MGT Snowboard Camp infiltrated Banff's Mt. Norquay this past weekend. With a sold out camp, a perfected terrain park, and a roster of pro coaches including American imports Colleen Quigley and Runway Film’s rail wizard; Desiree Melancon, MGT had an incredible weekend and all the campers went home with perma-smiles and a new bag o tricks. The only winter aspect about the camp was that participants were strapped into snowboards, otherwise everything else had elements of a well stocked summer session; the +10c weather, blue sky, outdoor barbeques, and t-shirt riding. Coaches reported all time progression from their respective groups and with thanks to our sponsors, all the campers went home with some new gear and enough stickers to build a house. The weekend was a complete success Thanks to all the campers who came out and helped MGT once again spread the shred.

Next up is layering the sunscreen in preparation for the inaugural MGT summer camp sessions at High Cascade Snowboard Camp (Mount Hood, OR) and South America Snow Sessions (Bariloche, Argentina).

Girls from near and far showed up to the 2 BUCK CHUCK All Girl Park Clinic and Slopestyle Contest presented by MGT Snowboard Camp, Burton and Grouse Mtn. This is the 5th annual contest series spearheaded by MGT and had 60 female riders pushing their skills over the January 5-6 weekend  in spite of the face wash Mother Nature gave them.

The park clinic portion of the 2 BUCK CHUCK program kicked off on Saturday with pow turns, fierce fog and freezing rain but the Grouse staff were quick to dust off take offs and keep the soft landings for mellow consequences and progression. Campers were sponging every trick in the book from the MGT coaches Leanne Pelosi, Molly Milligan, Robin Van Gyn, Amanda Mourant, and Joanna Majcherkiewicz. The sponging was so good that the MGT coaches were being given a run for their money towards the end of the day. Minus the facial sting from the freezing rain, everyone went  home with new tricks and new stoke for the 2 BUCK CHUCK slopestyle the next day.

Sunday’s slopestyle began with thick North Vancouver  fog and a thick blanket of snow. But even thicker was the unbreakable vibe of the event created  by entourage. Among the swarm were MC’s Damon Pyatt and Dixon from the Boardroom, the crew at Rip.tv and MGT coaches and riders Marie France Roy and Bev Vuilleumier. The competitors that came from everywhere  to get a piece of the MGT pie had a large crowd to watch them get trickatronic. There were cupcakes, Red Bull, bumpin’ tracks, dance parties, and a whole lot of snow. The open jam kicked off with sick tricks like backlips and 180’s on being thrown down right off the bat. 14-year-old Brooke Voight stepped it up with a sick switch front board on the down rail and opened up the tech can of worms.

After a 2 hour jam, the MGT judges went  into the cupcake bunker and made some hard decisions. MGT vet and last years winner, Raewyn Reid of Calgary landed in 3rd place by hammering out some switch-up’s on the flat down,  back 180’s on the down bar. Raekwon, as she’s often referred to, took home $250 and a branded 2 BUCK CHUCK hammer. Not far ahead was Claudia Avon of Quebec in 2nd place who threw down consistently throughout the contest and landed a clean 270 onto the down bar. Claudia won $500, a 2 BUCK CHUCK branded hammer and a spot at the Billabong Flaunt It Slopestyle in Quebec in March. But it was Breanna Stangeland of Calgary/Whistler who stood out with spins on almost every feature, barley’s and 180’s on and off the down bar, and a backlip pretzel out which put Breanna in 1st and also won her best trick! Breanna took home $1150 cash, a giant 2 BUCK CHUCK branded axe and a spot to compete with the crème de la crème of the shred pie at the Burton Abominable Snow Jam in Mt.Hood this summer.

In spite of the weather, the 2 BUCK CHUCK logger jam blasted through and wrapped a 5th solid event that continues to increase female participation in contests and fosters progression. MGT sends out a huge Thank You to all the supporters, coaches, campers, Grouse Mountain terrain park staff and Jeff Silcock, Damon from Coastal Riders, Dixon from Boardroom, Leah from Rip.tv, Birnie at Dragon, crew at Burton, 32, Etnies Girl, K2, Billabong and the Canadian Snowboard Federation.

MGT Crew.

MGT Snowboard Camp Teams Up with Camp of Champions for Summer 2007

By MGT Snowboard Camp

May 13, 2007

Whistler, BC – MGT Snowboard Camp and Camp of Champions have teamed up again to create the MGT Girls Session in Whistler, BC, Canada. The session is hosted by COC on North America’s largest private summer terrain park! Did you miss last summer’s Numa Numa Dance Party on the NOMIS box? Still pickled that you didn’t make the Get a Haircut Get a Real Shred Job after camp activity? Or the Shred Boys of Summer photo auction? MGT will once again return with more good times all hosted on COC’s progressive terrain.

“The terrain we can access through this relationship is ideal; summer weather and as close to winter conditions and features as you can get,” says MGT coach and camp director Leanne Pelosi. “We’re giving out big bags of rad this summer too, that’ll be the biggest draw.” says camp director Joanna Majcherkiewicz. Rounding out the MGT crew this summer will be Jacqui Berg, Alexis Waite, Dominique Vallee, Robin Van Gyn, Amanda Mourant and other ladies with mean handplants and tail blocks.

The Camp of Champions winter quality summer snow park will be even better than ever this summer with the record breaking snowfall that Whistler experienced. Besides the unique terrain on Blackcomb Glacier that the MGT Girls Session at COC offers campers can also get down in the renown Whistler Bike Park, the skateboard park, go rock climbing, shimmy around on three golf courses, chill at one of many warm lakes or take in the Whistler nightlife.

This will be the fourth year that MGT Snowboard Camp offers a summer snowboard program and fifth year offering winter camps. MGT coaches are professional female snowboarders including celebrity guest coaches and up and coming riders. Some of the current strong regional and national level riders have come up through the program and will be up on the glacier this summer to spread the shred too. Some up-and-comers to keep on your shred radar on include Bev Vuillemier and Raewyn Reid.

WHERE WERE YOU? Hope you didn’t miss it; cause the two-day MGT camp at beautiful Lake Louise Mountain Resort was out of control. The camp kicked off day one with nothing but sunshine, a sick park, and soft landings. Campers were throwin’ down some serious grinds and going huge over Lake Louise’s Showtime jump.  Campers were definitely stepping it up and impressing their coaches. With tons of vitamin sunshine stored up campers went home amped for day two.  After a bit of over night snow and some serious shuteye, campers and coaches were up and at em for another day of killing it’ in the freshly groomed Lake Louise park. Even though, the park was hard and unforgiving, the campers were unfazed conquering some of the biggest jibs in the park. After some morning practice we corralled the campers for a late day rider jam. This was definitely a perfect showcase of the future of female snowboarding. Hoodies, hats, and hardware from our sponsors were thrown out for the best tricks. After a few brokeback boardslides, peter pans, and whirlybirds, campers and coaches returned to the Sitzmark for some giveaways from our sponsors Burton, K2 Snowboards, 32Boots, Billabong, Dragon, and Etnies Girl. Staked with tons of goodies, campers bid farewell to coaches and wrapped up another off the hook MGT session at Lake Louise

Don’t get caught with your pants down!……. and be sure you make it out to Camp of Champions MGT Girls Session Camp D happening this July on the Blackcomb glacier.

The all girl Mega Gnarly Tricks park Clinic and Slopestyle Contest, presented by MGT Snowboard Camp, Burton and Grouse took place this past weekend in Vancouver. What began as Mega Gnarly Tricks and a walk in the terrain park ended as Mega Gnarly Tailgate Party and a parking lot session.

Saturday’s Park Clinic began slowly due to Ular’s unexpected icy visit to Grouse the night before. The weather may have temporarily stalled the session but it gave everyone more time to nail their tail blocks, adjust their stances and eat more chocolate.  Once the rope fell, the unfazed campers slayed the Grouse terrain park well into the evening even as the next snowstorm began to build up and hammer down.

The Mega Gnarly Tricks Slopestyle on Sunday was stalled by high winds atop Grouse, but no spirits went broken thanks to some quick thinking, major creativity, and good ol’ fashioned team work that was set in motion to turn the day around. Coaches, campers and Grouse staff quickly hopped to it to build the Mega Gnarly Tailgate Party in the parking lot at the base of Grouse.  Picnic tables, garbage cans, milk crates, and a “backcountry booter” were thrown in the mix to create the stomping ground and within an hour riders were thowin’ down. Trucks were pulled up, beats cranked, Red Bulls guzzled and pizza chomped. After the milk crate ollie contest, the tough decision of who stood out had to be made. Backside 270-ing her way to 1st place was Calgary’s Raewyn Reid. She also won the uber-ollie-the-milk-crates contest by not only clearing the crates but also accessorizing herself with a slice of pizza in her hand. Parking lot jam and pineapple! Raewyn scored the coveted prize of an all expenses paid trip to Montreal to compete in the Billabong All Girl “Flaunt It” Slopestyle AND an invite to the invite-only Burton Abominable Snow Jam Mt.Hood during summer. 2nd place went to Lake Tahoe’s Bev Vuilleumier who took home dollahs and a complete deluxe luggage set from Burton. Bev will be throwing down all over North America this summer so she’ll put that luggage to good use. Whistler’s Sarah Pelletier locked in 3rd place taking home money and a sweet shred stick; the woman’s park friendly Burton Stigma.

So when Mother Nature gives you a snowstorm and a tailgate, you make Mega Gnarly Tailgate party! Special thanks to all our patient campers during this crazy stormy weekend and the Grouse staff for their awesome help.

Watch out for more MGT Events this season including the 2 day camp at Lake Louise on March 31st-April 1st and the Camp of Champions MGT Girls Session (Camp D) this summer on the Blackcomb Glacier in Whistler. For more info check www.mgtsnowboardcamp.com.

WINTER CAMPS WRAP UP
The first MGT camp outside of Canada was held April 8 and 9 at Northstar at Tahoe! We saw huge progression with some of our regular campers doing styley japan grab 540s, switch back 360s and one of them almost landed a 900 off the big jump. The next wave of pro shreds are nipping at our heels!!!
The Lake Louise camp preceded the Northstar event and it was once again a big camp with 39 girls coming from all over Alberta and as far away as Ontario to participate! Here are some highlight photos from the past 2 camps.

MGT's and Burton's MEGA GNARLY TRICKS Terrain Park Clinic and Slopestyle Contest went down this weekend at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver! 41 girls took part in this 2 day event battling a snowstorm and stomachs full of burgers and fries courtesy of Coastal Riders Board Shop in Surrey, BC. This contest is a gateway to the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival so the field broadened and a handful of riders came from as far away as Calgary, Kelowna and even Truckee (northern California).

The terrain park clinic was held on Saturday and gave beginner park riders a proper introduction to the park. The clinic also gave advanced park riders the chance to prepare, with a coach, for the next day's contest. Sunday's event saw girls upping the ante with some cab 270s onto the rails, 3's, 5's and Bev going for her switch back 5. The clinic-contest format has been an effective way to increase female participation in snowboard contests. Girls have commented that being 'walked through' the course with an MGT coach on the day prior was a major confidence booster. Rad.

WINNERS:
1. Bev Vuilleumier (Truckee, California)
2. Janele Pritchard (North Vancouver)
3. Marly Last-Minute-Entry-So-I-Don't-Have-a-Last-Name (Vancouver)

Special thanks to Jeff Silcock and the Grouse Terrain Park crew for putting together an awesome course, Damon and the Coastal Riders Board Shop crew for feeding our bellies, the MGT coaches for judging in a snowstorm, Christine McConnell and Deb Friedman from Burton HQ and Dave Birnie from Timebomb for stopping by and highfiving and all our sponsors for the sweet proddy and cash money.

Our next event is at Lake Louise (April 1-2) and Northstar at Tahoe (April 8 - 9).

Thanks for the support!

Whistler / Blackcomb hosted the second MGT Snowboard Camp of the season on February 4 and 5, 2006. During our 4 years of operation this was the first pow camp. 20cm fell overnight and the girls were immediately sent of cliffs and down pillow lines. This raised the stoke-o-meter and a number of campers felt that this was a breakthrough moment in their snowboarding. The rest of the weekend was spent doing the usual MGT things.... spinning, jibbing, joking around and giving out lots of product.

Thanks to all our sponsors for getting product out to these girls. And a special thanks to our coaches (Spencer, Robin and ..um.. me), coach / operations manager Jody Wright and for the WB staff that helped make this event happen; Rob, Otto, Bea, Ondrea, Tracy and, ofcourse, Terrain Park STU!
