He's standing there in the hospital room Waiting for her to be born He's terrified of how she will do He's never been a dad before And as she's handed to him He cradles her and holds her tight He kisses her on the cheek And promices her a perfect life He tucks her in for the first time Stays awake all through the night Waiting by her bedside till she starts to cry So he picks her up and sings her a lullaby She's eleven years old just starting fifth grade And he hopes he's been good to his daughter But everyday he is afraid That one day she'll stop calling him father She is still young and dependant on him But she's growing fast And every night he prays That her love for him will last He tucks her in for the last time She wants this to be the last night To old to be fathered to old to cry To old to be sung lullabies She's fifteen now, just entering highschool And she's grown up to be a pretty girl But she won't listen and disobeys rules She's depressed and mad at the world She says she hates everything about him And she runs away Obsessed with looks and always out with friends Falls into every cliche He goes to tuck her in but she's not there And he waits for her all through the night But she never comes home and he starts to cry And hums to himself her old lullaby She only seventeen and already living on her own Moved out of state with her boyfriend She never sees her dad or even calls him on the phone He knew someday that it would end He wishes she would come home And wrap her arms around him To tell him that she's sorry And she'd never leave him again She thirty two and she returns home To see her father again But he is old now still sad and alone And she begs to be forgiven She was lost in life and ran away Cause she didn't know what else to do And she regrets not every saying to him I love you She tucks him in for the first time Kisses him on the forehead goodnight Leans next to his bed and she starts to cry And asks if he remembers lullabies She is forty now, and he is helpless and weak But she stays with him every day He wants yo say he loves her but is to worn to speak So instead he gives her a warm embrace He reached the end of his life But he knows that it will be alright For now he knows he was a good dad And she turned out just fine She tucks him in for the last time He doesn't last through the night And as she says her final goodbye She sings to him her old lullaby
