With our recent trip through the Twilight Zone, a lot of stuff has been lost- pictures, blogs and even friends.  However, one thing that has not gone missing is the burning desire to get back on the hill.  With the season (hopefully) only about two months away, I can more than ever look forward the winter storm advisories, sudden "sick" days from work and weekends of balls out fun.  This year is shaping up to be bigger than anything else with trips to Japan, Colorado, Telus and more.  Can you say best season ever....

OKEMO, VT-- So we're on the lift.  As we disembark, Sara suddenly falls over and her board goes right into my shin.  I keel over in a combination of pain and vexation.  After a minute or two, I recover and realize that her board had torn my pants.  As I examined the tear I thought to myself "what's this red stuff on my fingers?”  Great, her board must have cut me....  I signaled to the crew that I'm heading back to the lodge for a band aid and proceeded to ride down the mountain.  After five minutes of wandering around the lodge, I arrived at the infirmary and politely asked for a band aid.  After a couple of minutes the nurse brought one over.  When I dropped my pants, to both of our surprise, my little cut wasn't a cut at all.  The board had actually carved my leg like a Christmas ham.  They quickly cut me out of my equipment and wrapped the wound to contain the bleeding.  My friends then carted me over to the Hospital were the doctor patched me up in rather quick but very effective fashion.  Now, everyone was concerned about a lot of things-- How bad the injury was. Was there any muscle damage…  Am I going to recover.....? I only had one question for the doc.  Can I get back on the hill say.... tomorrow?  She responded "If you hurry you can squeeze a few runs today."  I have 37 stitches and a prescription for extra strength pain meds.  In spite of being cleared by the doctor, my friends would not let me back on the hill.... and when I couldn't get my boot on it sealed the deal.  My weekend was over....

This has turned out to be a memorable season.  With the city having a record setting snow-less streak and 70 degree weather well into January, many believed that winter had skipped the East Coast this year.  However, the perpetual spring-like weather eventually gave way to an artic cold front unlike anything I can remember in recent years followed by epic amounts of pow.  I may not have had the quantity of days I wanted but the quality was unmatched....

Of President's Day Weekend:  It was the perfect day... times three.

To date I've had 11 days of riding.  Now this falls way short of what I'd had hoped to accomplish this season (I didn't count on such a late start this year).  Still, I think I can make 20.

The breakdown:

Belleayre: 10
Mountain Creek: 1

As of the 27th of January, I've logged seven days of riding thus far this season.  Now, I know for a lot of you mountain men (and women) out there that's nothing.  You could log that in a week.  But for us East Coast riders, it's not too bad-- especially when you consider we've had multiple near 70 degree days in January.  Number seven would prove to be pretty painful though.  I botched the landing off a jump and hit the ground with such force that I cracked the hard pak and left a man-size creator.  Here we are a week later.  My back still hurts and I'm popping Motrin like skittles.  Still, as bad as day seven was for me, day eight was worst for Al.  He somehow managed to almost tear his hamstring on our first run, yesterday.  It's no fun watching your friend get carted off the mountain by ski patrol.  We'll find out on Tuesday if his season over when we get the x-rays....

Wow, what a way to begin the New Year.  Now, everyone here in the North East has been complaining about the detestable conditions we've had to endure for the 2006/07 season.... and rightfully so.  Here we are, January 1st and half the mountains aren't even open.  The few that dare to crank up their lifts struggle to keep a palsy five or six decent runs open.  In the mists on all this chaos and despair, I've found a gem of a day.  It started with heavy down pours, the likes of which would scare your average skier and maybe even a few boarders into hiding under the covers and calling it a day.  However, one dedicated friend (a skier no less) and I soldiered on, making the two and a half hour trek up to Belleayre.  Our determination would not go unrewarded.  Although one would expect the monsoon-like weather would wipe clean any trace of winter, the mountain actually received very little rain fall.  If fact, it had just enough rain to soften the hard pack and frozen granular into the consistency of wet powder.  O happy day.  Every trail was perfect-- holding my edge through every turn as I charge, full blast, down the mountain.... And with a variety of terrain, starting with two Double Diamonds, three Diamonds, six Blues and one Green, we had plenty to play with. Oh and the rain had one other benefit. It kept a lot of people off the mountain so we practically had everything to ourselves…. Although, that could have been the result of the heavy drinking everyone would have done the night before. It is New Years Day after all…
