Words: Gerhard Gross Images: David Rouleau

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

Can i get a lens wipe? Filmer Corey G's rig under attack from the elements.

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

beaulieu-wins-1.jpgyes you know its true! gnarcore.com's own Craig Beaulieu took yet another golden tie off of the "you look good" contest people this last saturday at Martock in Halifax. (well actually the tie's white..but you know). Richard Roth was nice enough to send us these epic stills he snapped of Craig on the podium. Thanks Richard! Not only is Craig the poster boy for the You look good contest series but he's won so many of them that when Craig signs up now they just give the guy all their money...it's true! they even empty their pockets and start throwing car keys and watches at the guy. Damn we sure now how to pick 'em.beaulieu-wins.jpgBeaulieu is also leading the "You look good" series contest points right now with a whoping 1000. I don't really know what that means but it sounds really impressive. Perhaps he can trade the points in for dollars and we can all go to Mexico!!!hmmmm?well. thanks craig! now stop kissing that dude and get back home and buy us all beers.

wes_gallery.jpg

Just when you thought Fridays in Whistler couldn't get any cooler. Long time whistler local Jeff Paterson (no, not the photog, a different one) had the smarts to bring in local icon Wes Makepeace to fuel the night at the Fitz pub in the upper village. Wes shows no mercy as he belts and shouts his ever popular whiskey ramblings and horse musical renditions of everything from Warren Zevon to Bob Dylan. If your lucky he'll play the room-filling sing-along "War is hell" which was made popular as the credits track to the mind blowingly insane shred flick POP by Absinthe Film's. Or my favorite "Winter hills of the shred dogs" which also found its way on to a shred sound track as Sean Johnson wisely chose it to end the highly popular trick flick PROMO COPY, damn that one almost wore out my dvd player. As of late Wes has been leaking some gems from his soon to be released album, although don't ask him about it though cause he doesn't know when its coming out either.wes_arm_up.jpgput your hand up if you wanna partyThe Fitz Pub which use to be BBK's is located up by the Chateau whistler so there' always a bunch of uptight tourists to piss off as you stumble out of the tiny pub for a smoke and a joke. The night has become so popular that it almost imploded on it self two weeks ago when the room got so packed you couldn't even move. The next thing you know you'd been pushed around so much that you were standing next to Wes bumping his whiskey and kicking the cardboard box that his percussionist Mark Bannock uses as a make shift base drum. I'm serious, the box gets duct taped to the floor and fixed with a kick pedal. The only problem with the box is... well, its a cardboard box and i'll be interested to see how long it lasts as it serves as a drip catcher for the barrage of drinks that gets relayed between the two as they put the all-you-can-drink-for-the-band rule to the test.bannock-copy.jpgWhy are drummers always so agro? "The box" and the angriest photo you'll ever see of Mark bannock Wes Makepeace and Mark Bannock play every Friday night at the Fitz Pub in Whitsler at around 9 or 10pm. See you there...if you can get in.

kazu and beards Kazu or Zizo, Beardmore and filmer Pat Henery, just generally looking hard If your familiar with famed japanese photographer Kazu then you know how much of an enigma the guy is. His very existence is a mystical feat of nature. Kazu is now staff for Atomic Snowboards so he's been shooting with MATT BEARDMORE a ton as well as Gerg Maxwell who's in town filming for the new Alterna Film. Both Greg and Kazu have been bunking out in the famed Artbarn which has turned into an international hostel these days. The Beards has become some what of a father figure to Kazu (who i'm sure in reality is actually older then mat) and has many a fantastic stories of the little guy that range from a rare bum disease to and rolling deep into Revy's Back-country with only a single frayed snowmobile belt. Rumor has it he even got out shooting with Atomic hopeful and teen heart throb BARRY HARTMAN but the report is still out on that one. When it all comes down to it Kazu is a righteous lens man with a sweet english-canadian vocabulary and just a real treat to be around. Kazu has had multiple international snowboard magazine covers, been a model for AIR blaster, has his own T-shirt designed after him and just generally wows everyone he collides with. In a random move of role reversals i shot this sick sequence of Kazu going from photographer-dude to dude-in-a-pink-shirt-with-his-own-image-on-it, breath taking i know....and your welcome.in-truck.jpg kazu-pants.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgPiece!

obama.jpg gnarcore.com is not or does not claim to be highly political in any way. Although it may be an underlying interest in many of our lives, lets face it we either just don't care or plain don't have the want to find the time. That being said we wouldn'd be human if we didn't notice how much of a mess the Bush's have made of the world. I've been hearing a lot lately about democratic Senator Barack Obama and the kind of change he plans on instilling in America. It sounds good. That and it'd be cool to see a black guy running that country. i mean why not right?...what a kick in the pants to all those rich southern white guys who've been running the show for years. Well that and you know, the promise of hope for a dwindling nation.

vote.jpg

Graphic artist/designer and street art icon Shepard Fairey was once like all of us, soley interested in getting his kicks on a hand rail or launch ramp or running around with his friends f*cking shi*t up. Some where along the lines you can't help but notice what is happening in your own country and feel the need to effect change in your own way. Shepard's is a fan of aesthetics, he enjoys the quality and look of a poster above all but as he was quoted as saying here he's big fan of when a piece can send a message as well as being visually stimulating "I don't think the artist has a job to comment on politics but my favorite art has something provocative about it and communication that has a point of view." I couldn't agree more.

shepobamasign2.jpg

Shepard signing prints "I believe with great conviction that Barack Obama should be the next President. I have been paying close attention to him since the Democratic convention in 2004. I feel that he is more a statesman than a politician. He was against the war when it was an unpopular position (and Hillary was for the war at that time), Obama is for energy and environmental conservation. He is for healthcare reform. Check him out for yourself www.barackobama.com. Proceeds from this print go to produce prints for a large statewide poster campaign. Thanks".-Shepard
