Saturday at ASR I spent most of my time hanging out and watching the ES Game of Skate that was going on. Lets not forget that ASR deals mostly with skate and surf, and the snowboard end of things is almost inexistant. Aside of course from all the movie premiers and parties that are happening.
Speaking of premiers, Sandbox Film's premiered its new movie Flavor Country on Saturday evening. Etnies and Thirty Two were kind enough to host to movie right inside the tradeshow. A couple kegs of beer and a few houndred good people made the premier just perfect. The movie turned out really good, and I highly recomend each and everyone one of you go out and grab a copy.
After the premier, Eddie Lee of Etnies, took some staff and the Sandbox crew out for a crazy italian dinner. Never in my life have I eaten so much. Some peeps went out for beers; I was full and tired and needed a good nights rest.
Sunday was mellow.. slept in til 10 and casually made my way home. I ran into Snowboard Canada's Matt Houghtan while catching the hotel shuttle to the airport. We chatted about life, magazines, and the like.
Four hours later, while cruising on the bus in downtown Vancouver I find Mikee HK driving just in front of us. Naturally I call him, and request he give me a direct ride home to Whistler. He complies, and I jump in the truck in alongside local celebrities Robjn Taylor and Amanda Ames, and Mikee's new puppy.
Now I'm home and things are good... and I won't be drinking any sort of alcohol for quite some time.

Oh ya, and if any of ya'll see Russell Dalby, give him a hug cause his truck just got stolen. *sniff

The finals of the Es Game of Skate took place at the ASR
trade show in San Diego on Saturday, September 9. Thousands of people pack into
the San Diego Convention center to watch the madness. The day started off with
the am contest, where kids from all over the world got to showcase their
talent. I was super impressed with
the consistency of all these guys, and the new innovative tricks they were
pulling out of their asses. In the end it was Alex Mizurov from Germany who
made it to the top.
The pro contest was straight up crazy. The crowd was constantly oh’ing, and ah’ing
and when someone would flawlessly execute a difficult trick they would be
crazy. Chris Cole and Taylor Smith
worked their way through the field, taking out guys left right and center; Cole
taking out PJ Ladd along they way.
But it was the unexpected German from earlier in the day that had worked
his way into the Pro contest that would eventually take the victory. Congratulations
Alex Mizurov.
After
the contest I poked my head into the ASR trade show where the booze had already
started flowing. A couple of beers
later I cruise back across town to find skaters everywhere. It seemed as though every ledge and
curb in sight was being skated.

The ASR trade show is huge. The San Diego Convention Center plays
host to nearly every company that exists within the action sports
industry. Each company rents a booth and showcases their new
product. The retailers then flock into the show to peep the new
product and place their orders for next year.
Of course some companies showrooms are a little more elaborate than
others. DC, ES, Etnies, Volcom and a few others have 1500+ square foot
areas to showcase their product. The booths are big, but they are also
busy, packed with buyers trying to order the best brands into their
shops.
After the show I preceded to cruise downtown. I got my myself some tall
tees from foot locker, and a burrito from baja fresh. When I got back
to the hotel I met up with Nitro pro rider Rube Goldberg, who just
happened to have tickets to a Billibong fashion show.
Never in my life have a seen soo many beautiful women packed into a
club.. maybe because I’d had never been to a real fashion show. The
girls in the show were hot, and so was the new Billibong womens
clothing line. We found Canadians Dez, Risto and Jamieson in the back
drinking vodka sodas, so naturally we joined in. This was fun of
course, until Risto started throughing ice and got himself into a
little wrestling match. For some reason the clubs bouncers didn’t take
lightly to the fight and both involved parties got the boot.
We followed suit soon after, and moved on to an Etnies party just down
the road. The party was packed, and we were lucky we ran into
Etnies Girl team manager Laura Murphy outside. She managed to
squeeze us in back door, and straight up to the VIP. The drinks flowed
for a couple more hours, and things got blurry….
Oh, and by the way, while I was over at the Billibong party I may have missed out on a couple of video premiers. Mack Dawg's Follow Me Around and Standard's Draw The Line played at Spreckles. According to Russell Dalby "Mack Dawg was epic, Standard was boring".. and thats that.

Another sunny day in California made for good surfing, and
hanging on the beach. Option pro
rider and Sandbox founder Kevin Sansalone was kind enough to take me to a break
called Dads, just south of Carlsbad. The waves were mellow and perfect for us
to play around on. We worked up quite an appetite, so naturally we went to In
& Out Burger.
When we arrived back in San Diego we met up with the rest of
the crew that had just flown in.
This included Burton rider Mark Sollors, Option rider Paul Gonzales,
and photographer Russell Dalby. By the time we showered up and had a beer it
was time to head into the Transworld Rider Poll Awards.
The Rider Poll Awards is one hell of a party. Hosted in On
Broadway, the party incorporates 3 different clubs, with different DJ’s in each
area at any given time. At around 9pm, everyone sat down, and watched the best
of the best in snowboarding receive their awards.
Womens rookie of the year, Elena Hight
Mens rookie of the year, Danny Davis
Stand out performance, David Benidect (double cork 1260)
Womens rider of the year, Hannah Beeman
Mens rider of the year, Shaun White
Womens readers poll rider of the year, Leanne Pelosi
Mens readers poll rider of the year, Shaun White
Immediately after the awards, Mack Dawg premiered one of
their new movies People. It was very impressive to say the least. Stand out
parts go to Etienne Gilbert, Shaun Mckay, Nima Jamali and Pat McCarthy. You can
peep the teaser at www.mackdawgproductions.com/2006/people.html
The party went hard all night. And although it’s a bit of a
blur, I think everyone had a crazy good night. A fairly serious dance party
started up in one of the clubs downstairs. I’m pretty sure the whole Burton
girls team was there.. Molly Agurie was just owning the dance floor.
Fun Fun, I’m out,

Although an intimate dinner and drinks with my friends was all that I
wanted for my birthday, waking up at 5:30am the next day wasn’t
ideal. I rolled into gate 86 at YVR around 7am. Turns out I
wasn’t the only one taking an early flight to San Diego; our flight
turns into a reunion for snowboard industry types. On board was
Dice K Maru, Transworld senior photographer, Jamieson, Redbull’s team
and marketing manager, Risto Scott, Billibong team manager, as well as
Teneya Nash and Matt Chamberlain from Nomis. Oh ya, lets not forget the
filmer photographer types that weaseled there way into first class…
Damon Pyett and Sean Hoglin.
California is sunny and warm, who would have expected otherwise. I tag
along with Sean and Damon who’ve rented a car and we head up the coast
towards LA. We poked our heads out the window, scoping surfs
spots along the way, and of course make a pit stop at Wahoo’s for some
fish tacos.
Our destination is Irvine, which just happens to be home to Oakley
headquarters, and the location of Misschief Film’s world premier. Last
night was by far the most elaborate party I have ever experienced.
Oakley was packed, close to 1000 people inside and probably that many
people again outside. Open bar, amazing DJ’s and no shortage of
beautiful women made for an eventful and exciting evening. I vaguely
remember kevin sansalone sneaking beer into the party... which is kind
of interesting considering drinks were free.
When Ro Sham Bo hit the screen everyone went crazy. Fabia Grueebler and
Amber Stackhouse produced an exciting all girls snowboard film.
The soundtrack was amazing, as well at the editing of Per-Hampus. Anne
Flore Marxer and Natasha Zurek had stand out parts, along with new
comers Spencer O'Brien and Marie France Roy. Overall the film was a
huge step in the right direction for womens snowboarding, and I highly
recommend all you ladies picking up a copy when it hits stores in the
next couple of weeks. Check projectmisschief.com to peep the teaser.
Anyways, I need to nurse this hangover, and maybe go ride a few waves, I’ll talk you ya’ll tomorrow.

Do you want to sit around your room all day this summer watching old
snowboarding videos and playing video games claiming your bag of tricks? Or
do you want to rip endless powder, build backcountry booters to
session, receive the 411 on avalanche danger, ride parks and rails,
learn the Spanish language, and gain a new cultural perspective? Chris FS One on a step up we built.Well, if you choose the latter, you have to look into SASS. What is SASS you may ask? Well it stands for South America Snow Sessions,
which is about to kick off its monumental second season in Las Lenas,

Hello friends,
Its been a while, and I felt it was about time to say hi. I've been busy, travelling and stuff.
"A place where the beer flows like wine, and the women flock like the
salmon of capistrami. A place called Aspen!" At least thats where the
Transword Team Challenge went down. I finally got to meet the
rest of my Venue (www.venuesnowboards.com) team mates, and shrap some
shred. We dressed up as mexican wrestlers... I got so acustomed
to wearing my mask I feel naked now shredding without it.
Anyways, we snowboarded a little bit and drank alot, and everyone is
richer from the experience.
I made the treck 2 hours east to summit county, where we have been
riding Copper Mountain. We put together a mixed crew of Sandbox
(www.sandboxland.com) and Mischeif Girls (www.projectmisschief.com/)
including the liks of Dustin Craven, Scott Shaw, Molly Aguiree, Elena
Hight & Jamie Anderson. Cruising laps in the 8 mile long (or
so it seems) terrain park. Aaron Leyland (www.aaronleyland.com)
has been on point filming everyone, so look for footage in the upcoming
movies.
I'm gonna be chillin here for a few more days, and then heading
slightly more east to Keystone for Snowboarder Magazine's SuperPark 10.
Fun Fun... Time to step up and hit some big jumps.
Until next time, keep fit and have fun.

The Showcase Showdown is an annual event put on by whistler backcomb and showcase snowboard shop. Its always been an inovative event and does not stick within the confines of traditional snowboard contests. This year they steped it up to an adapted version of blackcombs night pipe.
I'm sure by now you have heard all about it, and have seen the results, so I won't muck about telling you how well dustin craven, chris wimbles and neil connoly rode. Rather I would like to focus on exciting it was for us spectators drinking beers at the bottom.
On the mic were Spy marketing manager Darryl Trinidad and Ripzone team manager Pete Anderson. Not only did they insult or embarass nearly every competitor, they also managed to question me about my elidgability in front of the few thousand people that lined the pipe. I also heard them mutter a few jokes, "How long was lionel richie on the toiilet?? All night long!" Some obviously we |
