lesson on 3 things we all know are fun to mix, but shouldnt really be.

We've all been there, Propping up the bar in some club somewhere. One minute drinking flaming sambucas the next feeling drowsy, and finally waking up in the burns unit, or worse waking up in the bed of an unidentified stranger. All part of being young I suppose, we shouldnt take it too seriously we're told, after all we are young. Damn Right! but hey, dont come crying to me in 10 years time when she shows up at your door with a child doing a very bad impression of your face asking for a large amount of money, or it burns when you pee in the morning. That kinda shi*t can really mess up your day so try and be good yeah, especially as whit monday is almost here and just about everyone in Lancashire is going to be completely battered from about 11am.

Love hurts, love scars,
Love wounds, and marks,
Any heart, not tough,
Or strong, enough
To take a lot of pain,
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts

Im young, I know,
But even so
I know a thing, or two
I learned, from you
I really learned a lot,
Really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when its hot
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts

Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
Theyre not foolin me

I know it isnt true,
I know it isnt true
Love is just a lie,
Made to make you blue
Love hurts, ooh,ooh love hurts
Ooh,ooh love hurts

[guitar solo]

I know it isnt true,
I know it isnt true
Love is just a lie,
Made to make you blue
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts
Ooh ooh love hurts
Ooh ooh...

The website has been updated, there are some new photos and videos on there, including the  January 07 Teaser, so be sure to check those out. The weather has not been to good in Whistler so we have been on some small trips. Burns, Logan, McClatchy and Jordan Bell went on Thirtytwo trip to the interior accompanied by team manager Dave Bernie and photographer Russel Dalby was there to take some lovely photos. There were some bouts with food poisoning, McClatchy getting hit the worst, but everyone made it back alive. Super big thanks the Hills Resort, Matt and Morgan and everyone else at Mt. Timothy, Powder King, Ruines Board Shop in PG and Bernie and Dalby for organizing the trip. Brown, Rusty, Max and Rube went to Sicamous to do some sledding. Brown and photographer Brian Hockenstein took the wrong way down the mountain one of the days and got lost. They ended up an hour and a half down the highway around 12:00 at night but everyone made it home alive.

one more moment
that's all it takes
one more moment
means no more pains
this time I think its working
but just to make sure
I grab the razor off the sink
and slash away some more.
cutting all over my body
running water into the tub
water spilling over
I clean up the mess
only out of habit
I climb into the tub
who cares if its hot or cold
it'll only be a moment more
some of the bleedings stopped
I rip at my flesh with my nails
cutting and tearing away
the water starts to turn a crimson red
my body is covered with cuts and burns
but the pain is in my heart
I slash the blade across my chest
to punish it for loving
so weak when it comes to emotions
I wash my hair and body
scrubbing away till what skins lefts red
the wounds reopen and bleed some more
my mom knocks at the door and tells me to get out
I yell back "It will only be a moment more!"

i like the colors and font selection
obviously, it's not as extensive as i would hope, i prefer Kristen ITC, however, comic sans ms is a close second.
i'm listening to counting crows, i have their discography and you do not. How do I know this, well i don't, it's just probabilities; there's a girl talking to me on msn that likes me a lot i suppose, i'm not sure if i like her, though i'm sure I will once she burns me good enough; if i give her that chance of course, some drunken night i'm sure i will, u know me!... . or do u.. . dun dun dun.. . . . . I don't typically blog this long, though being that i have unlimited use ofr comic sans ms now and it's a tuesday, i don't see a reason not to. tuesday is the worse day of the week, i used to think there wasn't enough songs about tuesday, i quickly realized there is way too many: ruby tuesday, tuesday's gone; what about wednesday and thurs? nothing ever happens then ? friday i'm in love of course, well...  i'd just rather forget about tuesday to tell u the truth. maybe i'll write a song about tuesday and how there are too many songs about tuesday and not enough about sweet sweeet sunday, and then not write a song about sunday..  . wouldn't that be irony..  .  .   Kinda ? what's with the dots all over the place ? well.. . . .that is suppose to symbolize the passing of time, i don't know if other bloggers do it because i don't read blogs, because people who read blogs are losers... .  . that includes you.

(a poem intro)
i'm finished darkness consumed me
my heart is a black broken heart
that bleeds with no desire
forming my red stainful tears
and a brand new scar everytime on my soul
life is a highway
sooner or later i will stop for gas
i will go through bumby raods
there are bridges i must cross
but this time i stopped right close to the edge
it's 6 feet under
i close my eyes
(whisper)i begin to fall

(screams) save me!! x4
i feel the demons inside me
it's driving me insane
when i cry is like an acide rain
i feel its through my veins
pain on top of pain
tearing burns all over my face
in my head
fear and rage

(scream/roar)
out of the darkness here i am
trying to stand
my bleeding hands
face to face with pain again
and i scream save me once more

and it's dark again
keep looking over my back
i could feel him gasping
like he's ready to attack
i try to look away
in the shadows i camofloge
these mysteries i'm trying to solve
repeating in my head that i'm ok but i'm a lier
put me out cuz i'm a f*cking fire
i slashed my wrist i feel so cold
a gun to my head its about to blow

Because the pain of suffering
is so much pain and sharp
it's turning into liquid and running through my vains and in my heart.

The fire burns in my eyes still repeats
it reflects to everyone i meet
that saddens me more
than when u shattered my heart before
it hurts so much the pain of suffering
i cry fire to every now and yesterday's feelings.

I WANT STOP THE PAIN OF SUFFERING!!

Two Accounts:
PINEWSKI'S RAIL JAM
July 29th, 2006
Minnesota

For the third year in a row the crew at Pinewski’s in Anoka, MN felt the need to give back to our snow community by putting together another blazing summer snowboard rail session. Doug and the guys with FreshTip Design along with Pinewski’s brought us the largest amateur jib contest setup ever to hit the Midwest.

The ledge / handrail setup was up to par with the likes of the High Roller Rail Jam in Vegas, the Boost Mobile Pro in Chicago or even any of Mammoth’s epic village rail jams. Along with the help from sponsors, some of which included DC, Nomis, Rome, Smith, Ride and Oakley, Fans, Kooks, Groms and Bros all seemed to be having a great time.

Regardless of 100 degree plus temperatures and scorching sun, riders still got busy and put on a wild show of jibs, bonks, presses, tweaks and bails. Jake Olsen-Elm slaughtered the handrail while Colin Tucker got down on the double ledge. Pat Campro threw down a couple of bangers, but in the end Alex “The Rush” Ulyankin and his crazy combos filled his pockets with 800 bones and a cool first place finish. Congrats to all the shredders who came out to climb the 40 plus foot structure and throw themselves down a gnarly ledge / handrail setup for our viewing pleasure.

Minus the intense heat and a major “donkey dick” that seemed to be the talk of the day, this event was one for the books. Doug and his crew took this whole “snowboard rail jam” idea to the next level. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a whole new standard in midwestern snowboard events.

RESULTS:

Alex Ulyankin – 1st
Jake Olsen-Elm – 2nd
Pat Campro – 3rd
Colin Tucker – 4th

BY SCOTT LADWIG,
STUCK MAGAZINE

This was an awesome day July 29th 2006. The sun was shining, the heat index was in the 100's, and it was as humid as a swimming pool locker room, this was the perfect combo for some down home midwest snowboarding, complete with the 20foot tall bails of hay if you over shot the ledge.

Fresh Tip Design and Doug Fresh had been working late into the night to get this monstrosity of a rail set up together. Over the weeks they had poured their hearts and souls into making this thing a reality with lots of dedicated manhours. Rising 40 feet above the scorching hot parking lot of Pinewski's in Anoka,MN was one of the largest rail/ledge combos ever to call the midwest home.

Midwest signal rider Jake Olson-Elm took home the $400 dollar second place prize purse. Matt Hammer, Dave Lee, and Stephen Meyer were on hand to stoke the riders out on the word of signal Snowboards. One lucky rider from the Zombie board shop in Burnsville, MN walked away that day with a snowboard personally given to him by Matt Hammer, just because the kid was so genuine and nice. The support for a summer event of this magnitude was overwhelming and is just proof of the dedication of the midwest's love of this sport that we call snowboarding.
