I've been back in Alaska for a while now. Not permanently, mind you, but mostly. In and out. I spent 3 weeks in the Tahoe area.. that was fun. Been back and forward between here and San Francisco for most of the year.
Moving there in January.
Alyeska already has 300+" through November. Let's hope for another amazing December, especially now that they semester is up.
Being in San Francisco is going to be nice. Only live about a 20 minute walk from the beach, like a 5 or 6 minute bus ride.
Yup.
Live is good. Life is good.

Summer.
Mixed blessings, y'know?
On one hand, the snow is basically gone. Yeah, we can hike it out still and hit a few isolated spots here and there, and riding in shorts and t-shirts is legitimately pretty great. But, at the same time.. it's not real riding. It's short chutes that the snow hasn't melted in, and the rocks and just chilling below the surface waiting to eat you.
Not to mention that I haven't been in Alaska all that much. San Francisco, North Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, Colorado, etc, my life is perpetually mobile and taking me to and from the snow. On the plus side.. surfing and beaches. On the negative side.. summer and no snow.
Oh well.
Life is good. When the worst thing that you are complaining about is having to hike to a chute.. life is good :)

So it's mid-April and the season is rapidly coming to a close. A couple more weeks of spring riding at home, maybe a trip down to Whistler in May for the end of the season there, and then it's another summer of camping, hiking, and healing for next season. I ended up only getting around 50 days on the snow this year, too much time spent out of state for various reasons. Met a lot of new people, pushed myself a lot further than I thought I'd go on the board, and in general just had a great damn time out there. The sad part is, however, that I'm writing this from Quantico, Virginia where they've sent me for a week of training.. so not only is the season dying it's slow.. sad death.. but I have to miss a week of this last hurrah. Spring riding is the time when the people who love the sport.. for the love.. get out there. The time when everyone you meet on the slope is as stoked as you are to just be out there. Stoke man, it's all about the stoke. So here's looking forward to next season, hoping that it ends as good as this year started, that we get the 1200" we should have got this season and that I can have as much fun with my friends, old and new, as I did this season. Next year will be my last in AK, then I'll be in a city in California... 4 hours from the nearest slope, likely without a vehicle to take me there. Will surfing suffice? Time will tell.

So it was opening day back home over this last weekend. I celebrated by ordering myself and my brother new boards. We got the Never Summer Revolver(for me) and the Never Summer Legacy (for him). I get home in 3 weeks and you better believe I have never been more excited to get back to Alaska.
The taste of just the smallest freedoms is so amazing to someone who has lost all freedom, in boot camp, etc. I'd imagine that criminals go through the same thing when they get out, but without the bittersweet knowledge that they defend that freedom with their life.
Oh well.
Think snow!

This is my first ever post in this blog.. just finished setting up my profile even though I've been a member here for over a year.
Ha.
I'm stuck on a Marine Corps base in the middle of the desert though, hundreds of miles from any snow, probably thousands of miles from any rideable snow, so this place is keeping me going. We just spent 4 hours cleaning our barracks. Glamorous military, no?
Anyway, this is my blog and if you have questions or swing by my profile, toss me a message or comment and say what's up. I'll post more as the season kicks into gear and I get home to Alaska.
