Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: Heavenly pow stashes & snow slashes
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

Favorites. We all have them; whether its ride buddies, afternoon snacks or secret spots. I frequently get asked on chairlift rides, “Where’s your favorite spot? What’s your favorite mountain?” I could answer that question very quickly and easily but I won’t get into that now.

What I will say is that 7th Heaven doesn’t usually fall under the “favorite” category for me, but for some reason I was drawn there every day of my weekend. Perhaps it was the sunny skies, fresh lines or good group of friends, but regardless it was awesome.

It started, as it always does, early Sunday morning with a coffee and a few calls to friends. A bunch of us met at the base of the Excalibur Gondola and headed up Blackcomb. Most of the mountain was pretty busy as it snowed 17cms the night before and the alpine hadn’t opened yet, so we cruised around the Jersey Cream area to get a feel for the snow - soft and cold but it was warming up fast!

As soon as the light board switched 7th Heaven to green (open!) we shot over to 7th Ave and cut down through the trees to Expressway. Nothing beats cutting fresh lines and hearing your friends holler as they do the same! It was clearly a tree run day so at the top of 7th we headed far skier’s right for the trees under the water reservoir. It was as if no one knew they existed! The only tracks I encountered were those of my friends in front of me.

I must admit, after many years riding these mountains, it was the first time I have ever paid those trees any attention and now I get why so many people are in love with 7th Heaven!

I then spent the next couple of days exploring that whole zone, revisiting the trees and doing a few zippy laps on Cloud 9. I most definitely had a good time and as that classic Whistler bumper sticker says, “Go to Heaven, Ski like Hell!” I did exactly that! (Minus the skiing part…)

Keep on shredding!

Finsihed up with Vail/Beaver Creek at the beginning of December.  Snow was great!  Got through the soreness and had some great blue runs.  Great way to get back into the season!  Got season passes this year, so I'm making it a point to go often - better value that way!

Breckenridge over the holidays was great too.  On the 7th day - I broke a rib!  My chest landed on my wrist guard and I heard the pop.  It still aches a bit, but I should be ready for my next trip in February!!!

Holy crap.. Did you see that Party Snake teaser yet? If so there's really only been two responses. 1. You loved it and can't wait to see more or 2. You hated it and wish it would die. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground on this on. Check out some of the comments I found on the Gnarcore site.

I'm still waiting on a revised teaser before I post it directly in the furious blog but you can check the rough version out on the Gnarcore site or find it on FB. There's some pretty funny comments there too:

Abyss of the Oracle: F*CK!!! I forgot.... NO REALLY
By: Broderick

I just realized that it is almost my 16th birthday....
sh*t. I'm not doing anything, not having a party or anything. I never expected it to get here quite so fast, really.
It's going to be interesting, being the second oldest in my grade.
Well.... not really, since I don't think anyone really gives a f*ck about my age, they just consider me to be automatically younger than them.
I'm still owed a few presents (kind of conceited sounding - but really I was promised gifts this year), so I'm a little apprehensive that what I get this year might be some piece of crap off the bargain shelf, like what happened on my 7th birthday. That was embarassing. No one wants zebra striped nylons. Apparently there was some horrible mishap and someone thought that nylons meant socks or something, but really, who shops in the girl's section for a boy???!!!

Anyway, if your birthday is also on December 17th or Tevet 10th, or around this time, then MAZEL TOV!!! Have a great day!!!

So pretty much this winter will be amazing.

First off, I am working two jobs. One of which is at Cascade Mountain (instructing). I didn't want to return to Devil's Head this year.

As of two days ago, I am officially going to Colorado over winter break January 7th-January 13th. I cannot wait. The trip ended up being really cheap, because we found a good deal on a plane ticket and my friends live out there and can get us cheap tickets.

Oh man

Well, after being Peyton's coach for many years, he's now on his school team. He went through a two week tryout and made the 7th grade team. I'm pretty happy for him. He has worked hard. I can't wait to just be a "spectator" in the stands, rather than a hollering coach from the bench. I suppose I'll still coach the team, but it will just be the spring league.

And with my shoulder feeling a lot better, it's about time I started playin' again!

Monday, 1st day: we were a little bit worried about how to carry all of our numerous luggages, cause Zermatt is a car free village. We had to leave our car in Täsch and caught a train till our destination. But everything was fine, Zermatt is very well organised and in a short time we reached our apartament, which was really comfortable, big and with wireless!! The sun was shinning, the Matterhorn was splendid, the snow was on the mountain and everything seemd perfect. Yes... it seemd! It seemd untill the evening. We went out in the coolest pub of Zermatt and people in it had nothing to do with snowboard (or freeski). There were just ordinary people and not so young!! We went home really early, thinking about the next day of snowboard!!

Tuesday, 2nd day: the weather was horrible!! From our window we couldn’t see the Matterhorn! The cashier told us not going on the mountain cause the weather was getting worst!! Ok, we stayed at home and in the afternoon we went in the village center, which is absolutely not snwboarders (or freeskiers :P) oriented! There were only really expensive boutiques, souvenir shops and jeweller’s shops and obviuosly many tourists: asiatics, arabics, english, italians, old people and families in general. Where were the young snow-sport people??? Good question!! Then we went again in the pub and finally there were two stylist snowboard guys. A little bit too familiar.... ok, there were two guys from my reagion, two close friends of my ex-boyfriend!! Panic!!! Why are them here?? Why have I never meet them in my reagion, but I meet them here, in this secluded village??? But the most important question was: „my ex-boyfriend is also here??“ I found the answer in the evening. He was there. He was in the pub with my sister’s ex-boyfriend.After a pair of Cuba Libre we sat with them. I drew out all of my likeable. It was funny, until the moment a group of corean guys came at our table. A girl sat next to my ex-boyfriend and he hugged her. Ok... time to go!

Wednesday, 3d day: the weather was not good but we went on the mountain. The Gravity Park was good, maybe rails and boxes were a little bit too difficult for me but not the jumps. The morning was a nice snowboard session. We also met a really handsome guy from Lausanne, a freeskier with two wonderful blue eyes!! Obviously in the afternoon started raining again. In the evening we went out in all the disco just to look for the Freeskier. We didn’t find him anyway!!

Thursday, 4d day: not only rain but also snow in the village. The weather was terrible: the whole Switzerland was invaded from water and Zermatt was not an exception. All the slopes were close. At home there was no electricity so we couldn’t cook and I couldn’t dry my hair... I had spiky hair!! No comment... In the evening we looked again for the Freeskier, but no traces!! We found only our „friends“ from our reagion but without my ex. Where were him? At home? Alone? Or... not alone?? Ok, stop asking to myself: it was no more my cup of tea, right? Well...

Friday, 5th day: the weather was better, but all the slopes were closed again cause they were not shaped!! Another boring day at home and in the village. Moreover, the wireless was broken!! In the evening the discos were full of C.U. (casi umani, don’t know the translation, human case? Well, I mean LOOSERS!!). Yes, Zermatt was full of loosers, they were in every disco, in every pub, they danced, drinked and so on…. Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! And obviously: no Freeskier.....

Saturday, 6th day: finally the sun! The slopes were opened but totally iced! I was really scared that day in the park: I couldn’t take part in the contest. I started thinking that all of these loosers contaminated me… In the evening big party! Yes but… a big party full of loosers does not make a good party! That what happened Saturday evening! We went in every disco but the situation was the same everywhere and... the Freeskier? No idea!!

Sunday, 7th day: the right conclusion of this rotten lucky week? My left thumb broken!!!!!! Obviously on ice! I had to catch 3 skilift and 3 cage to go down from the glacier. It was a torture!!! But... in the last cage I was with the Freeskier, who told me: „I give you my number, so you can call me when you come to Les Diableret and you can stay by me!“ Well... ok... hi hi hi (L)(L). And now?? What have I to do with the number?? :P

Before to reach the train to go to our car we had to wait for the end of a stupid folkloristic parade, where I was also totally wet by a really stupid group disguised as old fire brigade!!! Sometime I really need to kill somebody…

In the evening, in my town, I went to the hospital for my thumb.

From Zermatt with love: a telephon number and a broken thumb!!!

Skateboard News: Battle In Battle Ground
By: Gromfest

This last weekend the Gromfest Crew headed south to a little place called Battle Ground, Washington, home of the Concrete Rodeo Finals (www.concreterodeo.com).

Since April 7th, Jamie Kimball and Konrad Rotermund have been traveling around the country and holding qualifiers, preparing for the Finals that went down August 24th-25th.  Over 100 competitors of all ages showed up for the finals and a 2-day event that put everyone to the test.

Each competitor had 2 runs which not only decided the champions of each age division but also who would be a part of the joust competition.

Gromfest had a tent on site, t-shirts for sale and plenty to talk about.  With over 500 pictures taken and an hour and a half of film, we’ve got plenty to show for our two days.  Make sure to keep checking back for all the media updates.

As the sun began to set and the awards were being....um awarded, Gromfest had to decide who would receive our amazing board or skate wheel trophy.  The board ended up going to Caleb Cole of Enumclaw, Washington who not only took 1st in the 16-17 age bracket but also took the Men’s Jousting competition.  The wheel trophy meanwhile went to 10-year-old Jake Selover from Bend, Oregon.

This was not it however!  Because the talent was so strong, Gromfest couldn’t choose just 2 kids to qualify...oh no, we went much crazier.  By the end of the weekend Gromfest had inducted a total of 13 kids into the Gromfest Finals for next summer.

Concrete Rodeo was a blast and Gromfest would like to thank the entire CR crew for letting us be a part of their amazing event.  We can’t wait for next summer to see where Concrete Rodeo holds their qualifiers and to see how our new Gromfest competitors end up doing at the greatest 18 & under, amateur comp out there...the Great Northwest Gromfest!

If your looking for Mitch Brown your best bet is somewhere on the winners podium. Mitch just finished third behind Finch and Vito at the Burton Australia Open ! Finch was on fire and Vito recovered strongly from a fall in his first run putting Brown to third. That’s the 3rd consecutive podium spot for Mitch and lifted him to a respectable 7th place in the current TTR rankings.
