Effective April 1 - 30, 2003 the Forest Service will be implementing and enforcing a Supervisor's Closure on Vail Mountain, which will prohibit unauthorized access to the Minnie's Deck area where the end-of-season BB&B event has occurred. The Forest Service issued a directive to Vail Resorts under the terms of their special use permit to shut down the BB&B event on Vail Mountain. Historically the BB&B event has taken place at Minnie's Deck and the event had evolved into a gathering of as many as 2,000 people. The behavior of participants posed serious risks to public health and safety as well as caused resource damage. The Supervisor's Closure will be in effect to ensure protection of public health and safety.

So, with a stroke of the pen, the US Forest Service ended the infamous end-of-season party on Vail Mountain, ending a 22 year tradition.  Know by many variations, Boobs, Boomers and Beers; Buns, Boobs, and Beers; Boobs, Booze and Brews, etc, (BB&B) was held on the second Tuesday in April as a way for Vail valley residents and employees to blow off some steam at the end of the season.  The event started in 1980 as a small end-of-season birthday party on Minnie's deck. BB&B devolved into an orgy of drinking, snowball fights and raucous behavior. During the last several years, partiers spent days before BB&B building large snow forts, stashing large quantities of alcoholic beverages, and, too often, hauling up more illicit substances.

Historically, the end of season party probably started much earlier with the Great Race.  This season-ender was usually held in Lionshead and People would dress up in all kinds of wild costumes. A photo of Vail local hooligan Packy Walker standing on the winner’s podium wearing nothing but a fig leaf and his gold medal made the front page of the Vail Trail newspaper. After Vail executives and lawyers killed that event people continued to get costumed up and party at Minnie's Deck.  In those days it was called the mountain formal.  Costumes included top hats and suits as well as high school prom dresses, horrible powder-blue tuxedoes and ballerina tutus.  The event grew and was combined with Warren Miller’s Mad Mountain Marathon and the Rubber Legs Slalom.  The race involved 150 or more slalom gates at the bottom of Vail Mountain and the event raised money for local charities.

When I was there in the spring of 2002, my brother Travis, his wife Michelle, Mayela and I went to the BB&B.  We all carried backpacks loaded with beers, booze and buds.  When we arrived at Minnie's deck the atmosphere was relaxed and people were lounging on the deck in the sun enjoying the event.  We set up camp on the deck and in one of the nearby snow forts crafted by a group of Beaver Creek's happyshack community.  We took some runs and explored the other various snow forts in the woods.  It was amazing the elaborate complex of forts and the adornments within.  Some had full Ice sculpture bars complete with barstools carved from compacted snow.  Others were complete igloos with only a small portal in the roof for ventilation.  Another was an elaborate maze to thwart cops and security spies.

As the day continued, there were jam sessions on the numerous rails that had been created in the woods.  One was a 50 foot long triple wave that dumped out into the main area opening.  Eventually the traditional snowball fight erupted with the main focus from the snow forts surrounding the opening at Minnie's deck.  Some forts were equipped with water balloon launchers.  A couple of times I snuck out through the woods with my snowboard to take runs down born free.  After riding the gondola back up to the top, I'd come rolling into the woods with my pants down and flipping the crowd off in my black afro.  The trick was to ride fast and get to the fort as quickly as possible.  Poor unfortunate souls that tried to follow in the wake turbulence of my entry would get blasted into oblivion.  I would stand on the wall and yell out obscenities to the enemy forts.  The response was a furious barage of snowballs.  People were getting pissed because we were getting bombed with snow.  One time, standing on the wall, I took a water balloon launcher shot to the chest that blasted me flat on my back.  Heffe came right up like a  medic with the Jaegermeister bottle to nurse me back to insanity.

In the evening when security starts to herd everybody out of there is a Chinese downhill of sorts.  This race to the pub progresses down the mountain. There is one particularly steep pitch where people who are so f*cked up that they just take their skis off and hurl themselves bodily down the face, laughing their drunken asses off.  I came up to the edge and launched the hand bag I was carrying as high in the air as I could--only to find out Mayela had her camera in it.  We all ended up at the bars in Vail village till the weee hours of the morning.  It was amazing.  I'm glad I got to experience the greatest party on earth before it was over.  Good times

As kind of a sick footnote to all of this, the event has been commercialized in a couple of different forms. Never shy about making a buck off the sweat and toil of the locals Vail Resorts promptly christened Siebert's Mad Mountain Marathon and Beaver creek Blues, Brews, and Bar-B-Que. There is no limit to the depth of slime with Vail Management.

Shred news, latest stories, scandalous photos, gossip and up-to-the minute rumours
Well well well, where to start?

Yes, the JumpCamp season is officially over. We had an amazing year with five wicked camp sessions and even had a bonus session at the end of April because of all the snow. Campers came from far and wide to progress their shred skills and strengthen their freeriding skills and man, did they. Everyone loved the new obstacles in the park and took full advantage of them. We even got snowed on during the bonus camp. Fresh powder in April?! I mean c'mon, fuggedaboudid! Keep an eye on the photos section of the site for the rest of this year's pics and footage. Thanks to everyone that shot photos during the camps.

It's BBQ time!

Coach Update ( like anyone cares )
This time of year all the bros go their seperate ways working and taking care of business to pay for trucks, sleds and sandwiches for next year.
Myles is off in the interior of BC treeplanting. Haha poor kid...
Doug is in Cali making $ at skatecamp. He might even move out of his Dad's house this year.
Ole is "working" on Denman. He's planning on converting his mini dumptruck into a snowcat for next year.
Patrick just got some metal taken out of his ankle so he's layed up for a few weeks reading gardening and landscaping books.
Matt, Joe and Morgan have been tubing down the river in wetsuits.

Last Shred On Forbidden
The season's have finally changed and it's been real hot lately on the Island. Everyone's in summer mode getting their bikes, hawaiian t-shirts and skates out. The snow on the mountain has been melting fast so we thought we better take advantage of it and ripped up Forbidden for one last shred.

As you can see, not too much snow at the bottom of the hill.

Coach Joe Conley enjoying the Forbidden Plateau driving range. Joey is extremely excited about integrating more golf  into JumpCamp  for next year .

Coach JoeCon goin' for a dip in the pond with the mutts.

JumpCamp is expanding! We're getting into the mountain bike game with skills camps and tours coming out this summer. Keep posted at JumpCamp.com for more info.

JumpCamp movie coming out next year! Yes, my friends we're finally editing all of our footage and putting out a shred flick so keep posted for premiers, parties, etc in the fall...  It will most definitely shock and inspire all viewers.

From 6th to 13th of April 2008 Kühtai hosted the BAGJUMP SpringBreak08 Snowboard&Freeski Camp. The Film&Foto Award presented by TVB-Kühtai was an additional feature to the Camp where filmer and photographers had the chance to get the best shots from the whole resort and be rewarded with 2000Euro prize-money. Good riders had the chance to get some international coverage and present their skills. This event was a unique experience for snowboarder, freeskier, filmer- and photographer!

A perfect shaped park, the BAGJUMP MegaBag for training and 4 IOU-Special obstacles prepared for shootings throughout the backcountry. The Völkl Pro Team was here to coach and film for the Völkl-Movie the whole week and many other international Pros to get some last shots from the 2007/08 Season with over 40 international photographers and filmers around. Some lucky campers got a Völkl Sponsorship because of their amazing riding skills. The weather was like it is in April: unpredictable! As we had Snowstorms and waist deep powder for the first 3 days and fine spring slush with mostly blue sky for the rest of the SpringBreak08. Camp-Hotel Marlstein was located close by and the food was excellent with breakfast buffets in the morning and 4 course dinners in the evenings.

Campers and daily visitors had the chance to win Zimtstern, Völkl, Gravis and X-Double prizes in the everyday mini-competitions like Poker-Tournaments, Best Trick-MegaBag, Night-Sessions on the special spots and the XBOX360 Guitar Hero Madness. Due to the bad weather Saturdays SpringOFF Slopestyle Contest took place on the rails whit over 60 motivated riders giving their best to win money and prizes.

Everyone could get 2009 Boards and Skis at the Völkl Test in the chill area and test their new Board or Ski of Choice. Listening to fine tunes coming from the RedBull Event Car mixed by Dj Seren and eating at the BAGJUMP BBQ/Grill was a good chance to regain energy for riding. While watching international Pros practicing contest winning tricks into the MegaBag not only media but also the crowd and people passing by took out the camera to capture the action.

This month kicked off with some awesome snow and cold winter conditions. We had some excellent fresh powder riding for April fools day thanks to some short hikes into the high alpine. We are currently in the middle of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival here in Whistler which means lots of free bands in the village and world class snowboard competitions.

Local Camp News

At camp things are starting to slow down a little with only onr more week of programs for the winter calendar. That doesn't mean that we are slowing down as we are busy preparing for summer with our new NZ trip (Which is happening in September) as well as summer camp training in June and July. If you are keen to come out to Whistler the you can now book for new winter for our freestyle and freeride snowboard instructor training. If you would like to come to NZ you can check out the information on-line at

Cooler Magazine

Keep an eye out for Cooler Magazine on the shelves at your local news agent. Cherry from http://www.coolermag.com was just out at camp three weeks ago to check us out and write a story about our programs. They are a womens snow, surf and lifestyle magazine out of Europe which is an alternative lifestyle haven for young women.

New Zealand 'World Trip'

If you have ever dreamed about snowboarding in New Zealand and would like to come with our Pro Ride limited numbers adult (18+) improvement camp please let us know - there are now 10 spots available for our 8 and 11 day trip to Wanaka NZ (Middle Earth for those who have watched Lord of the Rings) - the date is set for September 6th. If you are already in NZ or planning to be there you can drop into our 5 of 6 day training only clinic. Drop us an email if you are keen to snowboard@pro-ride.com - you can check out the web page at http://www.pro-ride.com/new-zealand-snowboard-camps.cfm We already have several bookings and lots of expressions of interest. This will be a super fun holiday experience with the flexibility for us to be able to switch up our schedule based on conditions and the groups riding goals. We have 4 star comfortable accommodations with a gym, heated pool and bbq area so when we are off the slopes we will be living in style. We are also going to partake in some jet boating, bungee, snowmobiling and heliskiing for those who are keen as optional extras.

Camper News

Our most recent Level 1 and 2 candidates all dominated their exams with above standard being a common thread for many of the results sheets. We had a huge party at the end of March with many of the long term campers finishing up for the winter. Most of the crew have decided to stay in town and ride until the end of the April and make the most of the excellent snow conditions.

Coach News

A couple of weekends ago the Canadian Nationals half pipe competition was on down in Vancouver at Cypress Mountain. Crispin, Ryan and Neil all went down for the event and came 4th, 6th and 9th. Katie went down to represent the women and came 12th. In other coach news Dylan is still slaving away on the house he is building down in Squamish and is planning on heading east for the summer to build log homes. Duncan was in Toronto with his girlfriend and jsut got back. Lisa and Luke are planning on heading down to Mt Buller in Australia for the summer snow sliding season and Ants L is hanging in Whistler for the summer and playing golf.

Mountain News

As most of the world’s ski resorts close for winter 07-08, Whistler has announced more than two months of its long snowsports season is still ahead. Skiing and riding on Whistler Mountain will continue until April 20th. Spring skiing then continues on Blackcomb Mountain from Monday, April 21 through to Sunday, June 8th. After that the Blackcomb glacier is open for summer snow sports.

The resort currently has a snow base of 265cm and will have 3,000 to 2,500 acres remaining open for May and the first week of June.

Blackcomb Mountain will also debut a new terrain park through to the end of May in the Jersey Cream area. Opening on April 21st, it will feature a mix of small, medium as well as large jibs and jumps built for the Orage Masters.

Last Sunday was the last day of the season at Stevens Pass. It was pretty fun. Nice weather, decent snow, and the pond skimming event was hilarious. El came out to ride the PNW again the day before and got some runs through the park with him. Too bad he missed the fun on Sunday though. Looks like Alpy will be open in to May, and of course Baker to the end of April. So I'll probably hit either up a couple times before I pack it in. Last hoorah will be Mt. Bachelor, May 17th weekend. That will kick ass. Then it's on to mountain bikes and BBQs!! Bring on the summer.

I’m not gonna lie, I don’t remember the entire weekend. But one thing I can say is there was a good group, great snow, and never a dull moment! I’ll try and piece it together...

I get up around 9:30 Friday, March 14th. I grab a shower, eat a pancake and head out the door. I get to Al and Brien’s house around 10:00, Brien’s still in bed and Al’s out shopping for trip supplies (I got mine the day before.) Which consists mostly of Booze and Energy Drinks. So he gets back with Arby, his sister’s soon to be husband. (A little Fun Fact: He proposed to her at PowderKing on an Earlier trip that year.) So Judy and Arby take off to Grand Prairie to pick up supplies and Mike and Ray for the trip. So we load up the truck and head to Donnelly for lunch at Kan’s Corner. Than we go and pick up Amanda and the rest of our shi*t, which we forgot but remembered on our way to lunch. We out of town by 1. So we get to Rycroft, buy some snacks and huge cans of Monster, 710ml! Wicked! We’re between Dawson Creek and Chetwyne, we hit a Check-stop, just after we literally molested a hot chick and her good-looking mom, with a sign that reads "Call Me! 1-780-837-8869" (Brien’s Cell Number! LoL.) Luckily we don’t get messed with, but the cop acted like Brien stole the truck, checking his plate and his tires/rims. Why the tire? We’ll never know. So we get to P.K., and our A-Frame accomadations. We unload and Start Socializing. We start drinking as we check the place out and its wicked! A total party house! A drum set, 3 Guitars, and a Gas Fireplace and huge windows, with a wicked view of the mountains! So far there is 7 of us, Me, Al, Brien, Amanda, Jody, Arby, Mike and Little Ray, the youngest of the group, a cool 10 years young. So we start playing 31... with drinks. So I suck at drinking game, and I lose hard since the have turned to shots. By the last couple rounds I was doing 4, 6 and 8 shot hands. The last hand of the game, I lose, 8 shots, I say, "f*ck It" and Chug half a bottle of Cherry Whiskey and go to bed. But not before Matt and Guss show up. Matt drinks 2 thirds of a 26 of J.D. and then has a beer and Pukes a huge puddle. I fix the toilet for the third time and finally go to bed.

Al and I awake to Matt Bangin’ on the drums and yelling "Wake up a**holes!" Its 7:00 in the Morning! f*ck! And I’m as drunk as I was when I went to bed! So we roll out of bed around 8, and Matt’s still drunk too! Wicked! We all eat breakfast, suit up, and head out. Me, Matt, and Al jump on the back of Arby and Jody’s Jeep. We get a lot of smiles as we roll into the P.K. parking lot. So we get out lift tickets and head up the Mountain. We get to the top of the T-bar, me , Matt, and Al are going to hike to the summit, to our surprise everyone is coming, even little Ray and Jody! So we hike to the top. I don’t know if anyone elsa felt as light headed and as drunk as me and Matt from the night before but hell did that make a harsh hike! Our group breaks up into two groups. Mellow group consists of Arby, Judy, Ray, Guss, Amanda, and Brien. The Gnar group is Me, Matt, Al, and Mike. We ride the trees all the way back to the A-Frame for lunch. So we eat and Bullshi*t for a bit than header back out. We meet up with the rest of the group and shred the rest of the day? We end the day back at the A-Frame, and we invent a new drinking game called "Spin Draw" you pick a card, and if your is the lowest you have to take a shot, spin on a stool 10 times around fast, and take another shot. I got screwed in this game as usual. Pulling the most low cards, thus taking the most shots and rides on the stool. After my last shot I head outside to cool down and spit a lot. So I’m buzzin’ pretty good now, cooking stakes on the BBQ, when Arby says, "Lets go hit that roof, lets just go and session something." So after supper all us guys go out and build a jump, but its so dark by the time its ready, that no one sticks anything, except landing on there asses (Good thing I was wearing my butt-pads, and it was slightly powdered up.) So we head in and watch some footage from the day on the TV, have some beers before we call it a night.

So we get up the next day, eat breakie, get geared up and head out the door. We jump on the back of the jeep again for the ride to the hill. So we go to the top of the T- bar and ride down to Satisfaction and have a beer for the trip like usual tradition. Than we ride the day, I’ve been filming most of the time with my Goggle-Cam, and got some rad footage of jumps and Tree-riding (2 GB worth! Probley only 10 minuets after editing.) The day ends with everyone back at the A-Frame having drinks, packing up, and watching the days footage. We all load into our Vehicles after saying our goodbyes and make our trips back home...

Wow, I remember quiet a bit! A damn good trip, with some damn fun people. I’m going back again, next chance I get!

The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.

Over the past month we have had loads going on.

We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.

Instructor Results

We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.

Jump Day

We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Coach Lance Cyr Superman Front Flip

Competition News

Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Next Years Programs

All of next years pricing and dates are up on the web site so now is a great time to secure your place for the long term programs. We have already had quite a few bookings so if you are keen please drop us a line to let us know. You can register at www.pro-ride.com/register0809.cfm - all of this years long term programs sold out and we are again limiting the numbers for next year to guarantee the best training available world wide.

This Seasons Programs

We now have a few places remaining for 1,2 and 4 weeks starting from March 22nd and 29th if you are keen to come out and ride. (Our group training sessions will run all the way until the end of April.) The conditions are excellent and we have loads of snow to get us through to the summer. The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is on again April 11 - 20 so this is a great time to come out. Check out http://whistler.mtv.ca/ - there will be 50 free live concerts, big air snowboard competition, arts events, endless night life and the best spring riding in the world. You can register on-line at www.pro-ride.com/register.cfm This will be your last chance for the season to gain your instructor certification, fine turn your freeriding skills or get your park shred on with the Pro Ride coaches.

Summer Vacation - New Zealand 'World Trip'

If you have ever dreamed about snowboarding in New Zealand and would like to come with our Pro Ride limited numbers adult (18+) improvement camp please let us know - there will be 12 spots available for our 8 and 11 day trip to Wanaka NZ (Middle Earth for those who have watched Lord of the Rings) - the date is set for September 6th. If you are already in NZ or planning to be there you can drop into our 5 of 6 day training only clinic. Drop us an email if you are keen to snowboard@pro-ride.com - you can check out the web page at www.pro-ride.com/new-zealand-snowboard-camps.cfm We already have several bookings and lots of expressions of interest.

Summer Camp

The Summer Glacier Camps are on again this year. This is perfect for the junior riders who can't come and train with us during the winter months. If you can't get enough during the winter and you want to come and ride the Blackcomb Glacier and the best halfpipe then check out www.pro-ride.com/summercamp/index.cfm

Summer Camp Dates for 2008

Session #1 June 27 - July 4

Session #2 July 4 - 11

Session #3 July 11 - 18

That's it folks. Lots more shredding to be had this winter so if you are keen to come out let us know and we will show you a fantastic time.

Keep an eye on the www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm page for all the latest pictures from the camp.

If you have any questions for us or feedback please drop us an email at

snowboard@pro-ride.com and registrations can be made on-line at www.pro-ride.com/register.cfm

Have a great month

See you soon!

Just when you thought Fridays in Whistler couldn't get any cooler. Long time whistler local Jeff Paterson (no, not the photog, a different one) had the smarts to bring in local icon Wes Makepeace to fuel the night at the Fitz pub in the upper village. Wes shows no mercy as he belts and shouts his ever popular whiskey ramblings and horse musical renditions of everything from Warren Zevon to Bob Dylan. If your lucky he'll play the room-filling sing-along "War is hell" which was made popular as the credits track to the mind blowingly insane shred flick POP by Absinthe Film's. Or my favorite "Winter hills of the shred dogs" which also found its way on to a shred sound track as Sean Johnson wisely chose it to end the highly popular trick flick PROMO COPY, damn that one almost wore out my dvd player. As of late Wes has been leaking some gems from his soon to be released album, although don't ask him about it though cause he doesn't know when its coming out either.wes_arm_up.jpgput your hand up if you wanna partyThe Fitz Pub which use to be BBK's is located up by the Chateau whistler so there' always a bunch of uptight tourists to piss off as you stumble out of the tiny pub for a smoke and a joke. The night has become so popular that it almost imploded on it self two weeks ago when the room got so packed you couldn't even move. The next thing you know you'd been pushed around so much that you were standing next to Wes bumping his whiskey and kicking the cardboard box that his percussionist Mark Bannock uses as a make shift base drum. I'm serious, the box gets duct taped to the floor and fixed with a kick pedal. The only problem with the box is... well, its a cardboard box and i'll be interested to see how long it lasts as it serves as a drip catcher for the barrage of drinks that gets relayed between the two as they put the all-you-can-drink-for-the-band rule to the test.bannock-copy.jpgWhy are drummers always so agro? "The box" and the angriest photo you'll ever see of Mark bannock Wes Makepeace and Mark Bannock play every Friday night at the Fitz Pub in Whitsler at around 9 or 10pm. See you there...if you can get in.
