London – We flew into Heathrow and the plan was to
catch a train to Jamies grandmothers house in Oxford but her house was
flooded. So we got a tube to Camden & met up with Jamies cousin
David who agreed to let us stay for a few days. The first night in
London we met up with some of Jamie’s friends. We didn’t really want
to do any of the touristy stuff in London, but we did go the National
Gallery and Trafalger Sqaure. The exchange rate for pounds to Canadian
dollars was pretty brutal so we didn’t spend much. We caught up with a
friend from school, Nicole who was in Kensington. We walked past Hyde
Park but we didn’t go check out the Princesss Diana memorial, so I
didn’t get the chance to pee in it. If London wasn’t so ridiculously
expensive I would love to live there, going to the pub for a pint is a
great way to spend an evening.
Amsterdam – I
knew this would be the highlight of the trip, I’d heard a lot of
stories about what we should do and where to go in Amsterdam. To be
fair there is a lot of cool stuff to do if sex drugs aren’t your thing
…. we did go visit Anne Franks house, and the Rijksmuseum which has
about 1000 Van Gogh and Rembrandt paintings. But my favorite museum
was the Heineken Experience which lovingly tells the story of Hollands
favorite beer with interactive displays. As you make your way through
the “museum” there are 3 different pubs where you get to sample the
beer.
The nightlife in Amsterdam is amazing, we went to Boom
Chicago which is an improv comedy club. I was surprised how everyone
in Holland spoke English, and the Dutch have no accent. It sounds a
bit American and a bit English, but I would have a hard time spotting a
Dutchman.
I wanted to check out a coffee house in Amsterdam, but I
was not planning on trying any drugs. We went into a coffee house on
the first night & they had a menu of what you could buy – they had
cookies and brownies and doughnuts, and hashie milkshakes. I tried a
brownie, it was supposed to be the equivalent of 2 joints. I think I
was more influenced from the jug of beer we had at boom Chicago. On
our second night in Amsterdam we decided to get a gram of marijuana.
I’m not an expert but it was good stuff. Amsterdam has to be one of
the most interesting places, the people dress like Vogue models. The
red light district was not as sleazy as I expected, it seemed pretty
touristy actually. I was surprised when Jamie suggested we go see a
live sex show, I was happy to try anything & everything we could on
our trip. It was just regular sex, a guy & a girl, 2 lesbians and
then a jungle woman with triple-D boobs having sex with a guy in a
gorilla suit. It was something fun to do as a one-off, but I don’t
think it would be something you would do every week, like instead of
going to the movies you would catch a sex show.
On our last night in
Amsterdam we met up with the rest of our Contiki group. There were 50
people in our group, mostly Australians & New Zealanders and some
South Africans, Canadians, Americans. There were a couple of
Brazilians and Tawainese too, so it was a good mix of people.
Munich
– we were all pretty hung over when we left Amsterdam at 6am to drive
to Munich, Germany. Our tour guide was Rachel, a cool chick from New
Zealand, she basically talked to us like a school teacher & told us
we would have to stay with the group & leave when she told us or
they’d leave without us. We arrived in Munich at about 4PM, just in
time to go see the Glockinspeil. Rachel told us it was the highlight
of Munich … basically it’s a huge cuckoo clock. It went for 10 minutes,
and there were literally 1000s of people watching. When the clock
finally stopped chiming we went for a tour of Munchen. In the middle
of the city is a park where office workers go & sit and eat their
lunch and take their clothes off … it was a nudist park! We went to a
beer hall in Munich for dinner, the very one where Hitler used to go to
give some of his famous speeches. German food is pretty good, the
main course was literally just a pork leg … no vegetables, no side
dish, just meat! I had 2 steins with my dinner so I don’t remember
miuch else happening in Munich, except back at the hotel half the group
went to bed & half the group went to the bar for another drink.
Jamie and I met a local Munchen man who offered to buy us a drink, cos
he enjoyed speaking English and just wanted to talk to us …. ahh ok we
went to bed pretty quickly then. We drove to Switzerland the next
morning, but we did make a stop at the Dacchau concentration camp, they
turned the original buildings into a museum. I have to respect Germany
for not trying to cover up their darkest chapter in history.
Geneva / Lucerne / Zurich
– the trip itinerary was very full, we spent a lot of time each day on
the bus traveling to our next destination. We arrived in Zurich at
lunch time, it’s the one city in Europe that looked exactly how I
expected & was looking forward to explore it. Too bad Rachel gave
us 30 minutes to see the city & have lunch …. just enough time to
grab a McSwiss burger. The Swiss Alps were beautiful and I definitely
want to go back with my snowboard. It was funny seeing the Australians
and South Africans get excited about seeing snow for the first time.
In Lucerne we saw a yodeling demonstration and had a traditional Swiss
dinner. But the highlight of Lucerne was the hotel, which was
basically overtaken by our group. It’s where the group really bonded,
and I leant heaps of new drinking games.
Cannes / Nice / Monaco
– it was a long drive from Lucerne to Cannes, with a short stop in
Zurich. When Rachel gave the group the choice of having a quiet night
at the camping grounds or going to Monaco we unanimously voted for
Monaco. Jamie & I were dressed up to hit the Grand Royale casino
…. I wanted to order a vodka martini, Jamie wanted to bet 10∍ on
black. There was a 20∍ cover charge to enter the Grand Royale, so we
hit the mini-casino next door. Jamie was insistent that he was going
to gamble in Monaco so he put 10∍ in the giant slot machine … and won
950∍! Back in Antibes we got a bottle of vodka to celebrate. The
funniest moment of the trip was in Monaco when Rachel pointed out
Prinicess Stephanie’s palace to us, and Aussie Dave yelled out ‘jeez
its bloody nice hey, I thought my house was nice but this is bloody
beautiful!’. We got to spend the next day in Cannes, you feel like a
schmuck seeing all the sports cars and huge yachts and villas. The
only other interesting thing that happened in Cannes was a guy in our
group nearly got arrested for taking photos of topless women on the
beach. There was a circus with lots of carnival rides next to the
campgrounds where we were staying. After a few beers a bunch of us
went on the giant drop, it wasn’t until we got to the top when Derrick
reminded everyone about the 13 year old girl who lost her feet on the
same ride. But we survived and went back to the huts for more beer and
card games.
Barcelona - Spain was the last
stop on our contiki trip. I’ve always thought that Italy has the
worlds most beautiful women, but Spain is a serious challenger to the
title. The architecture in Spain was amazing. It was the groups last
night & we went to a flamenco demonstration & to a nightclub
which was I was looking forward to doing for the whole trip. I tried
Sangria in Barcelona, which was pretty smooth so I drank more and
more. Maybe it was the alcohol but everybody was pretty emotional
about it being our last night, a bunch of us are planning on reuniting
for another contiki trip next year.
Paris –
Jamie & I flew to Paris the next morning . Air travel in Europe is
realy cheap, our tickets were $30, the same that it costs me to get a
train to Toronto! I’d been to Paris twice before & Jamie had been
a bunch of times before too. We had 3 nights in Paris and Jamiie said
he wanted to blow his 950 winnings from Monaco on a fancy hotel, but we
eventually decided to stay at a hostel. We got a room at the
Woodstock, a pretty famous hotel near the Sacre de Couer. We’d planned
on doing a lot in Paris,, but we were both pretty knackered, so we
ended up going to the Louvre and Les Invalides. We met a Scottish guy
at the Woodstock who spoke fluent French and he & Jamie explored
the Latin Quarter. I thought the Parisiens were pretty rude, but I
would have been disappointed if they weren’t. We got kicked out of out
hotel room at 10:30 (they have a rule you’re not allowed in your room
between 10:30 and 5), and our room got flooded from the sun roof that
was left open. Our last night in Paris was the best night of the
trip, we were planning on a having a few quiet beers at the Woodstock,
but the bar was full of tourists participating in a drinking
Olympics.
my mom had her baby on Friday morning, her name is Sofia
Lani Cardamone. she is doing well, already putting on bit of weight. She was having trouble breathing at first and they had to intubate her. She still has a mask,
but she is breathing on her own. And she is tiny, about the size of a
bottle of coke. She was 2325 grams, she is already gaining a little bit of weight. Seeing Sofia with all the tubes & IVs is one of
the scariest things I've ever seen, my mom thought i was going to faint
(apparently my dad fainted when I was born). Nolan & the twins
haven't seen Sofia yet, you have to be over 16 to be allowed into the
NICU, they might move her into the regular nursery tomorrow.

I was in San Franciso last week with Stacey visiting Dad, cos he was
there for a conference. here are 9 things I noticed about San
Francisco.
- pretty much the first thing we did was the most
touristy thing we could, which was head to Fisherman's Wharf. The best
part about Fisherman's Wharf is all the carnie food they have .. Hot
dogs, chili dogs, popcorn, the works. I had some clam chowder in a
sour dough bread bowl, I don't know what clam chowder is but it was
pretty good. There is a homeless guy called 'bushman' who is kindof a
busker/street performer. He camoflages himself as a bush, and when
people walk past he jumps up & scares them, it was pretty
hilarious. People would pay him $5 to get their photo taken with him.
We got a ferry ride around the bay, the tour guide was telling us there
was a massive earthquake in the 1930s. Afterwards a woman tried to
make breakfast on her broken stove, it caused a massive fire which
eventually burned 70% of all the buildings in San Francisco. It's
known as the Great Bacon & Eggs fire of 1930. Going under the
Golden Gate bridge & looking up was phenomenal. It's massive, and
orange. In comparison I thought Alcatrez looked pretty small, it's
about the same size as our subdivision.
- I had one job
to do in San Francisco - I had to get a bag of sand for my liittle
brother cos hes studying geology. Pretty easy right, it's San
Francisco, I literally thought the hotel would be a 5 minute walk from
the nearest beach. Well apparently there aren't any beaches, theres
one really small beach near Fisherman's Wharf, and another beach on the
west side of the bay. So I never got any sand unfortunately, but to
be honest I wasn't too ecsatic about coming back into Canada with a bag
of sand anyway.
- On Wednesday morning we went for a walk down
Market Street & we saw a genuine anti-war protest rally, with real
hippies and anti-Bush posters. A lady in her 60s gave me a flyer saying
why the troops in Iraq should be brought home. the California police
don't mess around, there were probably 200 protesters, and about 50
policemen, with riot gear & big machine guns. and the police have
those kickass black and white police cars, they look a lot more
intimidating than the Toronto police.
- Afterwards we walked
around Chinatown and Japan Town for a bit, then we got the Bart train
to the Golden Gate bridge, we walked about a third of the way across …
it's too bad you can't walk across one way, and then get a train back.
We got Mexican for dinner, we must have chosen the cheesiest restaurant
possible, there were Mexican guys with somberos playing guantanamera,
but the food was grouse enough.
- we were watching the 10 oclock
news when the newsreader came on and said 'by the way, if you just felt
the ground move, you didn't imagine it, a earthquake measuring 2.4 was
just reported near san some-place.' I never felt it, but it seemed
pretty big, 2.4. Stacey goes 'thats on a scale of 1 to 5 right?', and I
said 'ahh ... yeh it is'.
- I did some shopping, I went to the
big Apple Store to check out the Apple TV, and I got a fancy tie &
shoes for prom from Macys. I also knicked into Borders to get a book
for the flight home, (I got Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut).
When I went to pay for it, it was $15.27, so I gave the guy a $20, 25c,
and 2 pennies. The guy gave me the pennies back and said 'you can have
these, do you have any American pennies' ... I'd given him Canadian
ones. I thought it was a bit cheeky to make a big deal about 2 pennies.
- I
was surprised at how short Californians are, I don't think I saw 5
people over 6 foot, most people were an inch or two taller than me, so
that was pretty sweet.
- The light bulbs in California are
bright!! The bulb in our hotel room was 250W (the light in my bedroom
is only 70W, though there are 3 of them). The lights were so bright,
it felt like the sun was shining.
- here in Canada you can
turn right on a red light (if you stop & give way). I don't think
they have that law in California, cos a few times we were waiting for
cars to turn & they just sat there. and the drivers in California
were WAY polite about giving way to pedestrians. it got to the point
we were waving drivers to go ahead, & they'd just shake their head
& wave for us to go ahead and cross.
So that’s about
it, I definitely want to go back to San Francisco, next time I'd
probably go for a week and try to visit San Jose and Berkley.

I got to see my two favorite Australian bands on
the one bill last night. the Living End were on first, I didn't realize what a
big following they had in Toronto (I kindof assumed 95% of the crowd
were there to see silverchair). This is their 3rd time playing in
Toronto in 12 months. I think these guys must spend 10 months a year
touring, their live perfomance is pretty faithful to how they sound on
their cds. I was glad they played a lot of the songs from their first
CD, I like their newer stuff too but theres something about 'Prisoner
of Society' that reminds me of when I was in grade 4 & pretended
to be an anarchist. i'd forgotten how much i liked 'wake up'. at one
time that was the highest played song on my itunes. they played a
couple of songs I hadn't heard before, I'm not sure if they were new
songs, or covers, but they sounded pretty damn good. but it was their
classics - Who's Gonna Save Us, Second Solution, West End Riot - I
think everytime they started a new song I jumped up & yelled 'f*ck
YEH!'. Hopefully they'll come out with a new cd soon, and they'll be
back in Toronto again in 2007.
during intermission Jamie & I got chatting to two aussie
backpackers. they had been backpackign around Canada & the USA for
the last year & were supposed to go back to Australia last
month, but decided to extend their stay an extra month when they found
out silverchair/the living end were playing. Jamie & I were
telling them about the big day out & the hottest 100, there were a
lot of australians at the kool house (maybe 20%?), I have a knack for
spotting who the Australians are in a crowd. I have to say though
Canadians, and Toronto especially love the chair. I've seen
silverchair four times, in four different countries (Auckland,
Melbourne, Seattle, and now Toronto). considering diorama came out 4
years ago, it is pretty amazing that their T.O. concert sold out in
just a few days. during the show Daniel said they had recorded their new CD in Toronto, how cool is that?
the crowd were chanting 'sil-ver-chair', I think they were expecting
the guys to come out with one of their heavier rock numbers, their
first song was ... without you. eh, wouldn't have been my pick, but
the fans obviously loved diorama. Tune in the Brine, and Luv Your Life
sounded a bit weird to me ... I like those songs, but at a live show I
would have rather seen the chairs heavier songs. in fact most of the
songs were from diorama. Emotion Sickness sounded amazing, my
highlight was Greatest View. There weren't any songs from frog stomp
not suprisingly, but they did play the Door & Freak. Jamie tried
in vain to stop me from singing along to Freak. there were a new few
songs, Straight Lines was easily my favorite, I am definitely looking
forward to the new cd, Young Modern.
they are very different bands but I would have to loved to see the Living End come back on & see the
two bands do a few songs together (imagine silverchair + the living end
covering some ACDC or Midnight Oil?). but thats not how it ended up, Freak was the last song.
well
I got my dose of Aussie rock for now, I know my mates in Brisbane were
spewing when I told them about the show. I hope silverchairs new cd
does well, I don't think diorama did as well as their earlier stuff,
but what bands are still selling CDs these days? one thing going for
silverchair, they don' have any problems selling out shows.

Everytime I clean me room, I make another mess
Everytime I miss the bus, I'm late for a test
Everytime I have a hangover, I have to go to work
Everytime I masturbate dry, it tends to hurt
Everytime I pat a dog, it bites me on the hand
Everytime I talk to aliens, they don’t understand
Everytime I skate, I get another bruise
Everytime I get drunk, I vomit on my shoes
Everytime I freestyle, I just talk sh*t
Everytime I catch the bus, there's no where to sit
Everytime I catch a train, I'm hassled for a ticket
Everytime I bat in cricket, 1st ball takes a wicket
Everytime I give advice, it comes out wrong
Everytime I get raided, my prints are on the bong
Everytime I brush my teeth, I find another cavity
Everytime I try to fly, I discover gravity
Everytime I gamble, I lose all my chips
Everytime I eat "All Bran" I get the sh*ts
But everytime I sh*t, it takes about an hour
And there’s never any paper so I have to have a shower
But everytime I shower the towel is already wet
And it’s not wet with water but wet with common sweat
Everytime I pluck my pubic hairs to make myself attractive
My dick gets sore and I f*ck like a spastic
Everytime I catch a wave, I hit a coral reef
And everytime I order vegetarian, I get beef
Chicken’s not a vegetable, alright?
I was on a bus with Claire on Saturday, & this little Chinese lady sat in front of us. She was having a good old conversation with her self, & she took out this little bottle of rum & took a few swigs. I thought it was pretty funny, but Claire was shaking her head & telling me its not funny, she can be a bit patronising. Then the Chinese lady dropped her bottle of Tide on the floor & it rolled all the way down to the front of the bus. so I picked it up for her. Five minutes later she turns around & says 'were you the boy who picked up my laundry detergent'? I said yhe, she said here & held out her hand, I said no, she said 'yes, here', so I took it. It was $50!! at first Claire said I was an asshole for taking the money, then she said she should get half. i didn't give her any money though, I'm not silly.
this is gonna sound like bull sh*t but anyway - two weeks ago I was at the airport in LA & I saw Steve-O from Sum 41 (I think he's the drummer). As soon as I saw him I thought "weird, that guy looks like Steve-O". then I saw '41' tatooed on his arm. So later on I got on the plane, we we're flying back to Toronto, & theres Steve-O on the same plane, sitting in first class. Thats when I got a bit cheesy - I gave him the thumbs up & said "Steve, nice work". He just grinned & said 'thanks', which was fair enough.
I was at Hockley on friday, & when we got lunch I left all my stuff on the table for a minute to get my poutine, & when I came back my toque was gone! My wallet, watch, phone & Oakleys were intact, but for some reason my toque were just too tempting not to steal. So if you're ever at Hockley, I'd recommend hiding your toque when you go get your poutine.
Fridays = Filet o Fish for McDeal at McDonalds. I love Filet o Fish, and I'm not even a big fish eater. They put the perfect amount of tartae sauce on them, and they've got cheese. Who'd of though, cheese and fish go so well together? I could eat two filet o fish for dinner, I wouldn't even want the fries. Definitely a Sprite goes best with Filet o Fish. You know how they call Quarter Pounders Royale with Cheese in France? I wonder what they call Filet o Fish in France? Maybe they don't they have them, those crazy Frenchies. I'm sure they do. As much as I like Filet o Fish, I could probably only handle eating them once a month. Yhe, you wouldn't want to eat them everyday.
