Skateboard News: Wednesday, September 19, 2007
This last weekend the Gromfest Crew headed south to a little place called Battle Ground, Washington, home of the Concrete Rodeo Finals (www.concreterodeo.com).

Since April 7th, Jamie Kimball and Konrad Rotermund have been traveling around the country and holding qualifiers, preparing for the Finals that went down August 24th-25th.  Over 100 competitors of all ages showed up for the finals and a 2-day event that put everyone to the test.

Each competitor had 2 runs which not only decided the champions of each age division but also who would be a part of the joust competition.

Gromfest had a tent on site, t-shirts for sale and plenty to talk about.  With over 500 pictures taken and an hour and a half of film, we’ve got plenty to show for our two days.  Make sure to keep checking back for all the media updates.

As the sun began to set and the awards were being....um awarded, Gromfest had to decide who would receive our amazing board or skate wheel trophy.  The board ended up going to Caleb Cole of Enumclaw, Washington who not only took 1st in the 16-17 age bracket but also took the Men’s Jousting competition.  The wheel trophy meanwhile went to 10-year-old Jake Selover from Bend, Oregon.

This was not it however!  Because the talent was so strong, Gromfest couldn’t choose just 2 kids to qualify...oh no, we went much crazier.  By the end of the weekend Gromfest had inducted a total of 13 kids into the Gromfest Finals for next summer.

Concrete Rodeo was a blast and Gromfest would like to thank the entire CR crew for letting us be a part of their amazing event.  We can’t wait for next summer to see where Concrete Rodeo holds their qualifiers and to see how our new Gromfest competitors end up doing at the greatest 18 & under, amateur comp out there...the Great Northwest Gromfest!

The Woodinville Skate Competition on the 1st of July felt like the official start of summer for Gromfest.  Not only was it a bluebird day but the combination of skating, Jones Soda, Kronik Energy Drink, plenty of past Gromfest qualifiers competing and a slew of new skaters made it perfect.

Gromfest came, Gromfest saw and Gromfest conquered.  Our board and set of wheels were a big hit among the competitors and our t-shirts were even more popular.  We brought a few of the tees you can buy through this website and we had more people asking for a shirt than we had available.

By the end of the day we were sweating and ready to go home, but not before we snagged ourselves three more qualifiers for the '08 finals.

Check out the following and get to it! -

Have you heard of Gromfest?  We’re a grassroots skate and snow competition that takes all of the proceeds from our event and donates them to non-profits that use board sports to benefit kids.  Gromfest happens at Whistler in the summer with the skate competitions happening at Squamish skate park and the snow competitions happening on Camp of Champions terrain up on Blackcomb’s glacier.  This comp is all about the love of the sports…our competitors are there because they love to ride and want to compete against kids from all over North America.

If your tape has a mix of the two, then don’t worry, just upload to whichever one you like. Also include an explanation of why you want to be a part of Gromfest in the comments section of where you uploaded your video, cause dang it we're not only looking for the best riders, but also those who love the sports for all that they are.

         * Videos should be no longer than 5 minutes

Skateboard News: Thursday, May 03, 2007
So for various reasons, Gromfest is shrinking its size and scope for 2007 and just focusing on the competitions themselves.

Part of this is due to the fact that the East Coast had a horrible winter and we couldn't hold any comps there.  Part of this is due to time constraints that plagued us this season.  And part of this is due to the fact that we're a grassroots competition that is run by a small group of volunteers.

Does this mean that the comp is going to kick any less ass?  Of course not.  In fact, this little predicament we ran into this year, only benefits you!

Because we were not able to run all the qualifying comps we wanted to, we want to offer some of the competitor spots to YOU...the snowboard.com members.

If you're interested in competing in Gromfest (whether on the skate or snow side of things), just put together a little video full of footage of you killing it.  Also include an explanation of why you want to be a part of the comp, cause dang it we're not only looking for the best riders, but also those who love the sports for all that they are.

Once that's done, put it in an envelope, slap it in the mail and send it to:

So Gromfest is working with Oakley at Bear Mountain this Saturday for the Oakley Uprising, a jam style event with transitions and artificial features.

This year marks the 2nd Annual Oakley Groms Weekend at Bear...a weekend devoted to the younger shredders that make the sport.

On Saturday, Gromfest will be inducting 2 more youth 18 & under into the qualifiers pool so if you've got talent, put on your sunblock, your sunglasses and your steez and head into the hills for a competition that only Bear and Oakley could put on.

Then, come Sunday, Sports Illustrated For Kids takes over with their Next Snow Search.  Gromfest will still be there but if you want to qualify you've got to come Saturday.

So that's it...come up to Bear either Saturday or Sunday and stop by the Gromfest tent to say hi and grab some stickers.  Also, when you stop by, if you happen to mention that you saw this announcement on Snowboard.com we'll enter you in a drawing to win a pair of Burton gloves.  You gotta be a part of Snowboard.com for that deal however so don't forget to mention it.

See you under the sun and on the slopes!

So if you live in Washington you should have been at Jib This! at the Summit at Snoqualmie and if you weren't there you missed out.

Sure there was fog covering the hill for the whole event...like that's nothing new to Washington riding....but the comp was amazing and Krush and his crew outdid themselves.

For those of you that weren't there, competitors had a choice of 3 features: a van, a hunk of a chairlift pole and a couple Summit bridge boxes.  Pretty cool seeing as how the junkyard park is just getting started (oh yeah, airplane wing still to come).

The competition set a new record this year with around 86 competitors fighting for the prize.  In the end though, two more were inducted into the Gromfest Qualifiers pool.  Who you may ask?  Why the following:

                 * 1st Place Qualifier - Austen Sweetin
                 * Judges Choice Qualifier - Mike Suvereid

Just like the other comps, these boys took home the custom board and boot and since you weren't there to witness and see for yourself you can at least check them and their trophies out below...

Do you have an interest in designing a grassroots competition?

Does the thought of working with various people in the action sports industry make you giddy? (us too)

Are you willing to help run local competitions as well as the finals at Whistler next July?

Are you a snowboarder or skateboarder?

Can you not wait to work hard and not get paid for it?

Gromfest is looking for an intern and if you have an interest in helping design a competition/festival we want you to join us.

Gromfest is a small group of volunteers who are putting time and effort into this giant mess we call a grassroots competition simply because we love the sports.  We're snowboarders and skateboarders to the core and we're looking for an intern who's willing to join the team and get some practical experience working within the action sports industry.

Duties will include prize solicitation, running local competitions, t-shirt and poster design, website updates and of course helping run the finals at Whistler in July 2007.

Qualifications:

  • 18 or older
  • Live in the Seattle Metro Area
  • Be a snowboarder or skateboarder
  • Have an interest in pursuing the action sports industry as a career

If you're interested in more information just hit us up with an e-mail and we'll let you know what the next step is.

The first of the Washington Gromfest qualifiers is going down this weekend at the Summit at Snoqualmie.  If you're around on Saturday, December 30th you should be at Jib This!

Taking place on the upper park at Summit Central, Jib This! will have all kinds of junk yard features for competitors to hit including cars, cans, barriers and of course your standard rails and boxes.

Gromfest will be there with our tent, stickers, Clif Bars and info about other upcoming qualifiers.  Not to mention we'll also have a one-of-a-kind Gromfest board and board to be given to 2 lucky competitors.

If you want to jib the junk and potentially qualify for the finals at Whistler next summer, you better be at the Summit this Saturday.

If you live anywhere in Oregon, you should be at Mt. Bachelor this weekend!

That's right, thanks to the Bachelor crew, Gromfest qualifiers are getting started this December 16th with the Mt. Dew Freestyle Series.

Each day (both Saturday and Sunday), Gromfest will induct another person into the finals at Whistler next summer.

Show up, compete and you just might be the one who gets the one of a kind boot or board trophy as well as the opportunity to compete against some of the best groms from around North America.

If you're 18 or under, be there and keep an eye out for the Gromfest tent as well as stickers and additional information on this grassroots event.

Snowboard news: Monday, October 16, 2006
So I'm going to start off this little announcement by squashing some rumors about Washington State.

1)  It does not always rain here.  Yes, it's raining right now but that's beside the point...we don't get that much precipitation (ooo...big word).

2)  Kurt Cobain is in fact dead.  I know that some of you were holding on to the belief that he's just hiding somewhere and will one day appear again ready to have another Nirvana tour, but that's just not true.

3)  Bill Gates is in fact a robot.  I know a lot of you had some sneaking suspicions and you're right...there's no way one man could create a company like Microsoft.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way let's talk Northwest Gromfest.

Just like in SoCal, let it be known that the Summit at Snoqualmie is the official host mountain for all things Gromfest in Washington State.  The Summit has one of the best parks in Washington with amazing things to come this season thanks for Krush Kulesza and his amazing park staff.

Gromfest and the Summit will be working together on 3 events that will act as qualifiers.  You show up to one of those events and knock the other competitors over into one of those Northwest rain puddles and you just might receive a Gromfest board and the chance to compete in the finals next summer at Whistler.

What events can get you qualified you may ask...well here they are:

WASHINGTON STATE GROMFEST QUALIFIERS

Jib This!
Dec. 30th

Snowrider Superpipe Classic
Feb. 17th

Oakley Big Day Out
Mar. 3rd

Remember to keep an eye to the event schedule on the Gromfest page for all the latest qualifying events!

Snowboard news: Friday, October 13, 2006
So last week the Gromfest crew had a trip to the land of bikinis, movie stars and traffic jams...yes that's right, we went to Los Angeles.

You know there's something about that city (not that I could live there), but it gives off an exciting vibe when it comes to the world of skateboarding and snowboarding.  If you want to work in the industry that's the place to go.  Yes, yes I know you could always go work for Habitat in Ohio or Burton in Vermont or Mervin in Washington or Never Summer in Colorado or...you know what, that's not the point, the point is that the majority of the industry is based in Caliornia.

So for a week the Gromfest crew had meeting after meeting talking with potential sponsors about the big deal next summer.  What also got laid out while we were down there was the schedule for SoCal Snow Qualifiers.

Let it be known that Bear Mountain is the official host mountain for all things Gromfest in SoCal.  Yes, you heard me right, the all-park mountain is now the only place to qualify for Gromfest in Southern California.

Gromfest and Bear will be working together on 3 events that will act as qualifiers.  You show up to one of those events and kick some major keister and you just might receive a Gromfest board and the chance to compete in the finals next summer at Whistler.

What events can get you qualified you may ask...well here they are:

SOCAL GROMFEST QUALIFIERS

Oakley Big Day Out
Jan. 6th

Roxy Snow Classic
Feb. 18th

Bear Night Jam
Feb. 28th

Remember to keep an eye to the event schedule on the Gromfest page for all the latest qualifying events!

Gromfest Partners with Snowboard.com

It's official...as of August, Gromfest has teamed up with Snowboard.com in order to expose even more snowboarders (a.k.a. potential Gromfest qualifiers) to this one-of-a-kind competition.

Keep an eye to the Gromfest page and official Gromfest site for all the updates on where we'll be holding qualifiers, and expect to see snowboard.com banners and prizes at each and every qualifying comp!

Also keep checking back to snowboard.com cause we're concocting (yes, that's right, I used the word concocting) an online competition that only snowboard.com members can be a part of.

In the meantime, check out the page, add Gromfest as a friend and you'll be notified each and every time we add an update.

So start wishing for snow now and we'll see you in Canada!

Snowboard news: Thursday, August 17, 2006
Five weeks of running Gromfest competitions on the best summer terrain North America has ever seen was a blast, but now it's over.  As the summer comes to a close there's only one thought in my head...only 3 months until the snowboard season starts!

While we wait for that though it would be good to recognize those kids and teens that dominated this weekly competition.  They had to have all the skills...rails, jumps, pipes...there was no feature that wouldn't be used.  If you want to ride for a living nowadays you have to be well-rounded and that's exactly what Gromfest tested.

Each of the 1st Place winners and Coaches Choice candidates will automatically get to advance to to the finals next summer at Whistler.  As for those that took 2nd and 3rd?  We hope that they'll consider competing in a Gromfest comp this winter or submitting an audition tape (see www.gromfest.org for more details).

While we wait for the snow to fall however here are the winners of the Great Northwest Gromfest Summer Preliminaries 2006...

Session A
1st Place - Jake Jacobs
2nd Place - Teddy Benson
3rd Place - Brittany Bolen
Coaches Choice - Caden Michnals

Session B
1st Place - Mike Ruddy
2nd Place - Andrew Bullen
3rd Place - Malcolm Cumming
Coaches Choice - David O'Rourke-DiGioia

Session C
1st Place - Pierce Mimura
2nd Place - Steven Dempsey
3rd Place - Jordan Samuel
Coaches Choice - John Paciolla

Session D
1st Place - Graham Bain
2nd Place - Scott McKenzie
3rd Place - Colin Reynolds
Coaches Choice - Scott McKenzie
Additional Coaches Choice - Lauren Shanahan

Session E
1st Place - Dan Stubbs
2nd Place - Nate Belch
3rd Place - Colin Reynolds
